A few days later at home Teuila and Kionasina are discussing the deteriorating health of Sina. They notice that Tasi is also not doing well—she has gained weight, eats poorly and smokes heavily. They are worried about their mothers’ health because the Sina had similar symptoms that when unchecked and is now dying in the hospital. Teuila decides to confront their mother. Teuila is called into the kitchen to help Tasi prepare dinner. Kionasina goes home. Teuila notices Tasi does not look well and she encourages her to sit down. Tasi lights a cigarette and complains about not feeling well. They discuss the Sina’ situation—she will die soon and leave Kionasina and Ionae. They encourage Tasi to stop smoking. They suggest they cook a nutritious meal that night and then go out for a walk together. Tasi says she is too tired and acts annoyed with her daughter’s suggestions. She expresses her fears about finding out she is sick because there is nothing that can be done. If she dies, she dies. She reminds Tasi about the cancer education event happening at the church later that day. The mother had previously said she would attend this event with the daughter but now she has many excuses: no one will be there to watch the children, she has to cook dinner, she is too tired. Teuila says Pua will do the cooking and watch the kids and Tasi can take a nap before the event. Frustrated Tasi says there is no use in learning about cancer because it is a (E) curse—it runs in the family and it is God’s will. She had an auntie and her mother died of cancer so there is nothing that can be done about it except pray you never get that sickness. She says she is (C) afraid to learn she might have cancer too because there is no cure, so it is best not to know. Just when Teuila is ready to give up Kionasina knocks on the door. She greets everyone and says the Faifeau’s wife instructed her to gather all the village women for cancer education event at the church. Kionasina says her auntie in Seattle thinks Sina has cancer. Kionasina does not know anything about cancer but she is eager to find out more. If her mother has cancer maybe there is still something that can be done to treat her. At the church Fia the health outreach worker provides basic information about breast cancer. During the question and answer part a village woman named Imeleta says that cancer is a curse (E) and there is no cure so why should they screen? Aolele, a cancer survivor, addresses this question explaining that women can know their bodies and understand changes. When they find changes they cannot be afraid to go to the hospital. Women have choices and if they decide to screen for cancer early it can e treated and not a curse. A Second Village Woman, Moana, says she does not trust the hospital, she only trusts in praying to God to keep her healthy. Aolele tells her “prayer without works is dead” and the Lord helps those who help themselves. Aolele encourages the woman to (A) make their healthy a priority because (title) they only have one life. Fia and Aolele encourage the woman to get screened for cancer. Cliff‐hanger‐ Will Tasi get screened? Fia tells the women the times and places for the after‐hours breast cancer screening clinics. Imeleta asks what happens for screening. Fia explains clinical breast exams, self breast exams and mammograms. Fia says she can perform the Clinical Breast Exam in a small room after the meeting and she encourages women to stay. Moana asks Tasi if she will stay to be screened. Tasi says no. She needs to get home to prepare for a falavelave. A couple of days later Tasi receives a phone call from Kionasina saying her mother Sina wonders why her good friend Tasi has not visited her in the hospital. Tasi decides to visit Sina. The next day at the hospital Sina tells Tasi she knows she has cancer. She describes her experience. Five years earlier she attended a cancer awareness talk at the church where she learned how to do a self breast exam. She did self exams every month as she was taught and one day she found a lump. Her husband, Ionane, told her to go to the hospital but she was afraid and she did not have time to see the doctor. Her relatives took her to a Fofo for massage but this did not work and the lump got bigger. All she could do was pray. After 3 years the lump became painful and her husband finally convinced her to go to the hospital because she could no longer sleep through the night. She had a mammogram and then she was referred to the Surgical Ward for a biopsy. Sina explains the biopsy procedure. She does not know why she was so afraid of a biopsy all those years. Now the doctors say she has waited too long because the cancer has spread to other parts of her body. All those years she did not want to believe she was sick and she did not want to burden her family. Sina tells Tasi if she could do it again she would have been brave and screened for cancer early. She tells it is best to know and she should be screened because she knows cancer is in Tasi’s family. Tasi decides she will be screened. The episode ends at the Clinic with the nurse telling Tasi to come back in 2 weeks for the results of her mammogram. Cliffhanger‐ Will Sina live? Will Tasi come back for her results? At school that day Teuila and Kioansina are talking. Kionasina says how much the family misses Sina. She remembers her mother slowly becoming sick over the years but she never complained. But they knew she was sick and wanted to help her. Once Sina went to see a Fofo in Upolo who she had heard had medicine for her sickness. When Sina returned from Apia she was in pain and needed finally agreed to go to the hospital. Kionasina wishes she would have known her mother had cancer because they have family members in Hawaii and Seattle who could have helped her get treatment off‐island. But Sina kept her illness a secret form the family. At home later that night Ete tells Tasi she needs to take care of her health and take advantage of the doctor’s knowledge at the hospital. He jokes that if she dies he’ll have to marry someone else—maybe her sister will be available? Ete says he received a call that day that Tasi’s cancer screening results are available. He offers to drive her to the hospital the next morning and then they’ll go out for breakfast. Tasi agrees. Cliffhanger‐ What will Tasi’s results be? She sings along with the “One Life” theme song. Ete comments that she seems to be in good spirits lately. Teuila notices she is not smoking and has been walking with the village women to church instead of riding. Tasi says she realizes she only has one body and one life and if she does not take care of it no one else will. She admits she is still a little afraid of receiving her cancer screening results but that fear cannot stop her. Ete reminds Tasi that God is there for them in these times of uncertainty. 1. Narrator
It’s a quiet afternoon in Leone village. Tasi, a married mother of 5 children, is busy finishing sewing an order. Her two daughters, Teuila and Pua, have just come home from youth choir practice.
2. Teuila
You know Mom, I haven’t seen my friend Kiona at school lately. She’s been really busy taking care of her mom at the hospital.
3. Tasi No wonder (why) she hasn’t come around lately to talk and help me sew, but I really could use her now because of all the orders that I have.
4. Teuila Why don’t we go visit them? I’m sure they’ll be happy to see us, mom! And I’ll get to talk to my friend‐Kiona, again!
5. Tasi I wish we could go, but there’s too much stuff that I need to do around the house. (Mom gives order to Pua) Pua, when your done with your homework, pick up the trash outside.
6. Teuila Please, mom! Just today….please?
FX Phone rings Pick up phone
7. Tasi
I’ll get it. Hello!
8. Kiona (sadly) Hello. Is Teuila there please? 9. Tasi
Yes, just a moment. (Calling) Teuila . (Pause) Teuila! Kiona is on the phone for you.
10. Teuila Hello?
11. Pua Teuila, It’s me‐ Kiona.
12. Teuila Hey, Kiona! How have you been? I miss talking to you at school! I just talked to my mom about you—that you haven’t showed up at school lately. Is everything okay? How’s your mother?
13. Kiona (almost crying) um…I don’t know
14. Teuila Kiona, are you okay? You sound upset. Is everything okay with your mother?
15. Kiona I… I overheard the doctor tell my dad this morning that she’s not getting better. ..that she won’t be coming home.
16. Teuila What…oh no! What do you mean?

