As co-founder of Taylorian Productions, I am honoured to

welcome you to the Gaiety Theatre for a timeless classic – Rodgers and Hammerstein’s endearing and enduring musical, “The King & I”.

The story of course needs no introduction. It has enchanted audiences for the last 50 years and I’ve no doubt this production will do the same!

Following our very successful production of “Me & My Girl” 12 months ago, we are delighted to welcome back our resident director Mr. John Cumberlidge.

His patience, enthusiasm and flair for the project is obvious throughout the whole of this wonderful show.

When Taylorian Productions was formed, “The King & I” was ‘the’ show the much-missed Patrick Taylor wanted us to perform above all others.

Now the company is able to carry out his wish and can continue to bring much memorable theatrical entertainment to the Manx public, with which everyone associated with Taylorian is extremely proud.

I would like to thank the cast; crew and members of the production company for their support this year and all their hard work and commitment.

Finally, on behalf of Taylorian Productions, I thank YOU, the audience, for your continued support for what promises to be a memorable theatrical experience.

Nearly 15 months after the passing of our co-founder, the respect and regard

in which Patrick Taylor is held remains unwavering.

‘Mr T’, as he was affectionately known, derived so much pleasure from his involvement in theatre, that it was infectious.

And that is certainly noticeable for many on and off-stage in this production who were touched by his support and loyal friendship.

The King & I was the one show he wanted to do.

From the outset, as discussions to form a production company unfolded and an extensive planning period was outlined, conversations with fellow co-founder Matthew James and director John Cumberlidge regularly returned to the possibility of staging this golden musical.

Now, in August 2009, the entire cast and crew of Taylorian Productions present this grandly sentimental yet unsyrupy classic in the knowledge ‘Mr T’ will be looking down with an encouraging word, particularly for younger members of the cast who he loved to see thrive and progress.

We dedicate the ‘King & I’ to Patrick Denton Taylor whose name will always remain alive with the company which bears his name.

Our Founder Mr Patrick Taylor

John Cumberlidge

Direction and Staging

The King & I gives John a chance to create one of the great ‘Golden Musicals’ of all time with the tremendous Taylorian Productions

company and a chance to fulfil a promise to the company’s founder and friend Patrick Taylor, that this show would be performed by his company on the stage of the beautiful Gaiety Theatre in 2009.

As a Director and Choreographer, John has received critical acclaim for his productions of Follies, Oliver!, Kiss Me Kate, Kismet, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Scrooge – The Musical, Jesus Christ Superstar, Back to the 80’s, Sweeney Todd, Mack & Mabel, My Fair Lady, The King and I, La Cage Aux Folles, We Will Rock You, Barnum and Me & My Girl – for which he received a Best Directors Award at the First International Festival of Musical Theatre.

He achieved great personal success and satisfaction tutoring the NODA musical performers’ courses at Warwick and Loughborough Universities, where he studied Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, West Side Story, Sunset Boulevard and Sweeney Todd.

John also specialises in period hair design and make-up. He has his own small company which styles and co-ordinates video and television productions.

John’s career began in Theatre, Television and Cabaret – in London, the Provinces, USA and Germany. West End credits are ‘Underneath the Arches’ at the Prince of Wales Theatre, ‘La Cage Aux Folles’ at the London Palladium and ’The Wizard of Oz’ for the RSC at the Barbican and Stratford.

On Television: Love Story, Parkinson, Halls of Fame with Roy Hudd, A Night of 100 Stars, Royal Variety Shows, many award ceremonies and cabaret in the Talk of London revues. Provincial credits include My Fair Lady, Abracadaver with Frank Langella, The Boy Friend and many others.

2009 has seen John working extensively in film and DVD productions, with exciting opportunities in 2010.

Director’s Notes

As King Phra Meha Mongut says at the conclusion of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s epic musical “many months, many months”,

that is probably the very best way to describe the journey that has been ‘The King & I’ 2009. The complexity of designing, directing and staging this very special musical has been an enormous challenge not only for me but for everyone involved.

