TAWAS UNITED METHODIST CHURCH October 2019 Volume 46 Issue 10 The Truth Project is coming. Its almost here. Will you sign up and attend Sunday evenings starting October 13? Its a video class with discussion opportunities. Why should you attend? It might be more appropriate to ask, Why should you miss even one week of this opportunity? The fact is that truth is what so many people need, and at the same time it is what so many people reject. Extreme conflicts in society today desperately need solutions based on truth. Broken relationships are evidence of a loss of truth. Many people flat out reject the truth and then scratch their heads unable to explain the chaos in their world. We live in a culture that believes everything is relative. There is a rejection of objective truth in our society. You might imagine the effect this has on what people think of as true. On the other hand, the Bible makes bold truth-claims. Believers should be concerned about the truth because thats what Jesus stood for. Here are four rather bold statements Jesus made about truth: 1. Sanctify them by the truth, your word is truth. This was a prayer Jesus prayed to his heavenly father in John 17:17 2. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice. With these words, Jesus answered his interrogator, Pontus Pilate in John 18:37, 3. 31If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free. Amazingly Jesus spoke these words to his disciples in John John 8:31-32. 4. I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.Jesus quoted in John 14:6 as he prepared to return to heaven. Since Jesus was all about truth, we can be sure that a firm grasp of the truth will prove helpful when interacting with, and even praying for, those who doubt. You can be sure that a firm foundation on truth will help to build faith and confidence as a follower of Jesus Christ. So come, and learn many interesting aspects of the truth you may have not thought of before. This will be an excellent opportunity to invite people of all ages. The skeptical, the searching, those with questions, and the lost can all find clear direction and the love of God through a matter-of-fact look at truth throughout history and today. I hope we will have a good turnout for the Truth Project. Blessings, Pastor Kris

You will notice the Operation Christmas Child boxes are in the Gathering Space. Please take one box or multiple boxes if you choose that you would like to fill with the suggested items for either a boy or girl. Inside the box is the information you will need along with two rubber bands to secure the box with. Please be sure to tape the boy or girl tag on the top of the box and check the age level the box is for as well. There are some items that are not accepted like candy, toothpaste, gum, used or damaged items, war-related items, seeds, food, liquids or lotions, medication or vitamins. Please be sure not to include any breakable items either. Missions will pay the $9.00 shipping cost for the shoebox. All of the OCC boxes MUST be to the church by Sunday, November 17th, so they can be taken to the drop-off center. Thank you!

FLOWERS FOR THE ALTAR

If you have a special anniversary, birthday, new baby or you would like to remember someone, you can celebrate these occasions by placing flowers on the altar. There is a chart on the wall outside the Church Office where you can fill your name in on that special date and they will be ordered for you. If there is a certain color or flower you want, just ask. Cost is $30.

NAME TAGS

If you have been to one of the services at church lately, you noticed your name tag is in a new place. In order to have everyone wear their tags they are now in holders located just outside the Sanctuary. We want to be sure that our new members know who you are and that you know the new members. Everybody likes to be called by their name, so please look for your tag in the holders, if you cannot locate yours and you do not have one at home, please let Pat Fisher know and a new one will be made for you. After service, place your name tag in the basket marked Name Tags. Thank you!

GRIEF SUPPORT PROGRAM 2019

St Joseph Health System provides a variety of Grief Support services for our patients, families, employees and members of the area community. They include Grief Support groups which are held monthly, on Thursday from 3:00 to 4:30 PM at St Joseph Hospital in Classroom C. These groups provide support and information for anyone whose life has been disrupted by a significant loss due to death of a loved one. All sessions are facilitated by qualified member of our Spiritual Care Team. There is no fee, however Advance Registration is appreciated. To register please call 362-9368 and talk with Chaplain Michael Sullivan, Manager Spiritual Care.

FROM THE STEWARDSHIP COMMITTEE As we finish up our September Gratitude Campaign, we want to thank all those who helped make this such a success. From the presenters to the music to the cooks to the table movers, we literally involved dozens of TUMC people. A few of us were up front and invisible, sharing our thoughts and gifts, but there were those who gave their time and their talents and we will always treasure their service! You know who you are, and I can personally say all of this happened because of YOU! Thank you again. We are forever grateful that you LISTENED to GOD’s calling.

We pray that as you turned in your pledge cards for 2020 you were moved to share your treasures with TUMC. When we watch what is happening in so much of the world, we again should be praising God that we are all so blessed. We challenge you to give above and beyond your time, talents, gifts, and yes, your treasures in the coming days, months and years. God will continue to bless you and provide all you need - just call on His Name, and place your trust in Him.

If you have not turned in a pledge card yet, please do so. It helps our finance committee plan our projects for the next year. We promise that your gifts will be used wisely for the Glory of God.

“THE TRUTH PROJECT®”

“Do you believe that what you believe is really real?” Dr. Del Tackett

Focus on the Family www.thetruthproject.org

What is Focus on the Family’s The Truth Project®?

In a 2003 study, the Barna Research Group revealed a stunning statistic that continues to reverberate throughout the evangelical world – only nine percent of professing

Christians have a biblical worldview. Because of this, today's believers live very similarly to non-believers. A personal sense of significance is rarely experienced, we spend our money and time on things that fail to satisfy, and we begin to wonder what life's ultimate purpose really is. We are, in short,

losing our bearings as a people and a nation.

To counter this downward slide within the body of Christ, Focus on the Family has launched one of the most ambitious and powerful projects in the history of our ministry

– Focus on the Family's The Truth Project®. The Truth Project® is a DVD-based small group curriculum comprised of 12 video

lessons (recommended to be viewed and discussed over 13 consecutive weeks) taught by Dr. Del Tackett, instructor of Christian Worldview at the Focus Leadership Institute and a former Senior Vice President of our ministry. This study is the starting point for looking at life from a biblical perspective. Each lesson discusses in great detail the

relevance and importance of living the Christian worldview in daily life.

We will be starting “The Truth Project®” on Sunday, October 13 at 6:00pm to 8:00pm in the “Well”. This small group will meet every Sunday for 13

weeks. The Truth Project curriculum is designed for small groups that are made up of 10-12 people. This size is intentional as it will help to foster personal relationships and allow for individual growth to occur within the framework of an authentic Christian

community. A sign up sheet will be available after worship in the Gathering Space. If you have questions please contact Ralph Boudreau ([email protected])