Pua that was Kiona. Her mother is very ill and she sounds, really upset. (concerned) You know, I’m getting worried that something might happen to mom.
19. Pua
Like what? What do you mean?
20. Teuila Can’t you see, mom smokes too much, all she eats greasy foods, she’s gaining weight, she used to walk all the time but now all she does is stay inside. She doesn’t look well at all, can’t you tell?
21. Pua
Stop it! Stop it, okay! Don’t say that.
22. Teuila But it’s the truth, Pua! I’m worried that she might end up…like Kiona’s mom. We have to do something.
23. Pua What are we going to do?
24. Tasi (calling from distance) Pua & Teuila, I need you both to help me prepare dinner. (couging). I don’t feel so good (cough). Grab me a chair and get me some ice water. (Gasp for air).
25.Teuila (Concerned) Mom, are you OK?
26.Tasi I’m fine, okay. I’m fine, I’m fine.
27. Teuila Look mom, I just got off of the phone with Kiona, and she’s really worried about Aunty Sina. Aunty used to say she was okay too and not to worry and now she is in the hospital. And I know that we don’t talk about things like this, but I can’t imagine you not around, which is what is probably going to happen to Kiona. Mom, we only have one life…
28. Tasi (interrupts Teuila) Don’t worry. Aunty Sina is going to fine.
29. Teuila (frustrated) Pua, do you remember when we all took the Lady Naomi to Apia for the Teuila Festival last year?
30.Pua Yeah! That’s when Kiona forgot Aunty Sina’s puletasi and Aunty almost threw her overboard half way over there.
31. Teuila (sighs) Yes, but don’t you remember how Aunty looked? She said that she felt fine, but she couldn’t sleep at night and then they had to go and find her a fofo. And even after we came back home, Aunty still wasn’t feeling good, and she still wouldn’t see the doctor even after Uncle Ioane told her to. And now she’s in the hospital.
32. Pua Mom, maybe you should go see a doctor and not wait like Aunty Sina …

