Cebu Pacific is world’s No. 1 in growth Among the world’s 30 largest low-cost carriers in 2007, Cebu Pacific (CEB) ranked first in terms of revenue passengers per kilometer growth, according to the Airline Business maga-zine’s May, 2008 issue. CEB was also ranked No. 23 in the world and No. 5 in Asia in total passengers carried in 2007. CEB carried a total of almost 5.5 million passengers in 2007, up 57.4% from 2006. This year, CEB expects to fly 7 million passengers as it takes delivery of new planes and expands its service domestically and internationally. CEB recently offered an unprecedented 500,000 seats for free with the passengers paying only for the surcharges and government tax. Southwest Airlines (USA) topped the low-cost carrier cate-gory with 88.7 million passengers, followed by Ryanair (Ire-land), EasyJet (UK), Air Berlin (Germany) and AirTran Air-ways. CEB joins Indonesia’s Lion Air (1) and the now defunct Adam Air (4), Malaysia’s AirAsia (2), and Deccan (3) of India in Asia’s Top 5. CEB has a fleet of ten A319s, eight A320s and two ATR 72-500 aircraft, flies to 14, soon to be 16, international destina-tions. It will also add Tuguegarao and Naga in its domestic network in June and San Jose (Mindoro) in July.

President to inaugurate Poro Point tourism complex Poro Point Freeport Zone — President Gloria Macapagal Ar-royo will lead today’s inauguration rites of a luxury hotel and a world-class nine-hole golf course here meant to put San Fer-nando City, La Union in the world map of major tourist and recreation destinations. The resort features 36 well-appointed luxury suites. Each of the hotel’s 45-square meter suite comes with exclusive amenities such as double-sized beds, a walk-in closet, a bathroom with separate shower and hot tub, hi-speed wire-less internet, iPod with docking station and surround sound system, coffee and tea maker, in-room electronic safe, and a balcony that offers breathtaking views of the South China Sea. The Cliffs Golf Course, meanwhile, is a nine-hole, par 72 all- weather championship golf course, designed by the Interna-tional Management Group (IMG) and maintained by Sta. Elena Properties, Inc. The golf course features a unique ocean hole that is un-doubtedly one of the best Par 3 holes in Asia. Playing from a variety of lengths, this medium to short Par 3 will require pre-cise club selection as the golf ball might end up flying over the cliff and landing in the sea.

Seniors’ Corner

There was no June meeting by the Seniors Council. In- stead, the seniors helped with the pre-preparation of foods needed for the Fiesta Filipina that was held on June 14 and 15, 2008. There was a lot of slicing, chopping, grating, wrapping, marinating of meats, etc. days before. The frying and grilling were done on the day of the fiesta. There was also an urgent need to wrap some more of the Eggroll and Banana Turon throughout the day. Even Dr. Noy Sulit wrapped eg-grolls! Business was brisk; we had to keep up with the demand. The lead per-son for the different kinds of food were: Angie Chico-Agustin, Marmy Sulit, and crew for the Kebabs; Evelyn Puno and Annie Covillo for the Pancit; Fili Francisco and crew for the Banana Turon; Elvie Berry and most of the membership for the Eggroll; Marietta Tungol for the Halo-halo; Adela Tan for the Adobo; Amy Mesina and crew for the Cantaloupe Drink. Grilling the kebabs and seemingly enjoying it were Neo Rabang and Pe-ter Sakach. Paul de los Santos, Judy Sorio-Jeffers, Precy Huebner, Nena Bittner and others manned the food booth and they were BUSY! The food line was said to be very long, it extended to the parking lot. Imagine that! Nita May did a tremendous job frying the eggrolls. She made sure there were no ‘rejects’. So did Letty Rabang, frying the banana turons. Lisa Hopkins and Carmen Chico were so busy admitting people they hardly had time to take a break. Lucila Rider had her booth selling handi-crafts, etc. and that too was busy. The First-Aid booth was manned by the nurses led by Sonia Tumanut. There were no major calamities but they were ready for it. It was cool in the shade for Mirla de los Santos while she managed the financial boom. The Sinag-Tala Dance Troupe and the Filipinettes did their presentations in the same excellent manner that they are known for. Besides being busy in the kitchen area, the Sampaguita Choir members would hurry up to the front when director Ping Bayani (recovering from head trauma) summoned them to sing their songs. And this was just the first day! The second day, Sunday, business and entertainment were done inside the FCC due to tor-rential rains earlier that morning. And we did it all over again! Our President Eric Sorio made it back from the Philippines and was there lending a helping hand where needed. All the hectic preparations were rewarded by the satisfaction and enjoyment seen in the eyes of all who attended. We highly commend Bong Tumanut for overseeing the fiesta activities and to Adela and Mike Tan for their expert management and coor-dinating abilities in the food service area. Thank you for your leadership. We also wish to thank all the hard-working members who worked equally hard, whose names may not appear here but we know who you are and we salute you. Our sincere thanks go also to all who brought food for the volun-teers. Fiesta Filipina 2008 is another remarkable milestone in the history of FAGKC!
