FinanceGive a definition for each of the terms listed Self Financed Self financing means that you are providing your own money needed for your

project instead of applying for money of investors.

Employer/Client FinancedThe client of the project provides the money for the company to complete the

project. KickstarterKickstarter is an online company that’s mission is to help bring projects to life. They

have been found to receive over one million In pledges, from 5.7 million donors, to fund 135,000 projects. The projects can include films, food, video games, journalism, comic and music.

In exchange for peoples pledges they are offered amazing awards and experiences.

FinanceWhich source of funding will be most likely for your production and why? Self finance will most likely be used in this project because the vegetarian society can provide

the money themselves for you to work with on your project. Kickstarter may also be interpreted when thinking about finance because The Vegetarian

Society might think that they need more money and help of others that are willing to contribute money towards the project.

Advantages Easiest and quickest money to secureNobody has to be convincedIt eliminates shareholders and partners you have to work withAll of the profits and wealth go to your company

DisadvantagesLimited resources can limit the size of the business Limited resources also limit the growth of the project for the future The entrepreneur is the only one at risk, if the project fails, the entrepreneur is the one that has

to deal with all the problemsThe entrepreneur might not have all the knowledge and skills to complete the project

FinanceExplain the aspects of your production that could require finance.

There are many different aspects that I am going to need to think about when it comes to production that require finance. Such as:

The photography that needs to be taken of the food will require a photographer of which we need to pay for. We also need to pay for a Graphic designer and a chef. The ingredients of the food that is going to be required is also an aspect. The location that we may need to travel to will also have to be paid for, along with the travel costs. Equipment hire you may need this for capturing your images and printing. The printing costs also need to cover ink and paper. You will probably need a tripod, artificial lighting, and stands to place the food on and possibly a green screen.

Studio hire, you may be required to hire a studio to take photographs for the best outcome images. If you are working in a studio to photograph the food it will be much faster to get the right images you want.

Hiring photographer/graphic designer/costume designer/make up designerThe location may depend on the Social class, for example a higher social class may want

the food to be shown in a different location to look really smart, where as a low social class will just find a plain background suitable.

TimeWhat methods could you employ to ensure you stick to your deadlines and why would this be beneficial to your project? Using examples from your own experiences can help you add detail here.

To help my project run smoothly I am going to create a schedule. This will the allow me to plan what I am going to do and at what time, this will make sure I do things fast and don’t run out of time, or run over time.

It will help me organise my crew, cast, locations and equipment, because I will know what time they are coming, what time I am locating to my set and also help me organise myself.

In my schedule I am going to include contingency time, this is so I won’t panic if anything in my project goes wrong, because contingency time is extra time added to things that could potentially go wrong, it allows me to not run out of time.

Page 6: Task 1 - Pre-Production Techniques Pro-Forma

TimeWhat is contingency time and how might this be beneficial to your project?Considering some general risks to your project could help you give a more

detailedresponse. Contingency is an event that may or may happen, but it is considered as a

possibility. Contingency time is time that is used in a schedule that is left blank for nothing to do. So if something happens to go wrong you can use the contingency time to make it right, without getting behind in your work.

Risks that may happen:People not sticking to the schedule and are late. The Vegetarian food going wrongEquipment hire could get mixed up leading to equipment not been correct. financial, for example non-payment by a customer or increased interest

charges on a business loanoperational, for example the breakdown or theft of key equipment

Page 7: Task 1 - Pre-Production Techniques Pro-Forma

PersonnelWhat size team will you use for your production (large or small)? How many

people will you have in your team? Consider the reasons for this. Think about theadvantages and disadvantages of your team size.I will have a small team of 3; including a Graphic designer, a photographer and a

Chef. The Advantages of my team size are that there isn’t to many, which means that the company will not have to pay to many people. There is 1 person per job, which means that the project will be completed quicker and in a less stressful manor. It will also be more organised because everyone will know what they’re doing due to their expertise of that subject. It will also bring in more profit because of the experience they have within that subject.

The disadvantages of this is that you will have to hire 1 person per job role. If you have a larger team they could share their experiences and potentially make the outcome better, then with a small team they only have 1 person per expertise. Another disadvantage is that they will need more equipment because of the 3 people doing their individual role.

Page 8: Task 1 - Pre-Production Techniques Pro-Forma

PersonnelWhat job roles would you have in your production and what skills and experience would be required? Think back to your early work on jobs roles and departmentsand also the skills you know you need to use to produce work. Drawing on your ownexperience as well as your industry knowledge will help you here. A photographerI will need a photographer to take the photographs of the food for the recipe card. The photographer

will need good experience in studios and with photographing food, this will then make the photographs better. A photographer will also need good knowledge of photographic equipment and Photoshop skills.