33. Tasi A doctor? When do you think that I have time to go see the doctor? In the mornings I make sure that you kids and your dad have breakfast. Then during the day, I’m in the sewing shop downstairs, and when I get home I have to make dinner for everyone. (annoyed) So you tell ME, when do I have time to see the doctor. (coughs) Plus I can handle myself, okay! I’ve handled you two and your 3 brothers, so don’t tell me what I should do! Like I said, Aunty is going to be fine, I’m going to be fine. So stop worrying.
34. Teuila That’s what we are trying to say to you. We only have one life mom, and we want you to be around a long time so we can take care of you too. How do you think we can do that if you keep smoking, you don’t exercise, and we keep on eating all of that povi masima and stuff like that.
35.Pua Mom, Teuila’s right. We all care about you and we want you to be here with us for a long time. So please don’t be afraid to see the doctor, like Aunty Sina was (pause). (Upbeat) How about we eat something different for dinner like a salad and then maybe this week we can walk to bingo, instead of the car? (Pause) You know that we will be here to help you.
36. Tasi You know how you can help me now? Go set the table.

Previously on “Tasi le Ola,” Tasi learned that her old friend, Sinalei, is critically ill and in the hospital. Tasi’s daughters Teuila and Pua, become concerned about their own mother’s health. They tried to encourage her to make her health her priority by quitting smoking, eating better, and exercising more. But Tasi, like her friend Sina, is still reluctant to seek the advice of a doctor.

5. Teuila We’re coming home after volleyball so we can watch the boys and make dinner so you can go to that health meeting tonight at church.
6. Tasi What did I tell you the other day? I don’t have time. I still have that sewing order to complete and then make dinner for all of you. I’m going to be too tired to go to that meeting. And I keep telling you that I’m fine! So stop your mouth! You’re starting to give me a headache in my stomach. Go and catch the bus, before you’re late to school and I make you pull weeds all day.

