Barrister, Chartered Accountant and Tax Adviser
Keith has recently won the Tolley’s Taxation award 2019 for Outstanding Contribution to Tax.
This was an award that was voted by his fellow tax professionals from a very strong field which recognises his significant contribution to tax.

BiographyKeith practises from Temple Tax Chambers in London.
Keith previously practised as a chartered accountant and chartered tax adviser before starting to practise at the Bar in 2006. His practice covers all areas of tax as well as related areas including partnership disputes and professional negligence. Keith also lectures and writes extensively, and won the Outstanding Contribution to Tax award in the 2019 LexisNexis Taxation Awards. He was also the Tax Writer of the Year and Chartered Tax Adviser of the Year in the 2013 and 2009 awards respectively.
Keith’s cases include Jones v Garnett (the ‘Arctic Systems’ case) where he was the junior barrister for the successful taxpayer in the Court of Appeal and the House of Lords. More recently, he was instructed by the taxpayers in Albatel v HMRC (the ‘Lorraine Kelly’ case), the discovery cases of Charlton, Sanderson and Pattullo in the Supreme Court in Cotter v HMRC (meaning of tax return), Thomson v HMRC (meaning of trade) and the residence cases of Grace and Tuczka.
Keith is a member of the ICAEW Tax Faculty’s Technical Committee. He is also an active member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation, where he was a Council member between 2009 and 2019, sits on a number of technical sub-committees and is joint honorary President of the London Branch.

Julian Hickey
BiographyJulian Hickey is a Barrister at 9 Stone Buildings, Lincoln’s Inn, and an Associate Tenant at St. John’s Buildings in Manchester. He is a tax advisor (CTA (Fellow), TEP) and litigator. Since being called to the Bar in 1995, he has been a partner with major city solicitors’ practices, including Berwin Leighton Paisner and Bird & Bird. He has wide-ranging experience of tax investigations / disputes and advisory work covering Private Client, Corporate Tax, VAT, Stamp Duties, Customs Duties, APNs, Follower Notices. Julian’s non-tax related areas of practice are company, partnership, trusts and insolvency law; and advice on professional negligence (claims and defence). He regularly appears in the First-tier Tribunal, Upper Tribunal and High Court.

Mark’s aim is to focus audiences’ attention on what they need to do differently to succeed in the immediate future.
In a previous life, as a chartered accountant and chartered tax adviser, Mark spent 25 years in practice, was a partner at two top firms and Chairman of the ICAEW Tax Faculty.
Mark is now a proud Fellow of the Professional Speaking Association and Treasurer of The Magic Circle, which probably means he is the only truly magical speaker in the UK accountancy profession.

Martin Kaney
BiographyMartin has over 30 years of experience in VAT and is a former VAT Officer in HM Customs & Excise. His experience is extensive and with various professional firms. Martin is not only a specialist in VAT consultancy but also VAT litigation. He has expertise in all areas of the VAT and is the author of two textbooks on subject.

Michael Sherry
Michael Sherry is a Barrister at Temple Tax Chambers; tax advocate and adviser with experience in all courts including the House of Lords and Supreme Court (including Forde & McHugh; Gray’s Timber; College of Estate Management, Langham v Veltema, Mansworth v Jelley and Hancock v HMRC). He has particular experience with owner managed businesses (hedge fund managers, professional service providers and highly profitable closely held businesses); employment taxation for all sizes of business, tax avoidance and has experience in all areas of taxation.
He is a former member of the Bar Council and of the ICAEW Council, past Chairman of the Tax Faculty, former Treasurer of the ICAEW and is also past president of the Institute of Indirect Tax.
Michael has been general editor of Whiteman and Sherry on Income Tax and Whiteman and Sherry on Capital Gains Tax for many years and he lectures and writes widely.
