Welcome

Dear Reader,

I am delighted to present you the latest edition of our Marriott News Magazine. Personally I was very pleased to hear the praise we received from our loyal readers and it encouraged us to make even more interesting, informative and enjoyable publication.

In this issue we would like to continue updating you with the most important highlights and events of the season taking place in Tbilisi Marriott and Courtyard by Marriott Tbilisi hotels. Apart from the information about our guests you will get a chance to read some very interesting articles on Svaneti, the gorgeous part of Georgia. You can also get familiar with the latest fashion trends. As always Tbilisi Marriott Hotel and Courtyard by Marriott Tbilisi were in the center of the events. We had a great honor of hosting the world-famous composer Michelle Legrand, Georgian well-known ballet dancer Irma Nioradze and many other eye-catching news.

Our appreciation goes to everyone who contributed to this edition and issuing our new eddition, and all those very famous companies who operate in Georgia and bring their business to us.

Again we are continuing Marriott Quiz program with some great prizes for winners.

I would like to express my deep gratitude towards our associates who really make difference at our hotels and on behalf of whole Marriott team, once again, I thank our business partners, corporate accounts and valued guests for their loyalty and support.

Respectfully Yours,

GMT Group GMT Group is one of the leading private sector investors in Georgia, with around US$200 million in capital invested across 5 portfolio companies in several industries. GMT was founded in 1998 to capitalize on emerging investment opportunities in Georgia and on increasing investor interest in the region. Serving as the link between the local opportunities and foreign investors, GMT has assembled an elite group of western educated and trained Georgians to source, structure, and operate the most attractive business propositions available. The combination of local perspective and western business ethic has been infused with a commitment to excellence and principle. GMT Group combines indigenous knowledge of Georgia with western training and support to produce attractive financial results without compromising its own principles and values.

Rustaveli # 7Among various real estate properties, GMT owns and has been developing the site, a land plot of 5,000 square meters, at central, Rustaveli Avenue located within the government, cultural, historical and business center of the city. Located in front of the Parliament building, this location is one of the best locations in Georgia available for the development.

The Company is developing a multifunctional building of approximately 42,000 square meters, a com-bination of high standard office, retail, Hotel, Luxury apartments, F&B and art-related space, a perfect confluence of business and cultural centers.

The financial partners of GMT Real Estate in this project are private US investor, Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) and City Group.

The building is intended to become one of the city’s landmarks, representing a link between the ar-chitecture of the historic old city and a new and prestigious quality of architecture, as well as being a symbol for the modern development of the city and of the country for the 21st century. GMT’s vision also involves achieving a new standard of quality with this building which will be unique in Georgia to date.

In order to realise the above goals, GMT held an international competition in which Fritsch + Tschaidse Architekten emerged in first place.

The starting point and aim of the concept of Fritsch + Tschaidse Architekten was to design a building that would become a symbol for the democratic reorganisation of a free Georgia. Old structures that have been imposed upon the people of Georgia in their past history have been left behind to achieve a symbiosis between traditional values and a reorientation of society.

The building forms a new landmark on Rustaveli Avenue and in the context of the old town of Tbilisi. It reflects the atmosphere of departure and movement, and therewith a keynote of the local society corresponding to the old and new ideals of the Georgian people. The development leaves behind the familiar forms, rules and organising principles of the neoclassical architecture of the past 200 years. It is free of the orthogonality and rectilinearity of the surrounding buildings. It opens up to the outside – destructive, but also intermediary – and creates axes leading towards the park, the church, the surrounding streets and the new museum street. These ways meet in the core of the building – a funnel-shaped courtyard broadening to the top. The resulting system of connected paths and views symbolises the opening up and the democratic attitude of the Georgian people, of their thoughts and hearts.

GMT ProjectsGMT is the owner and developer of a lux-ury hotel in downtown Tbilisi operated by Marriott, of another hotel for business and leisure travelers operated under the brand name of Courtyard by Marriott, a first class A office premises in downtown Tbilisi and the owner of the largest manufacturer of dairy products and juices in Georgia. GMT also owns the site across the Parliament of Georgia on the city’s main avenue and a former restaurant landmark building over-looking Tbilisi from mount Mtatsminda.