(pause) But what if I go, and then I find out that there wasn’t anything there for me. I just wasted all of that time. (pause) But why am I coughing so much lately? I get tired a lot faster now. But what if I do go, and I find out that I am sick, what choice do I have then? (pause) Both mom and aunty did not live much longer than me. They felt that they were cursed. 15. Fia
Now that we know that cancer is the second leading cause of death in American Samoa, and breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths for American Samoan women, remember that most breast cancers can be prevented by doing a few things like eating a proper diet, not smoking, being active, and understanding your body changes that maybe symptoms. Now does anyone have any questions? Yes, Imeleta?
16. Imeleta What is this cancer?
17. Fia Our bodies are made up of tiny cells that are too small to see. Sometimes these cells grow in strange ways and cause tumors or growths. Cancer starts when some cells grow out of control and take over parts of the body.
18. Moana Are all growths cancer?
19. Fia No, Moana, most growths are not cancer and may go away, but some growths get larger and spread. Once cancer spreads it is more difficult to cure. But if cancer is detected early, it can be removed by surgery or treated in other ways.
20. Imeleta How do you know if you have breast cancer though?
Tasi le Ola ‐ Episode 2
21. Fia Breast cancer usually has warning signs like breast lumps. But, breast lumps are very common. Only some breast lumps are cancer. But since breast cancer is always a possibility a woman should examine her breasts for lumps once a month. Later this evening we will teach you how to look for breast lumps. If you find a lump you should go to the hospital for an x‐ray called a mammogram. A mammogram can find a lump when it is less dangerous.
22. Tasi But isn’t cancer a curse and there is no cure? So why should we try to find out if we even have it?
23. Fia Maybe Aolele can help us answer that question. Aolele?
24. Aolele Hi everyone, and thank you for having me. I know that cancer is not curse because I’m a breast cancer survivor. People call cancer a curse when they don’t do anything about it. Woman over 50 years old are more at risk for breast cancer. If you’re mother or sister has had cancer, you’re more at risk. There are some things that we cannot choose like our age and our family, but you can learn to look for and understand your body changes. And if you find changes, do not be afraid to go to the hospital. We women can decide to look for cancer early when it can be treated, and then it will not be a curse, because you only have one life.
25. Moana You say to go to the hospital, but I don’t trust the hospital. I only trust the Lord. Only He will keep me healthy.
26. Aolele The Apostle Paul in the Bible says “Faith without works is dead.” When you ask for blessings, you have to do something about it. It’s a two way street. You don’t say “bless me and make me well” and then go smoke cigarettes. That’s not how it works. You have your prayer and you have your faith but you must work to fulfill those prayers.
27. Fia Aolele is right. You have the choice. You have the ability to make your health your priority. And to help you out, we’ll now teach you how to correctly do a self breast exam.
28. Moana (Whispering to Imeleta) Hey Ime, are you staying for this? (pause) Hey, and where’s Tasi?

Listen next time to learn if Tasi will take Aolele and Fia’s advice? Or does she still think that cancer is a curse that she has no power over. And what of Sina?

Tasi le Ola ‐ Episode 3
FX Theme song opening 1. Narrator
Last time on “Tasi le Ola”, Tasi reluctantly attended the women’s health meeting at her church after Mine, the Pastor’s wife, called. While there, Fia, a nurse and health educator, and Aolele, a breast cancer survivor, explained the risks, symptoms, and some of the myths of breast cancer. We rejoin them at the meeting….
FX Background sound (crowd noises) fade under 2. Fia
(talking to the microphone giving directions) Now that we shown you how to do a self breast exam, for those of you who would like, I will be providing clinical breast exams in the room to my right until 7:00pm.
3. Imeleta What do you mean by a “clinical” breast exam?
4. Fia Remember, a self breast exam is done by you, but a clinical breast exam is done by either a trained nurse or doctor who specializes in looking for breast lumps.
5. Moana (agitated) How long does it normally take?
6. Fia Normally it takes about 15 minutes. But if you’re not able to stay, you can go to our after‐hour clinics Mondays and Wednesdays 4:00 – 7:00pm at the Tafuna Family Health Center. Tuesdays and Thursdays 4:00 – 7:00pm at the LBJ OB/GYN clinic. Or, at the Amouli dispensary on Tuesdays 9:00am – 2:00pm. But remember what Aolele mentioned before, “Faith without works is dead.” To my understanding, she meant, action speaks louder than words.
7. Moana (to Imeleta) I thought I heard my pastor’s wife…(laughter)
8. Fia Okay, before we break out for the food, I’m going to ask Mine to please bless the food and our gathering. Mine?
9. Mine Thank you very much for coming to our church this evening and helping us out but let us pray. Almighty God, as we end our fellowship this evening we feel comfort and great courage at this time. We thank you for the nurses, doctors and all those you have chosen to work through to provide us with healing. May we remember that you made us in our image Lord and help us to take care of your temple, our bodies. Forgive us for not taking care of our bodies, our health and ourselves. May we understand and know that faith without works is dead and Lord, help us to make our health a priority as one thing is certain, we have but ‘One Life’. For the food we are about to receive, may we be truly grateful, in Jesus Name…Amen.
10. Moana (whispering to Tasi) Hey, where did you go?

