A very warm welcome to the blog of Madhwa Brahmins community.
We, Madhwa Brahmins are followers of Jagadguru Sriman Madhwacharya. We originally hail
from places in Karnataka and the neighboring states of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil
Nadu and Kerala. Our main dialects are Kannada, Tulu, Marathi, Telugu and Konkani.
A brief background of Jagadguru Sri Madhwacharya:

As the above shloka from khila vAyustuti explains, Sri Madhwacharya (also known by the names
Poornaprajna and Anandateertha) is the third incarnation of Lord MukhyaprAna Vaayu, after Lord
Hanuman and Lord Bheemasena. He is the chief proponent of TattvavAda, popularly known as
Dvaita. He was born on Vijayadashami day of 1238 CE at Paajaka Kshetra, a small village near
Udupi. He is the 22nd commentator on the Brahma sutras of Lord Sri Veda Vyasa.
Kindly note that this blog contains important topics discussed in our Orkut community and some
articles on tattvavAda philosophy. All the topics can be found in the BLOG ARCHIVE (right side)

Udupi (tauLava or Shivalli) Madhwa maThas
Acharya Madhva established eight maThas in Udupi and handed over the responsibility of
performing pooja of Udupi Krishna idol and spreading of tatvavaada in the tauLava region. The
maThas were named in accordance with the names of the nearby villages where the maThas had
the most assets. Thus Palimaru, Adamaru, Krishnapura, Puttige, Shiruru, Sode, Kaniyuru and
Pejavara maThas came to be known as the ashTa-maThas of Udupi.
(Note: Sode maTha was earlier known as KumbhAshi maTha. During the time of Sri Vadiraja
teertha, the headquarters was shifted to Sode in UK district of Karnataka)
During Acharya Madhvas time the organization of the maThas was slightly different than now. There were three swamijis in each maTha. The oldest swami, was not involved in the
administration of the maThas affairs. Instead, he concentrated on teaching the youngest swami
as well as spent his time in meditation. The younger (middle) swami was in-charge of the daily
affairs of the maTha as well as performed other obligatory functions for the spiritual uplift of the
society in general. The youngest swami was usually a mere boy, being indoctrinated to ascend to
the higher position.
Many palm leaf scrolls belonging to 14th century onwards are preserved in various maThas in
Udupi. They are both in the Kannada and Tulu scripts. Many have been lost because of poor
preservation techniques. Some have made it to the modern print media and have been
published.
Researcher Sri Bannanje Govindacharya has had the privilege of seeing many of the preserved
texts from the maThas. With his immense knowledge and interest, Govindacharya, who is
proficient in Sanskrit, old Kannada and Tulu scripts, has been able to read these palm leaf
documents and translate many into Kannada.
Recently Dr Mukund of Rochester University accomplished a commendable mission of capturing
the images of palm leaf documents containing Sarvamoola granthas in a gold coated silicon
wafer, thus safely preserving them for the future generations.
Sri PalimAru maTha
The chief branch of Palimaru maTha is in the village Palimaru, which is about 7 km from
Padubidri, near Udupi. The maTha is located on the banks of river Shaambhavi. The main deity is
Sri Kodanda Rama with Seeta and Lakshmana, gifted by Acharya Madhva to the first yati.
Sri Hrishikesha teertha (1250-1330 AD) is the first yati of this maTha. He was also the first one
to be ordained into sanyaasa by Acharya Madhva. That is why the cycle of paryaya system for
Krishna pooje begins with this maTha. Sumadhwavijaya mentions that Sri Hrishikesha teertha
was one of the favorite disciples of Acharya Madhva. He used to read out the verses ofBhagavatha during discourses by his preceptor.
He has written Sampradaya paddati and Anumadhvacharita dealing with the early life and
works of Madhva. He has personally made a copy of sarvamoola granthas in Tulu script on palm
leaves, which is being carefully preserved in the maTha. (Same was copied on to silicon wafer,

The fifth maTha among the ashTa maThas of Udupi is Sri Shirur
maTha. The main branch of this maTha is in a village calledShirur in Udupi district. The first yati was Sri Vaamana teertha,
one of the direct disciples of Sriman Madhwacharya. The main

