CHAYIMMEKORA Few Words

From the Rabbi...Passover: Asking the

Right QuestionsRabbi Paul David Kerbel

The Nobel prize-winning physicist, Isidore Rabi, once explainedhow he became a scientist. When he would come home fromschool, his mother did not ask him, “what did you learn today?”but rather, “Izzy, did you ask a good question today?”

To be a Jew is to ask questions. Our rabbinic tradition is basedon asking questions about a word or verse in the Torah, or debat-ing an aspect of law with pointed questioning. To be a Jew reallymeans that we are a religion that encourages us to struggle withour beliefs, to act on our passions, and to strive to understand ourrelationship with God and our tradition.

Where does this passion for questions come from? Ultimately,it may come from our celebration and observance of Passover. Inthe Book of Exodus, the Torah describes a number of situationswhere children may come and ask us (the parents) to explain Jew-ish ritual and customs to them. Based on these verses, the Hag-gadah presents to us “the four questions” and “the four children.”The central focus of the Passover Seder is to explain our traditionsand history by encouraging our children to participate by askingquestions.

The “Four Questions” is one of the most special moments of ourseder. For some of us, our children or grandchildren are recitingthem for the first time. In other homes, there may not be anyyoung children, and teenage or college students are often embar-rassed that they still have to recite the questions. tions that is so important. These questions were meant to be ex-amples of the types of questions we can ask at the seder. In fact, the Mishna, our first code of Jewish law (c. 200) states that ifchildren are too young to ask (spontaneous) questions, it is thefather who teaches (questions like) the four questions, which arenot really formulated as questions but as statements of wonder, encouraging the children to ask even more questions. The Talmudindicates that those at the seder can ask any question that stimu-lates discussion and allows us to act as free people.

So this year, I would like to assign to all of us a homework as-signment. I would like to encourage you to take some time toprepare carefully the spiritual side of your seder. What will youinclude and what will you leave out? Where can you linger for afew extra moments with questions and commentary? And Iwould especially like you to prepare in advance four additionalquestions that you would like to ask or to discuss after we recitethe traditional four questions. The haggadot of the secular, non-religious kibbutzim of the 1930s in pre-state Palestine give ussome examples: “Why do people all over the world hate theJews?” “When will there be peace and brotherhood the worldover?” Let’s go around the table. Let’s linger a bit. Let’s ask newquestions: questions about Passover, questions about the Exodus, questions about the Torah or Jewish tradition, questions aboutJewish survival and Jewish continuity, questions about TikkunOlam and the lessons we learn from the Passover experience.Like Isidore Rabi, let us ask “Did I ask a good question today?”Questioning is truly a sign of freedom and crucial to re-enactingthe Passover experience.

Melissa, Sam and Aliza, Judah and Eliana, Micha and I wishyou a meaningful and spiritual Passover!

President’s ReportBefore I get to what’s on all of our minds – the COVID-19 out-break – I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge what a terrificevent Trivia Night was, and also how festive all our Purim eventswere. Thanks to everyone involved, and special thanks to TriviaNight co-chairs Jessica Suckerman and Marc Bromberg, to EllieBarkin for organizing the Purim carnival, to Melanie Cantor fordirecting the Purim shpiel, and to Laura Cohen for organizingthe Megillah readings.

COVID-19 has disrupted so many aspects of our lives, and ourcommunal life at TBEMC is no exception. The need for socialdistancing has impacted our services, our educational programs, our social gatherings, and most dramatically, how we can grievethe loss of our loved ones and comfort those who lost loved ones.

The speed of events is also head-spinning. It seems like foreverago when the schools were open, we dined at restaurants, and didthe million other things that make up the fabric of our lives, butin truth it’s only been a couple of weeks. So despite the graciousextension from your Bulletin Editor Debbie Kaplan, whatever Iam writing now in March is likely out of date when this goes topress in April.

