GANGA SAGAR PILGRIMAGE

Ganga Sagar Mela is held at Sagar Island every year in the month of January. On this

pious occasion, lakhs of pilgrims from various parts of India and outside take Holy Dip in

the river Ganges and offer prayers at Kapil Muni Ashram. The congregation of the

pilgrims at Sagar Island peaks on 15th January on the day of Makar Sankranti. The Police

of South 24-Parganas District welcome all the pilgrims visiting the Sagar Island. An

elaborate police arrangement for your safe, secure and convenient pilgrimage to Ganga

Sagar has been made by Sundarban Police District.

The 124 KM long stretch of journey from Kolkata to Ganga Sagar Mela ground is

completed in three stages. First, the pilgrims reach Kolkata by bus or train from various

parts of the country. After that, the pilgrims reach Lot No. 8 or Namkhana bus stand as

the case may be from where they take vessels / launches for crossing Muriganga River /

Hatania Doania River to reach Sagar Island. After reaching Kachuberia on Sagar Island

(pilgrims availing from Lot No 8) and Chemaguri on Sagar Island (pilgrims Vessels

availing Vessels from Namkhana ghat), the pilgrims again take buses / pre paid taxies for

reaching Sagar Mela Ground. The total road distance of Lot No. 8 and Namkhana from

Kolkata is 94 KM and 108 KM respectively. Keeping in view, the tide timings, availability

of vessels and number of pilgrims, district administration diverts the traffic of the

pilgrims to Lot No. 8 or Namkhana ghat from Kashinagar Natun Rasta More. The

pilgrims coming by train may reach Kakdwip or Namkhana Railway Station from where

they can go to Lot No. 8 (6 Kms from Kakdwip Railway Station) or Namkhana Jetty ghat

on foot or by rickshaw vans available at that point. After That, they can reach Sagar

Island after crossing Muriganga or Hatania Doania river.

Pilgrims going to Lot No. 8 first reach Harwood Bus-Stand (WBSTC/ CSTC) or Lot No.

8 Bus stand (for Chartered buses). At these bus stands, various facilities like toilets,

drinking water, police assistance booths, pilgrim's shed, medical camps, ticket counters

have been arranged for the pilgrims visiting Ganga Sagar Mela ground. From Harwood

Bus Stand / Lot No. 8 Bus stand, pilgrims have to reach the Jetty Ghats through various

pilgrim's roads which have been barricaded for safety and security of the pilgrims.

Keeping in view, the volume of traffic and the congestion of Jetty ghats, various drop

gates have been set-up across the barricaded pilgrim's roads for regulating traffic flow to