The present piiThAdhipati in the lineage, Sri Lakshmivara teertha, is the present chief of this
maTha. He was initiated at the age of 8 years in June 1971. Srigalu has completed three
paryayas in the years 1978-79, 1994-95, 2010-11. Srigalu is famous for beautifully andartistically decorating the Udupi Krishna idol both during his paryaya and that of others.
Sri Sode MaTha
The 6th maTha among the Udupi aShTa
maThas is the Sode maTha. Two great yatis of
all times have adorned the peeTha of this
maTha. They are Sri Vishnu teertha and SriVadiraja teertha.
Sri Vishnu teertha was the first peeThAdhipati
of Sode maTha. He was the younger brother of
Sri Madhwacharya in poorvAshrama. He is still
said to be alive and performing tapasya at the
Kumaradri hills near Kukke Subrahmanya. In
distant future he is supposed to revive the
Tatvavaada philosophy once again, which by
then would have become extinct. For this
same purpose Sri Madhwacharya is believed to
have preserved his sarvamoola granthas on
copper plates, and buried them in a place called Kadtila or Setutila. Incidentally, Sri Vishnu
teertha is alsothe founder of Kukke
Subrahmanya maTha.
Sri Sode maTha is unique amongst the Udupi
aShTa maThas in the sense that its
headquarter is situated at a place called Sode
in Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka, whereas
all the remaining 7 maThas have their
headquarters in Udupi district itself.
Interestingly, this maTha was originally known
by the name KumbhAshi maTha, with main
branch at KumbhAshi near Udupi. (Sri Vadiraja
teerthas birth place Huvinakere is very near
to KumbhAshi.) But during the time of Sri
Vadiraja, the main branch of this maTha got
shifted to Sode, and then onwards it came to
be known as Sode maTha.The main deity of Sode maTha is Sri
BhUvarAha, presented to Sri Vishnu teertha by Sri Madhwacharya himself. This idol is known for
its beautiful iconography with one thigh of VarAha supporting BhUdEvi, and another leg on the
hood of a serpent. Along with this idol, the idol of Lord Hayagreeva is also worshiped in this

the temple town of Udupi, he built the Sri Bhoovaraaha guest house at Udupi.
14. The construction of Vadiraja Mandira was also taken up during his fourth Paryaya.
15. Sri Bhootaraaja shrine was renovated and a Gopura was built at Sri Sode Mata, Udupi.
It was the period of the annual Chaturmasa observance in 2007. On the auspicious day of 18-08-
2007, (Shravana Shuddha Panchami Sthiravaasara) the Swamiji completed his daily Puja and
gave Teertha-prasaada to the devotees assembled there, participated in the congregation at
Raajaangna and blessed the audience. Following this, Sri Vishwottama Swamiji blessed all the
devotees with Phalamantraakshate. Chanting 'Raama, Raama, Raama clearly and with a cheerful

Swamiji
Soon after the initiation, the young Swamiji mastered the regulations governing the performance
of worship and the Nitya Naimittikas at the Matha under the able guidance of his Guru, Sri
Vishwottama Tirtha Swamiji, assisted by Vedamurthi Konandur Sri Gopala Acharya. His Holiness
Sri Sri Vidyaasaagara Tirtha, head of Sri Krishnapura Mata taught him Vedanta and all
scriptures. While Udayakumar Saralatthaya taught him the Vedapaathas, Raghavendra Puranik
trained him in Vyakarana.
Sri Sri Vishwa Vallabha Tirtha Swamijis unprecedented achievements in the field of
education and administration:
Swamiji paid special attention to the educational institutions established by his great Guru, at
Innanje, Udupi. These institutions ranging from Pre-primary class to high school and Pre-
university college are functioning successfully. A new building has been constructed to
accommodate the students studying in standards 8 to 10. A high school with English as the
medium of instruction has been established for the benefit of the students of rural areas.
To him goes the credit of establishing at record time the Sriman Vadiraja Technological andManagement Institute. Swamiji evinced great interest and initiated the completion of several
developmental works started by his Guru, at the original Mata at Sode.
In addition to the above achievements, Swamiji constructed a new 'Goshala', and enhanced the
beauty of the place by constructing Vrundavanas, gardens and parks. The birth place of Sri
Vadiraja's mother was Renjaala. The branch of the historic Mata in Renjala was in a very
dilapidated condition, realizing the unique importance of the place, Swamiji renovated the
building. In accordance with the fond wish of his Guru, Swamiji took over the administration of
the Vishnumoorthi temple at Undaaru.
With a view to promoting literature and disseminating Sri Madhwa's philosophy, he startedpublishing a quarterly magazine called 'Tatwa Mallika.' Additional accommodation was one of the
crying needs experienced by the pilgrims who went to Sode. The Swamiji mitigated their
hardships by constructing Rajadhama lodges.
Sri Kaniyooru maTha
The seventh maTha among Udupi maThas is
Sri kANiyUru maTha. It derives its name from
the village of Kaniyuru where we can find the
main branch of this maTha. The first
peeThAdhipati of this maTha was Sri Rama
teertha who was one of the direct disciples of
Acharya Madhva. Sri Madhva bestowed on him
the icon of Yoga Narasimha to worship. This
icon has four hands and is seated on a
swastika symbol. In His two hands, He holds
the shankha and chakra and his other two
hands are held on his lap.

