Name: ______________ Block:___ Unit 2: Engineering Drawing I Task 2.1: Blind Drawing Activity Drawings are a critical part of engineering as they allow engineers to quickly and accurately communicate information about a product to the people/machines that will be building it. In this activity you will be building a product from the drawings produced by your partner. Procedure: 1) Make sure that you and your partner have 3-4 identical blocks each. 2) Place a manilla folder between you and your partner so that you have a place in front of you that your partner cannot see your blocks. 3) Build your blocks into a small structure. 4) Create a drawing of how your blocks should be arranged. When you're finished, hand this drawing to your partner. 5) Have your partner create the structure using the drawing as a guide. Make sure to keep the manilla folder raised so that your partner cannot see your structure. 6) When your partner is finished building, remove the manilla folder. Compare both of your structures to see how successful your partner was. 7) Repeat this process with your partner creating the drawing this time. 8) If there is time, repeat the process with additional blocks. Reflection: 1) Were you and your partner successful in creating the structures? If not what parts were difficult to communicate in your drawings? 2) Which parts of your drawings were particularly important for creating an accurate structure? Task 2.1: Blind Drawing Activity Drawings are a critical part of engineering as they allow engineers to quickly and accurately communicate information about a product to the people/machines that will be building it. In this activity you will be building a product from the drawings produced by your partner. Procedure:

1) Make sure that you and your partner have 3-4 identical blocks each.

2) Place a manilla folder between you and your partner so that you have a place in front of you that your partner cannot see your blocks.

3) Build your blocks into a small structure.

4) Create a drawing of how your blocks should be arranged. When you're finished, hand this

drawing to your partner.

5) Have your partner create the structure using the drawing as a guide. Make sure to keep the manilla folder raised so that your partner cannot see your structure.

6) When your partner is finished building, remove the manilla folder. Compare both of your

structures to see how successful your partner was.

7) Repeat this process with your partner creating the drawing this time.

8) If there is time, repeat the process with additional blocks. Reflection:

1) Were you and your partner successful in creating the structures? If not what parts were difficult to communicate in your drawings?

2) Which parts of your drawings were particularly important for creating an accurate structure?

Task 2.2: Drawing Notes I Drawings are used to ___________________________ to the people/machines that will create products. All drawings in this class should have ________________ marked on them to show how large they are. Dimensions must also have ______________________ at each end to indicate exactly which part the dimension is referring to.

Drawings must also have a ________________ in the lower right hand corner. This block communicates all of the basic information about a drawing.

Task 2.3: Sketching Practice You will now practice sketching objects using the conventions you have just learned. Sketch each of the following objects on a separate sheet of paper. Make sure to include dimensions and a title block in each drawing.

1) A wooden block 2) A chair 3) This piece of paper 4) An object of your own choice

Task 2.4: Drawing Notes II If an object is too large to draw a full-size picture of it on a piece of paper, a drawing can be scaled down.

_____________ is a ratio of a length used in a drawing to the actual length of the object. For the L-shaped box, 1 inch on the drawing represents 2 inches on the actual box. The scale is 1/2, or ______.

Task 2.4: Scale Practice

1) How long should a 3" side of the object be in this drawing?

2) What would the scale on the drawing be if you wanted to make it three times bigger than the actual object?

3) What is the scale if a 4-inch length on the drawing corresponds to a 4-foot length on the actual object?

scale: ______in. :_______in.

4) A building has a wall of windows that is 12 feet across. If a scale of 1:24 is used, how

wide is the wall of windows on the drawing, in inches?

5) Car designers build models of new designs because, unlike a drawing, a model can be seen from all sides. If you built a 1:10 scale model of a car that is 15 feet long, how long would the model be? Give your answer in inches.

6) If you are a carpenter following a 1:20 blueprint for a house and you measure one wall on the blueprint to be 8 inches long, how long should you build the wall for the house? Give your answer in inches.

7) If you discovered that the architect who made the blueprint made a mistake, and the scale should really have been 1:25, how would you need to change the length of the wall of the house? HINT: When writing the scale as a ratio, use the same units on both sides of the colon. For example: 1:4 means 1 inch: 4 inches, or 1 foot: 4 feet.

Task 2.5: Drawing Notes III Orthographic drawings are a specific type of _____ drawings. In orthographic drawings you only see one side of an object at a time. The required views are ___________, ___________, and ___________.

Task 2.6: Orthographic Drawing Practice I

1) Add dimensions and a title block to the following orthographic drawing of an L-Shaped block. Hint: Count the number of grid squares to determine the height.

3) The orthographic drawing below shows the top and front views. Notice that the dotted

lines show the position of the hole in the block, even though they are not visible on the top and front view. Draw the right-side view.

Task 2.7: Orthographic Drawing Practice II Circles: Front and Side Views. Because you cannot see the hole from the side, its location in the object is shown by hidden lines, drawn as short dashes. A centerline, drawn through the middle of the hole is indicated by alternating long and short dashes. Both hidden lines and centerlines are lighter than object lines.

1) Using the orthographic drawing below, sketch what you think the original object looks like.