A Graphic DesignerA Graphic designer will need experience in Photoshop or another editing software. They also need

experience of working to a budget and deadline.

A ChefA Chef needs skills in cooking vegetarian food and also working to a deadline.

Page 9: Task 1 - Pre-Production Techniques Pro-Forma

PersonnelHow could you find people to be in your production team? Think back to

your owncareer development plans to help you with this. There are 2 different ways of finding people to be in your production team.

The first way is your own network, you can find people that have been your previous employees or an employer, or you could use your friends that you know have the experience.

The second option Is publishing a vacancy advert, this could be by publishing the advert in a local newspaper (york press) or you could publish an advert in a specific publication that is linked with your job role (photography magazine). And the last option is publishing an advert on a media job role website. www.mediauk.com/jobs

LocationsWhat method could you employ to identify locations needed for your

production (production/ post production facilities) and how could this be useful?

One way that you could use to find out which Locations suit your project the best is by using a Reece (location Scout) You tell them what project you are doing about what type of location you are wanting and they research into which would be the best options . They’re useful to find out a lot of things about the location such as How long does it take to travel to? Do you need permission to use it? Does it look appropriate for what you need? Is it safe to use? Does it cost any money to get to/use? There are some considerations you will need to think about when choosing your location such as

• Travel – it costs to travel places and to rent out a coach to travel to this place, depending on how big your team is depends on the size of the transport you require. It is best to use a location that isn’t far away so it would not be costly. This doesn’t effect the production I am doing because I will be working in a studio. Sometimes it costs to complete post production as well, after your project. Because this will consist of using a Mac computer, which you will need to access. This is not a problem for me because the studio and Mac computer are in College.

After you choose which locations are the best you also need to consider the limitations and risks that are involved when using this location. This could be anything from limiting the time you have to complete the project and if there are any hazards preventing you from completing the project.

Page 13: Task 1 - Pre-Production Techniques Pro-Forma

LocationsAre there any limitations or risks you would need to consider for your

locations?Location Limitation/Risk

Kitchen The risks that could occur in the kitchen could be very dangerous, because there is use of knives, stoves, gas, and hot pans. Which could potentially be burning and cutting hazards. (health and safety act)

Computer Room You will need to book a computer room, the limitations with this are that there are not always ones free, especially those with a Mac Computer in. Wires are also across the floor which could cause a tripping hazard.

Studio The studio will need to be booked for use, and if you do not do this early enough then it could become a limitation because you may not be able to use it when needed. Which could confuse you with the schedule.

Codes of Practice - ClearancesWhat is a model/location release form and why is it

important to your production?

A Model release form is a form from the employer that the model has to sign to confirm that they’re giving the photographer permission to photograph them. It also features a section which states what the photographs are going to be used for.

A location release form is a form that requires signatures of the location owner(s) to state that they’re allowed full access to take photographs of the location and what they will use in the location.

This is a very important release form because if it is not completed properly or not done at all then the company can potentially be sued for not being authorised to take photographs in the location.

A girl (Avril Nolan) sues company after putting her photographs in a HIV positive ad without her permission or a model release form.

Page 15: Task 1 - Pre-Production Techniques Pro-Forma

Codes of Practice - LegalWhat legal requirements will you have to consider in your project and what aspects do

they relate to?

Aspect of Production Legal ConsiderationPhotographs If I were to use stock Photographs (Images from other photographers) I

would need to pay them, otherwise I would break the copyright law.Photographs If I were to take my own I would need to make sure I have full

permission of the model and location owner shown on legal documents. Post -production I would need to make sure that I am following the health and safety act

when complete post production, especially when it comes to working in Mac rooms.

The Product I will need to make sure that the Recipe cards produced are exactly what the client asked for otherwise I would be in breach of contract

Page 16: Task 1 - Pre-Production Techniques Pro-Forma

Codes of Practice – Regulatory Bodies

Which regulatory body’s guidelines would you need to follow when creating your

production? Where could you source that information from. Be specific. When creating the recipe cards I would need to take into consideration the

following Regulatory bodies, Food safety act 1990. Which states that you need to be safe when it comes to children food, also you are not allowed to show a photograph of a food that doesn’t actually look like it does. It is not allowed to be described in correctly either.

The ASA (advertising Standards Authority) this authority makes sure that images aren’t harmful to anyone. They also make sure that it does not lie about what is contained in the food, especially when vegetarian. Food that contains fat and is fried is not advertised to children so should be shown out of reach.