Brief Company History and Activity

Mtatsminda PlateauGeorgia’s capital Tbilisi lies in the centre of eastern Georgia, in the foothills of the Mtatsminda Mountain. The Mtatsminda Mountain is a symbol of Tbilisi, with the church of Father David, pantheon of most famous writers and public figures, and a fu-nicular on its slope, which was constructed in 1905. Later, in the late thirties, namely in 1938-1939, the restaurant was built over the upper station of the funicular, which immediately became a major city attraction and landmark and since then had been the most favorable place for locals and the guests of the city, com-bining finest dining facility with family leisure and vacation hub.

In the beginning of the 1990th the building got deteriorated and currently only the main structure remains. The currently disused building is in fairly dilapidated conditions covering an area of ap-proximately 7,000 square metres. In 1936 the existing three-sto-rey building was constructed to replace the old upper station of the 500-metre long funicular railway, located at an altitude of 720 metres above sea level. The structure has become the symbol of Tbilisi. The terrace of the building provides a nice view over the conurbation of Tbilisi and the building itself is visible from almost everywhere in the city. Surrounded by the 60 hectares of Mtatsminda Park, the property is considered to be a major historical and architectural landmark of Tbilisi. During the years it became necessary subconscious attribute of the city, firmly fix-ing the building image with the overall city image of Tbilisi. It used to function as a favourite place for locals and tourists, providing a unique combination of fine dining and family enter-tainment facilities.GMT Group envisages development of the property into a “des-tination attraction” able to appeal to the widest possible range domestic markets and a tourist attraction for the visitors by rede-velopment of the premises as a range of F&B outlets, function, banqueting, conferencing and other

Michelle legRand••••••••

One cold November day a plainly dressed and very ordinarily looking man unnoticeably enters the conference hall of the Tbilisi Marriott Hotel, sits down at a table and, not waiting for an interpreter, greets journalists in French. This is Michelle Legrand – the living legend, the composer of famous melo-dies heard in over 200 movies, the win-ner of three Oscars, five Grammies and twelve Golden Globes. The Georgian media present at the press conference cannot hide its admiration and reacts to the maestro’s simple “Bonjour” with an excited applause as if listening to his famous film music.

Michelle Legrand first visited Georgia twelve years ago. A dozen years later he gladly accepted another invitation by Geor-gians and did not hesitate when making his decision to come to Tbilisi. The maestro visited Georgia for just a couple of days yet managed to do quite a bit: meetings with the Catholicos-Patriarch, the “first persons” of the country and journalists, a concert at the Opera and Ballet Theatre and, of course, exposure to the Georgian table, with its drinking and dancing.

Monsieur Legrand was invited to Tbilisi within the framework of the project “Art-ists for Artists”. Within the same project the maestro gave an unforgettable concert to the Georgian listener and stayed two days longer than originally planned. He attended a concert by the Sukhishvili National Ballet and almost danced with admiration in the opera box.

Before this, Legrand’s immortal music played in the Opera and Ballet Theatre – a concert that was much anticipated in Tbili-si. The symphony orchestra headed by Nika Memanishvili trained actively before the maestro’s arrival. As a result, the audience enjoyed a wonderful concert with maestro Legrand starring.

Michelle Legrand – composer-symphonist, conductor and the author of lyrical melodies. He established his own orchestra at the age of 20 and produced his first bestselling al-bum titled “I Love Paris”. At different times he has worked together with Barbara Stre-isand, Frank Sinatra, Liza Minelli, Maurice Chevalier and other famous performers. In the 1950s he wrote music for numerous

Hollywood films, however real popularity came to him for the melodies he created for Jacques Demy’s films “The Umbrel-las of Cherbourg” and “The Young Girls of Rochefort”.

At the press conference held in the Tbilisi Marriott Hotel the maestro admitted that despite his age (he has turned 76) he feels cheerful and writes music everywhere whether travel-

ling in a train or staying in a hotel. He never lives with the past, does not keep old discs at home and is always optimistic. He considers that the artist should always be sincere.

