Textbook of Traumatic Brain Injury ReleasedResearch Raises TBI Awareness, Reduces Stigma for Soldiers, Athletes

ARL INGTON, Va. (March 7, 2011) Every year in the United States, more than 3 million peoplesustain atraumatic brain injury, costing society more than $48 billion. A newly revised textbook fromAmerican Psychiatric Publishing, Inc. addresses the needs of medical professionals including the fullrange of mental health professionals who care for people who suffer from TBI as well as their lovedones.

Textbook of Traumatic Brain Injury, Second Edition, edited by Jonathan M. Silver, M.D., Thomas W.McAllister, M.D., and Stuart C. Yudofsky, M.D., is available as a print textbook and electronically athttp://www.PsychiatryOnline.com.

As soldiers and combat veterans have returned from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, traumatic braininjury has been identified as the signature injury of those wars. And, last month, the American Journalof Sports Medicine reported the rising number of concussions reported among high school athletes,

especially football players, who are currently four times more likely to be identified as sufferingconcussions than they were 10 years ago. March marks Brain Injury Awareness Month, an appropriatetime to highlight the cognitive, emotional, and behavioral consequences of TBI, including depression, dementia, and even suicide.

Returning wounded soldiers with TBI or depression and how they function in the years after theirwartime service is one focus of this textbook, explains Dr. Silver. Another chapter addresses sports-related head injuries and how football players and other athletes cope with personality changes that canoccur with concussions.

The revisions and additions to this comprehensive volume were made to ensure that the scope andcoverage is both up-to-date and down-to-earth. Key features include:

A forewordwritten by ABC World News correspondent Bob Woodruff, who sustained a TBIwhile covering the war in Iraq, and his wife Lee Woodruff

A new chapter on posttraumatic stress disorder, which emphasizes the common co-occurrence oftraumatic brain injury and PTSD in both combat and other settings