Sri Pejavara MaTha
Sri Pejavara maTha is the last in the list of Udupi aShTa maThas. It derives its name from the
village Pejavara where there is the original branch of this maTha.
The first peeThAdhipati of this maTha is Sri Adhokshaja teertha who was one of the direct
disciples of Acharya Madhwa. He received the icon of Sri ViThala with SridEvi and BhUdEvi from
Madhwacharya. An icon of Sri Rama is also worshipped here along with the main icon. This

Sri Bandarakeri MaTha
Besides the 8 maThas of Udupi, there are two more maThas coming under the category of
tauLava maThas (from the tulu-speaking belt). One is Sri Bandarakeri maTha, which is
headquartered at BARKUR in Udupi district.
Sri Bandarakeri maTha traces its origin from Sri Achyutha prajna, and then through Sri
Madhwacharya and Sri Sathya teertha. The same maTha is said to have bifurcated into Sri
Bheemana kaTTe maTha (of Theerthahalli taluk).

The 30th peeThAdhipati Sri Vidyamanya teertharu was a great scholar. Some of his disciples are
:
Sri Vishwesha teertha (of Pejavar maTha),
Sri Vidyadeesha teertha (of Palimaru maTha),
Sri Vishwapriya teertha (of Admaru maTha),
Sri Sugunendra teertha (of Puttige maTha),
Sri Vidyesha teertha (of Bandarakeri maTha)
and Sri Bannanje Govindacharya.
Sri Kukke Subrahmanya maTha
Sri Subrahmanya maTha (also called sampuTa narasimha maTha) is situated to the southeast of
the outer quadrangle of Kukke Subrahmanya Temple (Dakshina Kannada district, Karnataka).
This maTha was established by Sri Madhwacharya himself. He appointed his poorvashrama
younger brother Sri Vishnu teertha as the first peeThAdhipati of this maTha.
SampuTa Narasimha
When Sri Madhvacharya visited Badarinath, he was presented eight saligrama shilas known as
'Vyasa mushti', by Sri Vedavyasa devaru. Six of these saligramas are presently being
worshipped in this maTha.
-
7/25/2019 Tattvavaada Philosophy_ Madhwa MaThas
16/26
Along with the Vyasamushtis, Sri Vedavyasa devaru also
gave Madhva a Narasimha saligrama, which is said to be
very powerful. Madhvacharya placed this Narasimha
saligrama in a box (sampuTa), along with 22 Lakshmi
Narayana shilas and 5 Vyasamushti shilas. (only one
Vyasamushti shila is worshipped outside the box)
Although the Narasimha saligrama is worshipped daily, it
is always kept inside the box, except for bathing. Only themaThAdhipati of this maTha can open this box and touch
the saligrama inside. Nobody else is allowed to see this
Deity. If the peeThAdhipati of the maTha becomes sick,
then on those days only the pooja rights of this saligrama
goes to the swamiji of Sri Pejavara maTha in Udupi.
The first maThAdhipati Sri Vishnu teertha is said to be still
residing in the forests in Kumara hills nearby where he is
performing tapas. He sometimes returns to the maTha to
perform puja to the Samputa Narasimha. Many devoteeshave heard the sound of bells inside the garbha-griha late at night when the temple is locked !
The second maThAdhipati of this maTha was Sri Aniruddha teertha (also a direct disciple of Sri
Madhwacharya). During his time, King Ballala Raya of the Hoysala Dynasty stole the box
containing the Narasimha saligrama.
Desiring to see the Deity, he hired four blacksmiths to forcibly open the box. Unfortunately,
when they tried, they all died on the spot. The king also tried to open the box by having an
elephant stand on it - the result was that the elephant also died immediately.
Because of this great offense, King Ballala Raya felt a great burning sensation within his body,
and it was only when he returned the Samputa Narasimha to Sri Aniruddha teertha and obtained
his blessings that he was relieved from his malady.
(In the compound of the Subrahmanya temple there is a statue of King Ballala Raya which
commemorates this incident. Pilgrims offer him cotton, mustard, butter and pumpkin to cool his
body down.)
It is also believed that Sri Vishnu teertha had in fact carried the Samputa Narasimha saligrama
(with the box) along with him to the forests, and sent back the same through the Kumara Dhaara
river, upon request by Sri Aniruddha teertha.
Along with the saligamas, there are a number of other Deities, which belonged to previous
pontiffs of the maTha, including a Laksmi-Narasimha Deity and Deities of Vittala, Rukmini and
Satyabhama.
The present maThAdhipati is Sri Vidyaprasanna teertha swamiji, and he runs an educational
institution at a place called biLinele.

