As co-founder of Taylorian Productions, I am honoured towelcome you to the Gaiety Theatre for a true classic – LionelBart's musical masterpiece, Oliver!
In this, its 50th anniversary on the London stage, the story needsno introduction. It has thrilled audiences for half a century andI’ve no doubt this production will do the same!
Following our highly acclaimed success of 'The King & I' 12months ago, we are delighted to once again welcome back ourresident director Mr. John Cumberlidge, his patience, enthusiasmand flair for the project is obvious throughout the whole of thiswonderful show.
This year’s exception has been working with 38 talented localchildren and from the outset they have been treated as 'youngprofessionals' and have responded accordingly.
That the company is able to present its fourth summer show andcontinues to bring much remembered theatrical entertainmentto the Manx public – the wish of the much-missed Patrick Taylor– is something which everyone associated with Taylorian isextremely proud of.
I would like to personally thank the director, cast, crew and members of the production company for theirconstant support all their hard work and commitment.
Finally, on behalf of Taylorian Productions, I thank YOU, the audience, for your continued support forwhat promises to be an uplifting theatrical experience.
Matthew James
Mr Patrick Taylor – our founder
'If only Mr T had seen that'. 'Wouldn't Patrick have loved it.'
Just two of the comments heard during rehearsals over the pastfew months.
More than two years after the passing of our co-founder, therespect and regard in which Patrick Taylor is held remainsunwavering.
‘Mr T’, as he was affectionately known, derived so much pleasurefrom his involvement in theatre, that it was infectious.
And that is certainly noticeable for many on and off-stage in thisproduction who were touched by his support and loyalfriendship.
No doubt during this run, 'Mr T’ will be looking down with anencouraging word, particularly for younger members of the castwho he loved to see thrive and progress.
Oliver! puts the sense of occasion back into going to the theatresomething Patrick Denton Taylor would fully endorse along withthe company which bears his name.

John Cumberlidge direction and choreography
Oliver!, the greatest of all British musicals, brings Johnback to the magnificent Gaiety Theatre for the summer of2010 with the exceptional Taylorian Productions.
John’s career began in Theatre, Television and Cabaret – inLondon and the Provinces, USA and Germany. West Endcredits are Underneath the Arches at the Prince of WalesTheatre, La Cage Aux Folles at the London Palladium andThe Wizard of Oz for the RSC at the Barbican and Stratford.
On Television Love Story, Parkinson, Halls of Fame with RoyHudd, A Night of 100 Stars, Royal Variety Shows, manyaward ceremonies and cabaret in the Talk of London revues.Provincial credits include My Fair Lady, Abracadaver withFrank Langella, The Boy Friend and many others.
As a Director and Choreographer, John has received criticalacclaim for his productions of Follies, Oliver!, Kiss Me Kate,
Kismet, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Scrooge-TheMusical, Jesus Christ Superstar, Back to the 80s, SweenyTodd, Mack & Mabel, My Fair Lady, The King & I, La CageAux Folles, We Will Rock You, Barnum, Hello Dolly, Jekyll &Hyde – The Musical and Me & My Girl – for which hereceived the Best Director Award at the First InternationalFestival of Musical Theatre.
He achieved great personal success and satisfactiontutoring the NODA musical performers’ courses at Warwickand Loughborough Universities, where he studied JesusChrist Superstar, Evita, West Side Story, Sunset Boulevardand Sweeney Todd.
John also specialises in period hair design and make-up. Hehas his own small company which styles and co-ordinatesvideo and television productions.
Director’s notes“Where is Love?” is probably the most profound line inOliver! the musical and a constant narrative in its epicstory and also a parallel that mirrors the life of England’sgreatest writer-Charles Dickens.
Lionel Bart’s magical adaptation of the Dickens classic hasbecome a theatrical phenomenon since it opened inLondon’s West End during a heat wave on June 30th 1960thus making this its 50th Anniversary year. It has given joyand fulfilment to audiences and performers alike the worldover and the months leading up to this huge production, inthe beautiful Gaiety Theatre, has been no exception.
From the original casting of 27 wonderful young men ascharacters in Fagin’s gang and workhouse, who give theproduction such an energy and vibrancy that only youthcan give, to the creation of characters that are sometimesdesperate, dark and macabre, and the understanding of thecast of all ages about bringing to life people who survivedin a society that, in early Victorian times, was rotten to thecore whilst existing with a disproportional Judicial systemwhere petty criminals were given sentences that wouldrival that of mass murderers. Child exploitation and abusewas conveniently over looked and life expectancy for thepoor in London around the mid 1850s was only 30 years ofage.