“I write music for the heart,” Legrand stated in one of his inter-views. While in Tbilisi he said that the emotions he received in Georgia will be reflected in his work: - I spent an unforgettable evening with Georgia’s Catholicos-Patriarch who is a real artist. He creates won-derful music and I am happy that I had an opportunity to listen to it. This meeting may become a source of in-spiration for me.

- You travel a lot and like living in different countries. What made you decide to visit a country that had just gone through a war?- When you are an artist and when you make a choice between hap-piness and misery, you, of course, choose happiness. The reason I came to Tbilisi was to comfort the Georgian people and ease its pain. I want them to listen to the works I have written in the past to which everyone loves to listen.

- What will you say about your favorite note?- This note is “sharp-fa”, which I have invented. No matter what score you listen to, if you hear a sharp-fa there, you will know that it is mine. But I am a very generous person and I give this note to everyone…

…As happens all the time with him, at the end of the concert people gath-ered in the concert hall stood up and refused to part with Legrand for a long time, Legrand who, surrounded with dear ones and family, cared for three loyal friends most of all – si-lence filled with music, solitude and a grand piano.

The life on poinTesThe two lives of Irma Nioradze and the Roman holidays

People in Petersburg call the prima ballet dancer of the Marine Ballet troupe Irma Nioradze “The Georgian Magician”. From the very be-ginning everyone knew she would be a success as it was clear that the Georgian dancer possessed all the essential qualities of a classic bal-let dancer. Even today her talent is much discussed. Irma Nioradze’s performance technique is flawless, her every move is virtuosic and expressive, she is a wonderful soloist and partner fitting wonderfully into classic as well as romantic and dramatic roles. Her rich reper-toire, which includes “Giselle”, “Don Quixote”, “Sleeping Beauty, “Carmen Suite”, “Goya”, and “Rimonda” is testament to this…

Irma Nioradze, the winner of numerous awards and prizes, visited the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theatre in December. At the “Artists for Artists” festival blessed by the Georgian Patriarch the prima ballerina together with her partner Mikhail Labukhin gave the Georgian audience a wonderful evening. Nioradze plans to give a charity concert in Georgia in June.

We offer you an exclusive interview with the ballet dancer:

- Ms. Irma, how important was the last year for you and what are the projects in which you plan to participate in future?- Last year I performed the role of Medora in the play “Corsair” staged at the Opera and Ballet Theatre. I have danced this part since 1993 (by the way, this was the first part I danced in the Ma-rine Theatre). As for the Roman play, I found the process of work-ing on it – which lasted two months – to be very interesting. My partners in this play were dancers from the French Grand Opera and the New York Metropolitan Opera.I have cooperated with the Theatre of Rome for four years already. This is the kind of “Roman Holiday” that I have, although I don’t get to rest that much as I have a busy schedule spending all my days in the ballet hall. Despite this Rome is like a renewed life for me. I love this city and I love Italians!

This year I am also invited to Italy. This time I will dance in three different productions, two of which I know well: “Firebird” and “Scheherazade”. The third is “Cleopatra” which will be staged in April. The shooting of a two-series film called “The Rain Season” in which I play, is nearing the end. It will be shown in September.

- You always stress that you were lucky to have such teachers as Nino Didebulidze, Serapima Vekua, the legendary Vakhtang Chabukiani, Vera Tsignadze, Ludmila Sapronova… Have you thought of a pedagogical career yourself? - Not yet but I have great experience in this regard and I often give classes in the theatre at the request of artists. My artistic world is entirely linked with my amazing private tutors Olga Moiseeva and Nineli Kurgapkina. I always try to take their remarks into consid-eration.

- Which was the part that was the most difficult for you to dance technically and which was the most high profile perfor-mance?- The most high profile performance was “Don Quixote”. I had very little time to prepare for it… As for technical difficulties, I have never thought about them because in the art of ballet you strive for perfection on a daily basis to keep your classical shape. This is difficult work both physically and mentally.