Sri Raghavendra Swami maTha
.Sri Raghavendra Swami maTha has its headquarters at
Mantralaya and devotees all around the world. The name
Raghavendra maTha came into being after Sri
Raghavendra teertha (or Rayaru) adorned the peeTha of
this maTha. The main deities worshiped in the maTha
are Sri Moola Rama and Digvijaya Rama devaru, both
gifted by Sri Madhwacharya to Sri Padmanabha teertha.
History:
In the history of this maTha, one notable incident has
taken place, because of which, even now there is contention between this maTha and Uttaradi maTha.
Sri Ramachandra teertharu was the 9th peeThAdhipati of this maTha, starting from Sri Padmanabha

teertha. He ordained Sri Vibudhendra teertha as the next pontiff of the maTha. One day Sri
Ramachandra teertha, who was old, was feeling unwell and he realized that his end was nearing.
Unfortunately at that time his junior Sri Vibudhendraru was on sanchaara and he could not be
reached, as his whereabouts were not known.
After passing away of the senior swamiji, the maTha officials and the elders of Yaragola town buried
the "devara peTTige" underground and waited for the return of Sri Vibudhendraru to pull out the
devara peTTige and ascend the peeTha. Even after long time Sri Vibudhendraru did not return fromsanchara. So, the maTha officials and the elders of Yaragola town made Sri Vidyanidhi teertha, who
was from the Tulu-speaking region, as the peeThAdhipati of the maTha.
Finally one day Sri Vibudhendraru returned from sanchara and came to know about the new
arrangements. He was not allowed to ascend to the peeTha even though the senior yati had ordained
him only to be the successor. So he established his maTha at Kumbhakonam and gathered many
disciples to spread the teachings of Madhwacharya in the south. The maTha gained more prominence
after Sri Raghavendra teertha adorned the peeTha. Later it came to be known by the name
Raghavendra maTha.

