6 November 2019 Week 5 Term 4

PRINCIPAL’S PIECE

Sun Smart It is great to see student’s remembering to bring their hat to school now that we are in Term 4. As per our Sun Smart Policy, all students are required to wear their hats when outside. This of course includes PE and any other outdoor activities. Please ensure that hats are named, which will assist us in returning ones that are misplaced.

Planning for 2020 Are you leaving the school in 2020? With the year’s end fast approaching, we are beginning to

plan for 2020. To assist us in this planning, if you are leaving the school in 2020 we would appreciate you letting us know as soon as possible- thank you to the parents who already have informed the school. Parents of students transitioning to secondary school need not notify us.

School Structure and Class Placement: next year we will be running 11 classes: 2 X Foundation; 3 X Grade 1/2, 3 X Grade 3/4 and 3 X 5/6. Very shortly we will commence the process for allocating students to classes for 2020. As mentioned in our previous newsletter, the process each year is a complex and considered one, to enable the best learning environment for all. Parents may have academic, social and/or emotional information regarding their child they would like us to consider. These requests need to be made in writing, addressed to either myself or Susanne Gill by Friday 29th November. In fairness to all, we do not accept requests for a specific teacher; however, we make every attempt to accommodate requests based on academic, social and emotional needs.

In-school Transition: later in the term the school organises an in-school transition program to support our students as they transition to the next school level.

Transition to Secondary School: Tuesday 10th December our current Year 6 students attend an Orientation Day at their prospective secondary schools.

2020 Foundation Students: this coming Friday will be the first of 3 transition days for next year’s Foundation students. If there are any families in our school community who know of any children who have not yet enrolled, please encourage them to contact the school.

Parent Helpers Morning Tea Our parent and community helpers morning tea will be held on Friday 13th December at 11am in the library. It is a staff initiative to acknowledge and show appreciation for the support and assistance that parents (and other family members) and community members provide in a range of school activities throughout the year. Please note the

date and time in your diaries. Further information will be forthcoming closer to the event. Basketball Tournament Last Friday Mr Nihill and a group of grade 5/6 students proudly represented TPS at the Shepparton Regional Basketball Tournament. Our students displayed exemplary sportsmanship and teamwork, winning 3 out of 4 games. We would like to thank Madeleine Rejis who coached the boys and Amanda Hamilton for providing transportation to the game. Both Mr Nihill and Miss Rejis were very proud of the team! Thank you also to the parents who took time out of their day to go and support the team.

Maths Matters MAKE A DOLLAR

Place twenty 5 cent coins and twenty 10c coins in a dish in

the middle of 2-4 players. Players take turns to roll the

dice and take as many coins as is shown on the dice. For

example, if you roll a 4 you can take four coins from the

collection. It is up to the player whether they take 5 or 10

cent coins or a mix.

The amounts are added up as you go and the aim is to be

the play who gets as close to one dollar without going

over.

GAME OF NIM

Place counter in a pattern like the diagram

below. Players take it in turns to remove one

or two counters. The winner of the game is

the player who removes the last counter.

Play 5 times, can you see a pattern?

How many squares can

you see?

Use different shaped pas-tas, nutrigrain, nuts & bolts, coins, buttons, bottle tops to

practise counting and pat-terns.

HOW WE TEACH YOUR CHILDREN READING AT TATURA PRIMARY

The Instructional Model we are sharing with you today is the Reading model.

During each reading lesson, teachers will begin by ‘Tuning In’ the students. They will share the Learning In-

tention and Success Criteria so students know what will happen in the lesson and how they can be success-

ful. They engage the learners by practising fluency, comprehension or vocabulary activities.

During the ‘Explicit Teaching’ section, teachers will model a skill to the whole class that they want the stu-

dents to learn. This may be done through a mentor text, class novel, PowerPoint etc.

‘Have a Go!’ is the main part of the lesson. This is where students will use the skill they have just learnt and

apply it to an activity that is differentiated to their ability. Students may participate in a guided reading ses-

sion, independent reading or conferencing.

‘Reflection’ time is where students can share their thinking. They are given time to turn and talk, be the

teacher and receive feedback. They will hear the Success Criteria again so they know if they have achieved

success during the lesson.

Next week we will introduce the ‘Writing’ model.