-How much does a classical play allow for improvisation and how do you feel about modern ballet?-In classic ballet improvisation is virtually ruled out. Sometimes you can make small changes and diversions based on the individu-ality of the dancer and through a deepening of the dramatic text. As for modern dance, I like it as much as I like classical. Through it the ballet dancer grows professionally.

-Are the audiences of Tbilisi and Pe-tersburg similar in terms of emo-tions?-No, they are not but both are charming and pleasant in their own ways. Tbilisi audience expresses its emotions in a more reserved way and I carry this response in my heart for a long time. The audience in Petersburg also likes my performance a lot and awaits me in the street after the play to share their im-pressions with me… I always note that being a ballet dancer is a very difficult profession. In order to win the sympathy of the audience you need to have knowledge. Knowl-edge is what gives you confidence and bravery. - What is the role that has given you the greatest plea-sure and satisfac-tion? - Playing the part of the queen in “The Legend of Love” has given me an unfor- gettable emotion. When I perform that part I sing along with the mu-sic… This is truly pleasant.

- Despite her busy schedule how does the prima ballet dancer rest?- Last time I had a holiday in Italy. My husband often skied together with our son. I also like skiing a lot but unfortunately cannot ski. In order to keep in physical shape I ex-ercised in the hotel and then our entire family swam in a swim-ming pool. I always try to balance rest and work.

- Tell us about your family. You are the ballet dancer who de-cided to become a mom at the zenith of her career and then returned to the big ballet stage… - All my five sisters serve different fields of art. When I visit Geor-

gia for a concert the moment I meet my mom and sisters is always very special to me… The birth of my child has changed every-thing in my life. As if the world split in two – one associated with the solitude on stage and in life and the other – associated with a constant joy the major reason of which is my child.

In short, as I have often mentioned I have two lives – the ballet life and the real life. Both of them are very interesting and diverse.

Tbilisi audience expresses its emotions in a more reserved way and I carry this response in my heart for a long time. The audience in Petersburg also likes my performance a lot and awaits me in the street after the play to share their impressions with me…

I have cooperated with the Theatre of Rome for four years already. This is the kind of “Roman Holiday” that I have, although I don’t get to rest that much as I have a busy schedule spending all my days in the ballet hall. is troubled by his debtors. Levan has never seen his wife-to-be. Mar-rying his daughter to a nobleman will give Makar the status of nobil-ity – something he desires and skillfully uses his daughter to try to achieve. Makar’s beautiful daughter Keto, however, is in love with a young man, Kote. The latter requests the help of another match-maker Khanuma to marry his love. Khanuma dresses as a bride and appears in front of the guests flirting and twisting. The nobleman

Levan is insulted upon seeing the ugly bride. Kote and Keto use the confusion created among the guests to go to a church to marry. Everything ends with their wedding. Many famous actors of the time star in the film: the beautiful Medea Ja-paridze plays the role of Keto, Batu Kraveish-

vili stars as Kote and other roles are played by Tamar

Chavchavadze, Petre Amiranash-

vili, Shalva Ghambashidze, Vaso Godziashvili, Giorgi Shavgulidze, Veriko Anja-

paridze, Sesilia Takaishvili, Sergo Zakariadze and others. Even Nato Vach-

nadze expressed a wish to be in the movie and she indeed flashes for a second during one of the dances…

American success and an amazed western press In 1948 “Keto and Kote” was shown in Georgia

just a couple of times. Its first USSR-wide screen-ing took place only after Stalin’s death in 1953. According to the documentary film “The House of Joy”, the great leader did not see the film or,

more correctly, the film was kept away from him as it was feared that if he disliked the picture it would

never see daylight.

This is how this classic example of Georgian cin-ematography has survived with its amaz-ing music, dancing, singing, actors and

Old Tbilisi spirit. “Keto and Kote” was not only the first Georgian musical that was put into distribution in the

USA but also the first Georgian film that received a well-deserved positive evaluation in the Western press… Ever since the story of Khanuma was staged by about 90 theatres and operas. In 1997 Georgian cinematographers named “Keto and Kote” as the best film.