My love affair with this dramatic and magical story began many years ago in my youth, but as a director it was in 2002 that the opportunity to create a new uncluttered and hopefully stylish production came my way. Along with my great friend and artistic interpreter, Colin Chesterton, the production was born.

Since working on the Isle of Man, I have tried several times to bring this production to the stage of the Gaiety Theatre, always without success. It was Patrick Taylor at the time of the Taylorian Productions’ conception that vowed it would happen and here we are, sadly without Patrick in person, but with us every step of the way on our journey. We all miss him so much and I know that he would be so moved and thrilled by this lavish production and the realisation that the summer productions at the Gaiety Theatre have continued.

This epic East meets West musical remains

a firm favourite with all generations, but of course with that comes expectation. It has always been the intention of this production to not only fulfil that promise but to introduce something new and fresh.

With a spectacular cast of accomplished performers and 30 wonderful young adults, along with the assistance of Matthew James and Julia Bratty, we have loved exploring many new avenues of this true story.

Set in 1862, its focus is on a truly pioneering woman, Anna Leonowens, who with her son lands in a civilisation with different values and a different culture. A widowed mother, perhaps desperate to work but a woman of great intellect and courage, probably a match for any king, but this king in particular is a radical man who struggles to choose between progress and tradition and finds himself thrust into a turbulent relationship with a stubborn but intelligent woman, who exercises her colonial superiority, creating an unmistakable electricity between them.

Add to this well acted, well carved other characters, a musical score of classic show stopping numbers, that all further the plot, and we have a magical world of Siam in the early 1860’s. So as the ornate doors of the stage set fly away, come into the world that we have been creating for “many months, many months”.

The King & I

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s 1951 musical was based upon the 1943 book ‘Anna and the King of Siam’ by Margaret Landon, which reconciled the two original accounts written by Anna Leonowens, who worked in Siam, as the English teacher of the royal children from 1862 to 1867. Anna and the King of

Siam is a popular and constant source of western curiosity, media adaptations and consequently of Thai distaste.

To date Thailand has discredited every true-to-life claim of Leonowens’ accounts and as a result has banned every film, movie, play and written version of the original account including Margaret Landon’s 1943 book.

The book is a chronological story of Leonowens’ life in Siam, and contains valuable descriptions of life in the Thai Royal Court including her personal understanding of Siamese slavery, which spurs continual adaptations. As with many film or musical adaptations of true stories, some artistic license is taken to help the flow of the story. As such, this can often mean there may be some historical inaccuracies.

Among the inaccuracies and deliberate insults perceived by many Thais is the insinuation of romantic attachment between King Mongkut and Anna in all of the seven adaptations, and the deliberate influence of Anna in Prince Chululongkorn’s education and belief system. Even Landon’s book suggests that Anna’s repugnance against slavery had influenced the Prince, who later as a King terminated Siamese slavery in 1905.

The original 1951 Broadway production opened at the St. James Theatre on March 29, 1951. It ran for 1,246 performances and won Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Actress, Best Featured Actor (for Yul Brynner, who was billed below the title and therefore considered featured instead of lead), Best Scenic Design and Best Costume Design. In 1985 Yul Brynner won a Special Tony Award honouring his staggering 4,525 performances in ‘The King & I’.

Possibly the most famous version of this musical was filmed by 20th Century Fox in 1956 with Yul Brynner recreating his role opposite Deborah Kerr. The film won 5 Academy Awards and was nominated for 4 more. Brynner won as Best Actor for his portrayal, and Kerr was nominated as Best Actress. The film also won the Oscar for Best Music.

The most recent adaptation of this story was a film released by 20th Century Fox in 1999 entitled Anna and the King, starring Jodie Foster and Chow Yun-Fat which was nominated for 2 Academy Awards and 2 Golden Globes.
