How does your product represent particular

social groups?

Page 2: Task 2

Gender within our media product • Within our media product we show the stereotypical gender roles, as

the male is seen as the dominant and the female vulnerable.• We show this by using higher camera angles to show the dominance

within the characters• By using stereotypical colours in the clothing it represents the

antagonist and the protagonist.• Our media product is stereotypical with the gender roles as the

female is the victim and the male is the antagonist.

Kezia CrebaParalysisWith this scene we made it so that we would have levels that would show the antagonist being “higher” than the protagonist, to show the dominance between the two characters.

Rosamund Pike Gone girl Within this scene what you can tell is that the husband seems to be in dominance as she is placed more towards the ground, just like within our media product. This is to show the stereotypical gender dominance that is in psychological thrillers.

From researching the representation of gender through film, I have gathered that women are generally seen as lower then man within the film industry and on screen which is shown in the films as the men are always placed higher above the females. But over the years it is clear that as the feminist groups are making more of a stand, it is changing the industry as movies are now about empowering women that don’t need to be saved by a macho man. This can be seen within the film Gone Girl as it shows the women taking revenge into her own hands, which shows her intelligence through her actions throughout the film.

Similarities The use of dark clothing in both films shows the “antagonist” in a stereotypical way.

By both films using lower levels for the females it is showing the stereotypical conventions of gender.

Age • The characters within our film are both teenagers • Kezia( The main character that is played by Kezia) is a stereotypical teenage girl

who is wearing lighter clothes to indicate that she is pure.• Within our media product compared to other psychological thrillers we made the

character younger than what the main characters are usually aged. The reason for this being that we wanted to appeal to the younger audience that is more attracted towards thrillers. • Normally within psychological thrillers the main character is older and lives with

either themselves or close friends/family, but with our product we made it so that she still lives with her parents, by doing this, more of a younger audience would watch it as they would be able to relate to it more than an older person would.

Main character from Paralysis our media product 19 years oldLives with parents Suffers from sleep paralysisIs an extravert Has no job

Compared to a real psychological thriller, our product is different in the sense that we didn’t follow the codes and conventions of age with this genre as we wanted to change it and make something more suited towards younger people.

As the character in Hush is wearing light colours there is a similarity with the clothing as in our media film the main character is also wearing light clothes which helps to give the audience an indication as to what and who the characters are playing.

Antagonist from HushWearing black so that he can blend in with the darkness Wearing a mask to hide his identity Manipulating main character for his benefit Age mid thirties (unclear)

Compared to the other character within our media product this character has a lot more in common with the antagonist then she does due to the fact that we tried to follow this code and convention to make it more reliable as a psychological thriller.

From comparing our media product to an actual psychological thriller, our product is very similar, as we used inspiration and the codes and conventions of a psychological thrillers to create each character so that the audience would feel more comfortable with the film as they would be used to the genre.

How does your product represent particular social groups?

Our media product represents particular social groups through the use of our mise en scene, camerawork and editing. Whilst we were filming, we made sure that the bedroom that we were using was like a stereotypical girls room so that the audience would have some knowledge on her before things start to make more sense later on. By using stereotypical colours to represent each character it makes the movie more realistic in film world. Within psychological thrillers the main character tends to change themselves through the movie to get through with what is happening to them and to show their true psychological state. As she is seen as a young person the change would be drastic and we would show this through her make up and clothing, which the audience would notice as everything about her is changing. The antagonist is a very stereotypical villain within our product as we wanted to keep something that would represent the genre and character. As most antagonists wear black so that they can blend into the darkness we wanted to use this idea within our product through the lighting and use of shadows. In one of the scenes the antagonist is seen in the mirror by the main character and then disappears when she turns around. We wanted to show through mise en scene, camera work and editing that she is like every other young stereotypical teenage girl. Although we did not use the same age range for the characters compared to most psychological thrillers we have followed other codes and conventions to do with cmaera work, editing and mise en scene.