“The House of Joy” to immortalize the cinema legend

It is a fact that the love story of Keto and Kote has not lost its topicality and bril-liance. The romances by composer Gia Kancheli from the musical are still sung today. Many foreign travelers mesmer-ized by Georgia have called Tbilisi “the house of joy”… Yes, this is truly so! – The director of “The House of Joy” Mer-ab Kokochashvili responds and speaks about the yet unrevealed details of the shooting process of “Keto and Kote”. There are a plenty of unique photo ma-terials, sketches, recollections, and post-ers used in the film. The documentary material also includes the shooting crew. The guide to “The House of Joy” is the famous Georgian actor Revaz Chkhik-

“…This history is as winding as the streets of Tbilisi and in order to understand it well, you should first know a completely different story. And in order to understand this other story, you must delve into yet another story,” says writer Aka Morchiladze, the author of the script “The House of Joy”.

“The House of Joy” is the name of the documentary-feature film about the first Georgian musical “Keto and Kote” shot by Merab Kokochashvili. The documentary shots of the film depict not only the history of the creation of this unique musical and the cheerful Georgian character but also the tolerance and traditions that we contemporaries call a “national value”.“The House of Joy” is a film about the film that once again revives Old Tbilisi with its unique charm and past left in the memory of genera-tions. This is a film about the musical that turned 60 years old and that is recog-nized as the reigning masterpiece of Georgian cinematography.

The musical was made at Stalin’s request

The first Georgian musical “Keto and Kote”, produced in 1947, is one of the masterpieces that the new generation managed to rescue. However, in the years after World War II the shooting crew could hardly imagine that their film would become legendary. Especially since the director of the film, Vakhtang Tabliash-vili, had dreamed of a completely different film. He wanted to create a film about the poet Nikoloz Baratashvili in which Old Tbilisi would be shown with all its charm… But one incident changed not only the director’s plans but the entire history of the develop-ment of Georgian cinematogra-phy: Stalin decided that the Soviet Union had seen enough blood spilled and it was time for entertainment.

A document signed by Stalin has

been preserved where he demands that “Keto

and Kote” be produced…

After such a decree the director Vakhtang Tabliashvili had no other

choice than to summon Shalva Gedevan-ishvili who had worked in France as his assistant and to start filming.

A script written in Ilia Chavchavadze’s house

The script for “Keto and Kote” was written in Ilia Chavchavadze’s house in Saguramo and initially looked simple and comical: the rich merchant Makar decides to marry his daughter to a nobleman and sends a match-maker to the nobleman Levan who

vadze. He is the narrator and the actor who leads us into the labyrinths of “Keto and Kote” joking all the way…

According to cinema critics, the documentary-feature film turned out to be as joyful as “Keto and Kote” itself. The presentation of the film was held in the Tbilisi Mar-riott Hotel.

The director Merab Kokochashvili told us how the work on the film proceeded: - The House of Joy” was produced by the cinema studio “Independent Cinema Project”. The main goal was to re-store and save the unique national cinema masterpiece. It is a great wish of our producer Archil Gelovani to digi-talize our old cinema so that it becomes available to the entire world. The idea of making a film about “Keto and Kote” belongs to Mr. Archil.

-It is known that there are many interesting stories about “Keto and Kote”… -The thing is that the original copies of all Georgian films produced in the times of the Soviet Union are kept in Russia. According to Russian law, they have the status of museum exhibits. We do not have the right to take them away from the territory of Russia. As for the origi-nal copy of “Keto and Kote”, Archil Gelovani found it in a deplorable condition. Currently its restoration process is nearing the end.

Merab Kokochashvili’s film “The House of Joy” has already been purchased by the Russian side and it will be shown in Russia on several channels. The film has also been sold in Ukraine, Israel, Poland and Belarus. The film has Georgian, Russian and English language versions.

Merab Kokochashvili: It seems that on the demand of the Soviet authorities the musical “Keto and Kote” was filmed in two originals – Georgian and Russian. The Russian script was changed many times. For example, the moment of the church wedding ceremony was cut out of the final part of the film. The Georgian songs translated word by word sounded very funny. Besides, the advertisement for “Keto and Kote” filmed on special color film brought from Germany was very interesting. This was the first time in the Georgian cinema industry that something was shot in color.