Sri Uttaradi MaThadharmO rakShati rakShitaH
"Protect the Dharma it will protect you", proclaims our
ancient lore. Uttaradi Math, abides by this dictum in all
circumstances. Its chief mission is to practice, protect,
preach and propagate the ancient Vedic dharma. Since the
time of its origin, till to date, Sri Uttaradi Math (UM), has
been and continuing to be the strong propounder of the
true Vedic Dharma. All the great AchAryAs who
successively adorned the seat of UM, are well known for
their eagerness and commitment to protect this Dharma.
nAnA janasya shushrUShA kartavya karavAnmitEH
Service to mankind is an obligation for all. UM follows this
aphorism very closely. The Math is very much committed
in extending service to mankind in all spheres of life like
Medical care, Education, Disaster/Calamities/War etc. UM
has been blessed with great scholars from centuries. To name a few, Sri Padmanabha teertha,
Sri Jayateertha, Sri Raghuttama teertha, etc.
Sri Padmanabha Tirtha is foremost among the direct disciples of Sri Madhvacharya. He was a
distinguished scholar and was recognized and honored by people of those times. He has the
greatest honor of lecturing on the Vedas before an assembly of great scholars and was
acclaimed to be a master in expounding the meanings of the Vedas. He is known for his learning,
intelligence, ever lasting devotion, and detachment to worldly affairs, service to his guru, etc. He
was accredited to be the first to write a commentary, on the great Bhashya of Sri Madhva, which
ably brings out the true meaning of the Bhashya. With all these extraordinary qualities, he has
rightly succeeded Sri Madhva in the pontificial seat of Sri UM. He was pontiff of the maTha for 6
years and 10 months Shri Jayateertha is believed to be an avatar of Indra with Aavesha of
Shesha and blessed by goddess Durga ( Shri Mahalaxmi) with a writing instrument and a piece ofareca nut the former to write with the commentaries on Madhva original works on palm leaves
and the latter to smear the writing to make it permanent.
Sri Jayateertha, a name to conjure with, renounced the world at a very young age and devoted
himself to the service of all round spread of madhva's philosophy and within a short time he was

Sri Kashi MaTha
The Kashi Mutt was founded in the year 1542 AD.
Before the Kashi Mutt came up, most of the
Vaishnava Gouda Saraswat Brahmins were followers
of Shri Uttaradi Mutt.
In 15th century, Sri Ramachandra Tirtha of Uttaradi
Mutt initiated two to sanyasa - Sri Vibhudendra
Tirtha and Sri Vidhyanidhi Tirtha. The latter becamehead of Uttaradi Mutt and Sri Vibhudendra Tirtha
founded a new Mutt at Kumbhakonam which came to
be known as Purvadi Mutt (later became
Raghavendra Swamy Mutt since the great saint
Raghavendra of Mantralaya fame belonged to this
Mutt). Because of its proximity to South Kanara and
Kerala, the Gowda Saraswats were transferred to
this Mutt.
Later when Sri Surendra Tirtha became the head of the Mutt at Kumbhakonam,
one of his disciples, Vijayindra Tirtha undertook a Chaturmasya at Cochin in
15391540. Here, he selected Sri Hanumantha Bhaktha and was given deeksha
as Sri Yadavendra Tirtha.
Yadavendra Tirtha went on to become head of the new Kashi Mutt at Varanasi
established in 1542 AD. Shri Kumbhakonam Math gave two idols of Shri Vyasa
and Shri Raghupati to Shrimat Yadavendra Tirtha along with the rights to guide
the Gouda Saraswats.

Sri Kanva maTha
Basically the disciples of kanva matha are followers of shukla yajurveda
system propounded by yajnavalkya maharshi. the h.q. of kanva matha is
in hunsihole in surpur taluk of gulbarga district. the first yati to sit on the
peetha of kanva matha was shri madhava thirtharu whose mula
brindavana is in buddhini in lingasguru taluk.
shri madhava thirtharu's purvashrama name was shri
venkateshacharyaru.from childhood only shri venketeshacharyaru had a special of shri shesha

came in the dream of venkateshacharyaru and told him that in a few days a yati from the
parampara of madhwacharyaru will come to your town go to him and request sanyasa from him
and preach hari sarvottamatva. and at the same time sesha devaru had also come in the dreamof peethadipathi of shirror matha shri lakshmimanohara thirtharu and told him that in surpur a

glowing face and understood he is no common man. and immediatly shrigalu took
venkateshacharyaru along with him to udupi.. at udupi shri lakshmimanohara thirtharu gave
sanyasa to venkateshacharyaru in divine presence of all yatis of udupi ashta mathas. and the
matha that came down from him came to be known as kanva matha...