12. Moana I don’t know. I really need to go. It’s king of embarrassing to do this (mockingly) “clinical breast exam” right now.

15. Tasi No it wasn’t too bad. Aolele was brave to tell her story, and look, she survived her breast cancer. She looks well, and she’s really active for everything she went through. Plus it was a good thing to see all of the village women come together.
16. Moana All of the women? Where was Sina?
17. Tasi She’s been in the hospital for a couple of weeks now.
18. Moana Didn’t that Samoan healer in Apia cure her mumu?
19. Tasi Mumu? What type of mumu?
20. Moana I don’t know, but it can’t be serious.
21. Tasi But she’s been in the hospital for two weeks! It can’t be an in‐grown toe nail! I’m going to go and visit her tomorrow!

24. Sina Ah, other than the pain, I’m okay. So, Kiona told me that she visited the girls the other night. How are they?
25. Tasi They are good. Still driving me crazy.
26. Sina: Are you still busy with your sewing?
27. Tasi Well, yes. But I’ve been getting tired lately, but I’m still getting the work done.
28. Sina I’m sorry that I haven’t been there to help you lately. I miss our time together. How’s everything in the village?

Tasi le Ola ‐ Episode 3
29. Tasi Well, last night I got a call from Mine to attend a women’s health meeting at the church.
So I went and met up with Moana and Imeleta.
30. Sina Oh, I’m so glad that you went to that. Was it Fia? I hope that you listened to what she said. I wish that I had.
31. Tasi What do you mean?
32. Sina Tasi, I never told you this. And I don’t want to burden you now, but I feel I have to tell you. 3 years ago, Mine called me to attend one of those meetings and Fia was there with another lady, I believe named Aolele. They talked about breast cancer, and changes in your body, how to check for breast lumps, what to do when we find one. Afterwards, I did those self exams every month just as I was taught, but one day I felt a lump. And I was afraid.
33. Tasi Did you go to the hospital?
34. Sina (sighs) I told my husband, and Ioane wanted me to go to the hospital. But I told him that I was too busy, with sewing and cooking, but I really think that I was just afraid.
35. Tasi What were you afraid of?
36. Sina There were so many things. Because I heard that at the hospital they use needles, also that they may cut into me, and what would happen if they found something? I might lose my breast. I just didn’t want to know. My children are still young and I didn’t want to hear that my days may be numbered.
37. Tasi Is this why you went to see the Fof in Apia last year when we went with the girls?
38. Sina Yes. My relatives took me to the fofo for a massage because I was in pain. But there was no change and the lump got bigger. I felt that all that I could do was pray.
39. Tasi So what happened after that?
40. Sina Eventually the pain got so bad that I couldn’t rest at night. So Ioane took me to the hospital. From there I saw a doctor who gave me a clinical breast exam and told me that I had a large breast lump and I needed to get a mammogram. After they got the results from the mammogram, they told me that I needed to go to the surgical ward where they took me to the operating room. Then the doctor came in and he gave me a shot so I couldn’t feel anything, and so they did this surgery to remove a part of the lump to see if I had breast cancer. They called this a biopsy.
41. Tasi So, what did they tell you?
42. Sina (sobbing) the doctors told me that I waited too long. Now the cancer has spread throughout my body. All those years I did not want to believe I was sick and I didn’t want to burden my family. If I could do it again, I would have been brave and screened for

cancer early. I don’t know why I was so afraid of the biopsy. Tasi, it is best to know. You’re just like me. We both have daughters the same age, and now I won’t see Kiona grow up, get married, see my grandkids. And cancer is even in your family with your mom and aunty, that makes you more at risk to have it also or your girls. Please, don’t wait like me. (weaker)Don’t be afraid. (weaker) You only have one life…

Two weeks have passed since last time on “Tasi le Ola”, when Tasi attended a women’s health meeting at the church, however she left early with her friend Moana, instead of staying to be screened for breast cancer. Then Tasi decided to visit her friend Sina in the hospital. There, Tasi finally found out Sina’s illness; she’s battling breast cancer.