-In your film we meet those legendary actors who played in “Keto and Kote”. Was it easy to get them involved in the new film?-It was our wish to bring together the special people of Tbilisi from old as well as new generations – Otar Ko-beridze, Giuli Chokhonelidze, Zurab Lezhava, Ekater-ine Makhateli and others… All who were healthy readily agreed to take part in the film. The team I worked with on the film greatly influenced the final cut of the film … What is also very important is that Tbilisi with its culture and traditions does not change that fast and whatever you see in the film still exists and is alive today!

Professional Secrets of Sous Chef of Courtyard Freedom Brasserie

- How did your story as a Sous Chef begin?- I never thought of this profession. At the age of 22 I went to England, where I started my career as a chef. I planned to stay there for three months in order to improve my English. My friend was working in a small restaurant and offered me an opportunity to try myself in this field. I tried my luck and in a while found myself working at a bigger spot, quite successfully. Then I met my wife (Georgian) and in a couple of years moved to Tbilisi, where I have been working as a Sous Chef of Courtyard by Marriott Restaurant for two years now, I must say I enjoy it.

- What is your favorite ingredient? The one you like to work with the best?- I do enjoy cooking with herbs a lot, but it is hard to name one specific ingredient.

- What do you look for in a dish?- Like most chefs, presentation and taste.

- Like most chefs, you probably experiment a lot too.- It is essential for a chef to do so, especially in Georgia. One of the main concerns in this country is the lack of desirable ingredients. We can’t get them all, so we have to create with what is available and still manage to create the right receipt. I tend to experiment a lot in our monthly promotions. I start working on a new

dish, experiment for the first two-three times and by the fourth time I already know how to serve it to guests tasty and presentable.

We follow the “Cook Smart” principle, a training offered by Marriott.

French Sous Chef of the Courtyard Freedom Brasserie, Francois Jolive always knows how to keep customers treated with various arts of cookery. Herbal ingredients, delicious meals, high class service and exquisite look – it takes him only 20 minutes to combine all these features and create a gastronomic masterpiece that will keep you visiting the restaurant over and over again. He is always concerned about customers’ wishes, constantly renovates the menu, experiments with dishes and keeps professional secrets, some of which he decided to share with us.

-What is your food philosophy?- I attended cooking course in Germany, and I definitely agree on the food philosophy anticipated there: keep it simple. I try to keep it simple and quick, that is, serve a dish in less than 20 minutes. To achieve this, you have to keep some standards, which include touching a plate only three or four times maximum; for example, put meat, vegetables around it and sauce – what comes out is a fine tasting a looking meal in three simple taps.

- Do you interact with clients? - I try to spend as much time as possible in the restaurant, to speak with the guests and know exactly what their expectations are. Then I change the menu and adapt it to the researched demands.

-What’s the main novelty at your restaurant?-Courtyard Marriott, as well as Tbilisi Marriott has monthly promotions, a change from the ordinary menu. This month, we’re having Sandwich Promotions; next month is a Spring Menu Promotion, if I am not mistaken. We also have special events for Valentine’s Day, Mothers’ Day and other special occasions. On top of this, we change soups and main course specials daily for our long standing guests.

- The tendency of weight watching is growing in Georgia. How suitable is the food at your restaurant for these “low calorie” foodies?- Not really to be honest. But we plan to adapt it in our renovated menu pretty soon. However at this point we do have vegetarian burgers and pizzas, as well as salads that weight watchers can enjoy.

- What do you think of Georgian cuisine and what would you change in it?- Georgians have very nice family food, with big, sharing dishes. The taste is very nice. I love Khinkali, it’s my favorite. Like I said, it’s a family food, so presentation is not very nice to be honest, but you can always make a combination with Georgian and European food in order to improve the presentation.

