GENERAL QUESTIONS ABOUT MUSIC MAGAZINES (QUESTIONS 1-4)

 

-A music magazine is a magazine dedicated to music and music culture

-These magazines often include music news, reviews, interviews, photoshoots and consort reviews

-Music magazines are often focused on one genre of music, for example top of the pops is about the pop genre. However you can also get a more general music magazine that covers more types of music

-The purpose of the music magazine is to update people on a music and artists.

1. What is a music magazine?

-You would find articles on upcoming artists and songs and what their style is

-Also there will be a lot of reviews on consorts and new albums

-There might be articles on singers and bands life e.g. gossip stories and news on their lives.

2. What content (text/copy/writing/articles/stories) would you expect to find in a music magazine?

-Well took images on artists, consorts and instruments

-Photoshoots on the bands and singers that the articles are about

-Locations and venues of music related places. This will often fit in with the theme e.g. a hip hop magazine might have a graffiti covered wall in the background

3. What images would you expect to find in a music magazine?

-A general layout e.g. on each page there's a big picture of the band/singer and then on the other side there is an article on them

-There is a colour scheme that follows the type of genre e.g. a pop magazine would be light colours however rock would be dark colours

-There will be a theme to it e.g. a rap theme

-There will be articles on the people relating to the genre of music e.g. in a pop magazine there will be articles about Justin Bieber

4. Identify general characteristics/ Features that you would expect to find in all music magazines.

Questions about music magazines front covers (look at any of these 4 covers)

-All have a main image e.g. Top of the pops main image is of One Direction, this attracts people to the magazine because if they see an artist that they like as the main cover then they are likely too buy it

-All have some main colours (colour scheme) e.g. vibes main colours are red and white, the colour schemes help people associate the magazine to a genre and if they know the genre then they know if they are part of the target audience

-In all the magazines the masthead is large and attention grabbing e.g. Billboard is in black bold writing all down one side of the magazine, this makes the magazine iconic and if the magazine is well known then it will get a bigger audience and more money

-All the magazines have cover lines along the side of the magazine e.g. Kerang has a few of its articles in yellow boxes along the left side of the magazine, this helps to show the articles featured inside the magazine so people know if the magazine is worth reading

5. Identify the features/characteristics they all have 

-The masthead needs to be present because its how the magazine gets well known and recognisable

-The colour scheme is on each of the magazines because colour schemes help people associate the magazine to a genre and if they know the genre then they know if they are part of the target audience

-The main images on each of the magazine is there because this attracts people to the magazine because if they see an artist that they like as the main cover then they are likely too buy it

-All of the magazines involve cover lines because , this helps to show the articles featured inside the magazine so people know if the magazine is worth reading

6. Why are these features present on all of the magazines? Why are they important?

Top Of The Pops

-Genre is named in the masthead (it says pop in the title), this helps the audience know the type of genre

-The main cover image is of a pop band (One Direction), this is showing that it is mainly going to be about them and artists like them.

-Appropriate colour scheme (light colours e.g. baby pink) this is attracting a certain target audience, in this case the light colours would attract teenage girls mostly

-Language is very casual and gossipy, this makes the magazine more light hearted and fun which would attract a certain type of group, also they use informal language such as ‘reem’, this is current and trending which may attract more people

7. Take one of the magazine covers and say what type of music magazine it is (SUB-GENRE)

Top Of The Pops (young/teenage girls)

-The genre of pop is known as a very teenage girl genre and we know it is a pop magazine due too the masthead containing the word ‘pop’

-The main cover image is of a pop band (One Direction), and they are well known for being popular with young girls

-The colour scheme has light and girly colours such as baby pink, when people see these colours they associate it with young girls

-From the language used on the front page I can tell the articles on the inside are going to be gossipy and casual, an example of these is when they use the word ‘reem’, this word would only attract people who know the word and the people who are more likely to know the word are teenage girls.
