When Elizabeth Eckford arrived at her new school, an angry mob was waiting.

They jeered at her and blocked her from entering the building.

But that didn’t stop her. A few weeks later, Eckford returned. This time, soldiers protected her . . .

. . . and she became one of the first African American students to attend Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas.

When 20,000 Chicano students (and some teachers) in Los Angeles took to the streets to demand a better education . . .

. . . the police were waiting. They beat some students and arrested others. But the students made their voices heard.

Their protest drew attention to injustice in the schools— and led to fairer treatment of Chicano students.

When Ryan White contracted HIV from a medical treatment . . .

. . . he was banned from school. He posed no risk to others, but the school board wouldn’t let him attend class.

White fought the decision in court. It took nine months, but he won. He returned to school.

Shannon Faulkner was accepted at The Citadel, an all-male military college.

But when the school found out that Faulkner was female, they turned her away. She battled the school in court for two years—and became the first female cadet at the college.