Once again, the dedication, talent and humility of theamazing cast, production team and crew of Taylorian
Productions has made this an extraordinary experience forme. Having been fortunate enough to work on severalCharles Dickens adapted musicals, it is always the stunningcharacters, incredible depth and integrity of the story thatsomehow grasps the cast and pulls them into theexperience, then along with months of drilling and thesheer slog of a long rehearsal period we get the end result. This is only achieved because of the passion of the A-Team(the brilliant assistants) – Matthew James, AssistantDirector – Julia Bratty & Kayleigh Parkinson, Dance Captainsand Liaison.
The huge sadness in all of this is that the Founder ofTaylorian Productions, Patrick Taylor, isn’t here to share andwitness the joy that the company he created, and iscontinued by Matthew James and James Davis, has given toall involved. How he would have loved to see theyoungsters in this production using their talent and time tosuch a positive end and what we hope will be a lifechanging experience – “Thank you Patrick!”
It was always said that Charles Dickens was a frustratedactor and a great theatregoer and welcomed thedramatisation of his stories. He took to the stage to giverecitals of his books, living out the life and deaths of hischaracters with a huge passion and gusto. Audiencesflocked to hear England’s best loved storyteller and, with 11film and television adaptations and translations into 22languages of Oliver alone, it appears that they still do!

Lionel Bart writer and composer
Lionel Bart (1 August 1930 – 3 April 1999) was a writer andcomposer of British pop music and musicals, best known forcreating the book, music and lyrics for Oliver!Oliver! (1960), based on Dickens’s Oliver Twist was a huge hitfrom the beginning, became the first British musical to transfersuccessfully to Broadway. It has sustained its popularity to thepresent day, and for many years was the standard musicalperformed by UK schools. The original stage production, whichstarred Ron Moody and Georgia Brown, contained such song hitsas “As Long As He Needs Me” and “Consider Yourself” and is alsonotable for featuring Australian satirist Barry Humphries in hisfirst major stage role as Mr Sowerberry and future rock starsSteve Marriott (later the lead singer of The Small Faces andHumble Pie) and Phil Collins (of Genesis fame) as The ArtfulDodger.
In 1968 Oliver! was made into a film starring Ron Moody, OliverReed and Shani Wallis which won several Oscars, including bestfilm. It is estimated that around this time Bart was earning 16pounds a minute from Oliver!
Bart’s next two musicals, Blitz! (1962) (the song Far Awayproduced another hit for Shirley Bassey) and Maggie May (1964),had respectable West End runs (Blitz!, at the time London’s mostexpensive musical ever, had a run of 568 performances; butTwang! (1965), a musical based on the Robin Hood legend, was anotorious flop and La Strada (1969), which opened on Broadwayin New York City, closed after only one performance. By this timeBart was drinking heavily, and this evidently affected both hiswork and his business judgement—he rashly used his personalfinances to try to rescue his last two productions, selling his past
and future rights to his work—including Oliver! — in order torealise capital to finance the shows; Bart himself later estimatedthat this action lost him over UK£1 million. By 1972, Bart wasbankrupt with debts of £73,000. He turned to drink, and atwenty-year period of depression and alcoholism ensued. Heeventually stopped drinking and attended Alcoholics Anonymous, although the years of substance abuse seriously damaged hishealth, leaving him with diabetes and impaired liver function.
Cameron Mackintosh, who owned half the rights to Oliver!,revived the musical at the London Palladium in 1994 in a versionrewritten by Lionel Bart. Mackintosh gave Lionel a share of theproduction royalties.
Oliver! has played in 22 different languages: Basque, Bulgarian,Czech, Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Faroese, Finnish, French, Frisian,German, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Icelandic, Italian, Japanese,Norwegian, Polish, Slovakian, Spanish & Swedish.
Artists who have appeared as Fagin include: Russ Abbott, JimDale, Roy Hudd, Barry Humphries, Robert Lindsay, Ron Moody,Jonathan Pryce, Rowan Atkinson, Omid Djalili & Griff Rhys Jones.
The name Artful Dodger is variously translated. In Hungarian it isPitkakynsi meaning light-fingered. In Swedish it is Raven meaningthe sly and cunning fox. In Hebrew it is Ha’Chamkan whichtranslates as Slippery Roger.
In Food Glorious Food the boys dream of cold jelly and custardbut in foreign translations of productions, some of the localdelicacies boys dream of a fresh fish (Finland), goulash soup andchestnut puree (Hungary), huge cakes and pork chops (Poland),meat pudding (Sweden), porkham (Japan).
