Candidate name: Theme: Architectural Exploration of Salford Quays

Predicted final outcome

My aim is to be able to produce a minimum of 50 landscape photographs for my shoot at Salford Quays. I will then look through the images I have taken and choose 10 images with the best quality and that can catch the general public’s attention. Once chosen, if needed I will then edit the images with Photoshop.

The predicted final outcome will be a set of 10 posters that advertise Manchester/Salford Quays. I hope at the end of this shoot I will have produced 10 high quality photographs that are up to high standards that are good enough to advertise Salford Quays/Manchester in a positive light.

As you can see the style of these images are very similar, especially the 2nd and 3rd images. I will definitely take inspiration from these images; I specifically love the contrast of darkness and light in these images. I think the use of light trails portrays the photographs as quite busy, however because you cannot see anything else in focus in the images apart from the buildings it keeps the focus on the landscape, which is another technique I like and will try to incorporate into my images.

The photo imaging equipment and medium that will be used and why

For this shoot I will have a choice of using one of three different DSLR cameras to take my digital still images, for this I can either use a Nikon D3100, Canon 7D or the Canon 1100D. Here are some comparisons of the cameras available:Nikon D3100: 14.2 effective megapixels.Canon 7D: ISO 6400, 18 megapixels. Canon 1100D: ISO 6400, 12 megapixels.The canon 7D or 1100D would be the best choice for what images I would like to take, because the high ISO means I would be able to take pictures with low lighting, like for the images I previously included with the light trails. For these images I would also need a tripod to keep the camera steady. The Canon 7D has more megapixels which means the pictures would be of better quality.

Techniques that will be used and how they will help convey the visual message

I have a few ideas on what images I would like to take in order to create images that can be used for positive promotional material. Because I will be travelling and taking a lot of photographs at Salford Quays, I plan to include iconic buildings like The Lowry, or the BBC or ITV Studios that are based in Media City. For the images I plan on taking I would like to include a main, recognizable building in the frame which will act as the main focus of the image with other things going on in the image, this will help to show what is actually available or based at Salford Quays/Media City. I also plan on taking images with the Salford Quays being the main focus in the frame.I think I want to take quite a few images at night when the natural lighting is fairly dark, so the lights that surround the Salford Quays are prominent, and stand out like the images I have used for my inspiration. For these images I will need a camera that has the capability of taking images with low light, so a camera with a high ISO setting would be ideal for these images. If I find something that I would like to keep as the focus point, I will use Aperture and Depth of Field to show what is the main focus of the image.

As you can see I am planning on visiting Media City, Salford Quays and The Lowry, this is because I think these areas are the most interesting areas as they include BBC and ITV studios based at Media City. The Lowry which has all the shops and cinemas. Finally Salford Quays because I think the contrast between the busy shopping, studios and offices along with the still water will be perfect for taking photographs. Also, I think that this area is quite a modern looking and aesthetically pleasing area, which will be perfect for showing this area in a positive light.
