Superfluous: An Architectural ProjectVernissage • Thursday, September 14, 6:30 p.m. Free Admission • In English and FrenchExhibition open to the public during our business hours through October 16 Alleyway installation open 24/7

Oh, unforeseen utility of the superfluous! Charity of great things! Goodness of giants!

Based on Les Misérables by Victor Hugo, this architectural project investigates shelter and homelessness. The exhibition includes 11 designs by the Architecture & Interior Architecture students of Odile Compagnon at the School of the Art Institute.

In the same year that the Alliance Française celebrates its 120th anniversary, Superfluous makes it possible for a new voice from a new generation of architects to make a difference. Innovative and inspiring, the project opens a conversation about the role we can play in the future of our community and our city.

This exhibition is made possible thanks to the Jean Bodfish Brown Memorial Fund and the support of the School of the Art Institute Architecture Department. Superfluous is part of Expo Chicago and the Chicago Architecture Biennial.

architectureMies Van der Rohe, Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan, László Moholy-Nagy: these are the names of the architects, Americans and immigrants from Europe, who built the Chicago skyline and its reputation as a uniquely modern city. Urban development by Burnham along the lakeshore was inspired by Haussmann’s grands boulevards in Paris. It's the French influence on the Windy City that the Alliance celebrates this fall with a series of talks and exhibitions presented under the umbrella of the second Chicago Architecture Biennial.

The Global Awards is run by the Cité de l’Architecture et du patrimoine in Paris under the patronage of UNESCO.

Q&A led in English, French, Italian or Spanish, all languages spoken by Jana Revedin.

The Novel of the Century: Hugo’s Masterpiece ExploredThursday, November 9, 6:00 p.m. In French and English“The story of how Victor Hugo’s classic novel came to life is a challenging, complex, and utterly engrossing epic all its own” — Publishers’ Weekly on David Bellos’ new book: The Novel of the Century: The Extraordinary Adventure of Les Misérables. Written by the renowned scholar of French literature, this book explores not only the story and themes of Hugo’s great novel, but also the context of turbulent 19th century French politics. It is written from Hugo's point of view during his political exile on the Island of Guernsey, and highlights the sheer difficulty of writing and publishing a book in France from that remote outpost. Randy Williams, former Alliance Française President, will explore the themes of Bellos’s book, illustrated by excerpts from Les Misérables and its many adaptations on the stage and screen. Wine and lite bites will be served.