3. Tasi When I think of the pain that Sina went through, no, it wasn’t. But when will I get the results?
4. Fia Come back in a month from today and we should have the results from the mammogram and we’ll go over them then.
5. Tasi (concerned) Well, what could happen?
6. Fia If it looks suspicious, we’ll have to do a biopsy and discuss your results then. But remember, because you’ve come in early to screen for cancer you have more choices and you’re taking control of your health and getting over your fears.

11. Kiona You don’t know how deep and bitter the pain is that I feel. I don’t even know how I feel most of the time except when I cry and I long to be able to see her once more.
12. Teuila Oh, I’m so sorry Kiona. Is there anything that I can do?
13. Kiona (sighs) Can you sit with me for a little bit? 14. Teuila
Sure
15. Kiona You know what I remember most? Is that as she got worse and looking really ill, she never once complained to me. She didn’t want me to see how sick she really was and

still she wanted to make sure that I was okay. I should have known when she went to see the fofo and that taulasea in Apia that she was looking for something to ease her pain.
16. Teuila Kiona, you shouldn’t blame yourself.
17. Kiona I just feel so bad because if I would have known earlier, I would have encouraged her to go to the hospital.
18. Teuila You’re mom would want you to remember all of the happy times you had. (pause) Like that one time that we went palolo hunting! Remember we were coming back to shore and your mom got hit by that big wave. We couldn’t see her but all we could see was a hand and a bucket above the water. She saved the palolo and wouldn’t share with anyone! Yeah, remember that?
19. Kiona (chuckles) I guess you’re right. (pause) Just promise me something Teuila. Remember how blessed you are to have your mom. And try to do what you can to make sure that she’s with you as long as possible. We only have one life.

28. Elia We are but I haven’t seen Ioane since his wife passed away.
29. Ete Yeah, Tasi told me that Sina had been ill for a while but eventually died of breast cancer. 30. Samuelu

31. Ete
Sina knew for years, but she didn’t do anything about it until it was too late because she

32. Elia I don’t know, but I wouldn’t know what to do if something happened to my wife, especially with our kids being so young.
33. Samuelu Well, it must be so hard for Ioane. But what more could he have done for her?
34. Ete Hey, as husbands we could be doing a lot more for our wives. The more I think about my wife, the more I realize how busy she is with just our family alone. In fact, she only slows down a little when I get home from work – and I know it’s not easy for her.
35. Samuelu (Sarcastically) Yeah, you’re so right. My wife needs to take care of herself, so she can take care of me too (chuckles).
36. Ete No, seriously. Women have so much to do, and their health is not a priority. We need to help them realize that without their health, they can’t do anything else.

42. Ete It was the same thing. But I was talking to the guys about Sina, because we haven’t seen Ioane. (pause) What was Sina so afraid of?
43. Tasi There were a lot of things. She didn’t want to know because of the burdens it causes the family.
44. Ete Burdens? What about the burdens that Ioane and their children bear now? Now that Sina is gone?
45. Tasi Unfortunately, Sina realized that when it was too late. (pause) But she really helped me see that we only have one life, and we have to take care of it like a precious gift.
46. Ete Yeah, I’ve really been noticing that too. I’ve been thinking that we could start doing some things differently, like stop smoking and maybe walking to church instead of taking the car.

Last time on “Tasi le Ola”, family and friends felt the loss of Sina’s death from breast cancer. Tasi took the advice of her late friend and went for a breast cancer screening. 5. Ete: Yeah, isn’t that the way it normally is? We don’t know what we have, until it’s gone. Even I thought that I was just getting old because I didn’t have any energy, but now that we’ve been eating better, walking, and stopped smoking, I feel like a new man!
6. Tasi: (sassy) Well, the reflection in the mirror looks like the old one to me! (chuckles)

12. Tasi: Are you sure?
13. Ete: Yeah, well why don’t you go and talk to your doctor while I go see my girlfriend over there.

We both have daughters the same age, and now I won’t see Kiona grow up, get married, see my grandkids. And cancer is even in your family with your mom and aunty. Please, don’t wait like me. (weaker)Don’t be afraid. (weaker) You only have one life…
