1 - Hold the shuttle in your righthand between the thumb and fore-finger. Take the thread in the lefthand again between the thumb andforefinger.

2 - Take the thread around the lefthand to form a circle and hold again. The ‘bridge’ to work on is betweenthe forefinger and the middle finger.

3 - Keeping the shuttle thread taughtand holding it horizontally, pass theshuttle under both threads.

4 - Bring the shuttle back over thecircle of thread and under the shuttlethread.

5 - Drop the thread from around thefingers of the left hand still holding between thumb and forefinger andthen pull the shuttle thread taughtwhich causes the knot to be formed by the ring of thread and not theshuttle thread.

6 - Pick up the loop of thread overthe fingers again. The middle finger

of the left hand is raised making thefirst half of the double stitch slidedown the shuttle thread so that thethumb and forefinger can hold it.

7 - This completes the first half of thedouble stitch and the stitch will look

like this.

8 - Now pass the shuttle over thecircle of thread and back under the

shuttle thread.

9 - Again transfer the knot by draw-ing the shuttle thread taught andrelaxing the fingers of the left hand(as stage 5).

10 - Slide the second half of thestitch down to the first half. Thiscompletes the double stitch.

11 - A picot is formed by leaving aloop between double stitches. Leaveapprox 16mm for large picot and8mm for small picot.

How To Make A Double Stitch And Picot Ring:When working the double

stitch keep the beads which arethreaded onto the shuttle threadclose to the shuttle. The picotrings should be worked as if they are not there, the thread

being drawn through them.Once the picot ring is completeda bead will be slipped down thethread and placed in the centre.

12 - When the required number of double stitches and picots have beenworked, close the ring by gentlypulling the shuttle thread and tie tothe ring thread to secure.

13 - When making rings with beads in the centre, slip the bead into thecentre and then tie off the thread through picot number 5 (as shown above)and pull the thread to tighten the knot.

Making The Flower Chains:To make the flowers in a chain, hold the com-

pleted flower between thumb and forefinger of your left hand, loop the thread around left hand

and hold (as in step 2). Begin the second flowerapprox 6mm from the centre of the first flower.Complete in the same way as the first flower.

To Assemble The Card:Spread glitter glue in the pot area of the card

extending it beyond the edges as this will help toglue the card shut. Take care not to glitter insidethe tree aperture though!

Glue the card closed in the normal way.

Once the glue has dried, position and gluethe tatted flowers into place using the picture asa guide. Any large areas can be filled with addi-tional flowers if desired. Once the glue has dried, take the glitter glue and put a dot in the centreof each unbeaded flower. Add dots of glitter gluein the spaces between the flowers if you like.

Variations:Try varying the colours of threads, beads,

glitter and card used. Silver thread with red andsilver beads can look stunning mounted into

the red bordered card (see picture below). Howabout a piece of toning foil paper behind theaperture before you mount the tatting?
