Haus der Evangelischen Kirche, M1, 2 Mannheim The globalised world economy is full of examples of unjust division of labor, that make sure that natural resources of the southern hemisphere are processed in the north. Qualified workforce emigrates with the export of natural resources. Generally, the exploited regions are left with environmental pollution and poverty and the people who are directly expediting the resources and who are living in these regions are mostly affected. Their livelihoods will be destroyed by the mining of natural resources. The platinum industry is no exception. On the contrary, the massacre of Marikana in 2012 revealed the prevailing conditions of the mine, from which the German chemical company, BASF, is obtaining platinum for the production of catalysts. An alliance of South African and German organisations is urging BASF to fulfil their responsibility in the supply chain. Even five years after the massacre a delegation from South Africa will return to mobilize the public and to directly reach BASF's conscience at their shareholders meeting. This event wants to recall, that during the last 5 years Lonmin's and BASF's lip service has not done much in regards to the improvement of living and working conditions of the miners. At the same time it should draw attention to the fact that BASF made it to the headlines by avoiding to pay taxes. Supply chain irresponsibility and avoiding to pay taxes are two sides of the same coin, both are at the cost of the workers and the general public in South Africa and Germany.