- What is the most “intense” part of your job?- I keep remembering an unbelievable rush I had to deal with in England. Working in 120 seat restaurant, it would get so crazy at times, You’re cooking several dishes at the same time and checks keep coming in and you start thinking, “how am I going to get out of this?” But you always do! So the rush is the most intense feature of this profession, but it’s also what I enjoy the most.

- If you hadn’t become a chef, what would you be? - I like to draw a lot, so maybe I would be an artist. I still draw a lot and I plan to have an exhibition of my own.

Herbal ingredients, delicious meals, high class service and exquisite look – it takes him only 20 minutes to

combine all these features and create a gastronomic masterpiece that will keep you visiting the restaurant

over and over again

i aM happy ThaT i have svaneTiSvaneti is a beautiful place not only in Georgia, but the entire Caucasus. Its villages, snow covered peaks, and medieval towers overlooking valleys are just amazing. Visiting Georgia and not going to Svaneti means not seeing Georgia. Svaneti is a natural gift for hikers. At the same time it is an ancient birthplace of Georgian culture and here you will meet plenty of medieval monuments and churches.

Georgia’s highest mountainous region, Svaneti, was part of the Kingdom of Kolkheti and was located in the valleys of rivers Enguri and Tskhenistskali. Today Svaneti is divided in two parts: Upper and Lower Svaneti. Upper Svaneti is located in the Enguri Valley and its villages are listed on the UNESCO Cultural Heritage list. Lower Svaneti is located in the Tskhenistskali Valley. From the north it is surrounded by about twenty mountain ranges in the Caucasus which go into Russia.

Svaneti is distinguished for its unique scenery with some of the highest peaks of the Caucasus: Shkhara (5068 m.), Jangha (5060 m.), Gestola (4860 m.), Tetnuldi (4860 m.), Tsurangala (4220 m.), Ailama (4220 m.)…

In the villages of Svaneti you will meet unique 12th

-16th century stone towers. Polyphonic Svanetian songs and chants make this unique place even more peculiar. Local meals amaze visitors.

Bidzina Gujabidze, the famous Georgian alpinist, tells about this picturesque spot and favorite tourist destination:

“Svaneti is an oasis of adventurous, ethno-cultural and mountain tourism. I first happened to visit Lower Svaneti in 1980. I went to Upper Svaneti only four years later. Despite the fact that I have been to nearly all the mountainous places of the world nowhere else have I seen such beauty. By the way, the first Georgian mountain climbers were from Svaneti. Even today local Svans are very emotional about the achievements and failures of any alpinist. The favorite topic of conversation with the local men is alpinism. They discuss different climbing routes, the readiness of climbers, etc. Their women light candles, bake religious pastries and meet those who return from the mountains with great fanfare.

“Anyone visiting mountains is a welcome guest for locals. That is why it is insulting for Svans if you refuse to be their guest. In general this place is famous for its hospitality. Svans are distinguished, proud people. Externally they look very strict and unsociable but in fact are honest and kindhearted as children. One part of the history of Svaneti is its music folklore. Svanetian songs are mostly dedicated to war heroes and famous kings. Many of their songs also include pagan elements.

“I love Svaneti very much and I raised my children

there. We lived in forests and at the foot of mountains. Let alone the scenery, the village life, towers, the location of villages here are all unique. Svans are hard working people and what is important, they can work beautifully – mow, work on the ground, breed bees. When you are in Svaneti you naturally acquire a wish to get involved in this wonderful process.

“I have seen so many mountains but nothing can compare with Ushba and the fantastic gorges of Svaneti. The first mountain in Georgia for me is this very Ushba where there are about 40 routes of climbing. I would probably need all my life to climb them all. I have been on 17 climbing routes on Ushba and 8 of them ended in failure. Ushba is a very beautiful, difficult and popular mountain among climbers. I have many renowned alpinist friends who want to climb Ushba and even more they consider conquering it a moral obligation.

“I have heard from many climbers that there is a strange, attractive warmness coming from the Svanetian mountains. On several occasions while being close to Svaneti I have turned aside and went to this place via the Becho Mountain Range and then returned via the same path. I am happy that I have Svaneti.”
