The first three acts were performed at the Court

1664:

the conjoined action of all religious fac

tions-from Jesuits to lansenists-suppressed it.

suppressed after a single night. Finally,

it

regained the

stage in 1669, and held it. Moliere could not have writ

ten this t:omedy, karl not Pascal some time before written

his Lettres Provinciales, from whtch indeed the Jesuits

·have ttever wholly recovered in the esteem

of

the world.

The movement, upon Moliere's death, to deny him Chris

tian burial is a good· index to the immense bitterness

which this quiet play induced. As one Vicar wrote to the

King: Moliere is a demon incarnate and dressed like a

man, the f{reatest unbeliever and heretic that ever existed,