At the same time, I am amazed and inspired by our commu-nity’s resilience. Rabbi Kerbel is hosting classes and servicesthrough Zoom videoconference. Principal Doni Remba, ourteachers, and Education Committee have quickly and success-fully transitioned our religious school to online and remote learn-ing. Judy and David Kupferberg, through our We Carecommittee, are coordinating volunteers to reach out to those inour community most in need of a personal connection. Our ad-ministrator Susan King, our custodial staff, and Marty Metzgerand our House committee is keeping our office and building op-erational. And we are all staying connected through video, phone, emails, and Facebook.

During this time, I encourage everyone to stay connected:

If you would like a phone call from one of our We Carevolunteers, or would like to do a mitzvah and help makecalls to support We Care, please contact Judy and DaveKupferberg at 908-272-7691 or [email protected].

Join the Chevra e-mail list. Unlike the announcements e-mail list, which goes to all members and only a few people can post, the chevra list is opt-in and anyone cansend messages. To opt-in, e-mail Art Werschulzat [email protected].

WHAT DOES TBEMC MEAN TO YOU?

Hard as this is to believe, one third of this calendar year has al-ready passed. Here at TBEMC, we are always planning for thefuture, but with the uncertainty of the coronavirus outbreak, there is reason to step back and appreciate those things thatare really important. This situation has greatly curtailed socialcontact in an effort to prevent rapid spread of this virus. Notbeing able to gather has affected us in different ways. We areall used to meeting with our friends for social and religious rea-sons, and being deprived of that has saddened us. COMMU-NITY IS IMPORTANT. Imagine if we fail to plan for the long-termfuture of the shul by not leaving Legacy gifts! Those gifts haveclearly impacted the shul this past year, for gifts left by de-parted congregants have helped bridge the gap between in-come and expenses, and allowed us to continue to provideservices that our community needs.

So, now more than ever is the time to join our Legacy Circleby committing to a future gift to TBEMC. It is also time forthose members of the Legacy Circle to review their previousgifts, and see if they are willing to commit more. Legacy givingenables such our broad range of activities to continue. We wantyou to become part of our Legacy Circle now. Keep Judaismand TBEMC alive now! Becoming a Legacy Circle member ispainless and making a legacy gift does not take current dollarsaway from your personal needs now, and it will not signifi-cantly impact your legacy giving to your family down the road.Your commitment is a FUTURE gift. Our gifts range from $1,800to $100,000 and each one matters, no matter what size! CallDavid Springer at 908-370-1890 or Laura Cohen at 908-389-1744to join our Legacy Circle, or fill out the commitment form lo-cated in this Bulletin or online. Help assure that TBEMC willcontinue to be here for the next generation and beyond. Wecan’t wait to hear from you!

Donor-Advised Fund As TBEMC members start your year-end charitable and tax planning, theJewish Community Foundation of Greater MetroWest announced its newDonor-Advised Fund Synagogue Incentive Initiative.

How does this benefit your synagogue? When a member of your synagogue opens a donor-advised fund (DAF)with the Jewish Community Foundation (JCF), your synagogue will receive a $100 donation in their honor. (Your synagogue must be inGreater MetroWest NJ to participate. This opportunity is availablethrough December 31, 2020.) Congregants set aside charitable funds thatare available immediately. Congregants can pay for synagogue member-ship and High Holiday tickets (if applicable) from a DAF.

What is a donor advised-fund?A DAF is a flexible way for your members to give to their favorite chari-ties, including your synagogue. It simplifies their charitable giving andmaximizes tax savings. They can make donations of appreciated assets.

Why choose JCF?JCF’s very competitive, all-in fees are reinvested in the community andsupport our work. In 2019, over 80% of JCF’s grants stayed in the Jewishcommunity. Thousands of dedicated volunteershave contributed to the spiritual, esthetic and material well being ofthese educational communities by supporting Torah Fund projects.

The 5780 (2019-2020) Torah Fund pin depicts a heart surroundedby three circles, one larger than the next. This symbolizes the heartof kindness, which Jews enact in ever-widening realms of generosity:from family, to community, to the larger world; from North America,to Israel, to the world; or from sisterhood, to region, to the largerworld of Women’s League for Conservative Judaism. And as it is saidin Psalm 89, may we build a world of kindness.
