• “Wax drippings from candles can be scraped off of most hard surfaces with the side of a credit card.” -- T.E. in Kan-sas

• To prevent garbage cans from filling with water during rainstorms, drill several holes in the bottom, near the sides. This also will help bags to come out of the can easier.

• “Use fluoride toothpaste on a facial blemish for over-night relief. Just dab a tiny bit of your regular toothpaste on a pimple, and cover with a bandage. It should relieve red-ness and swelling. If you have very sensitive skin, don’t try this trick, as it can make it worse.” -- B.B. in Tennessee

• If you have wood floors, you might already know about felt furniture pads -- the little self-stick felt circles you put on furniture legs to reduce scratches on your floors. You might not know that these same pads can reduce scuff marks that appliances make on countertops. It also makes it easier to scoot around a heavy mixer or other appliance.

• “Here’s a great tip if you need to pack up something fragile: Use a shredder to shred sheets of newspaper. It works far better than just wrapping in paper, and it costs much less than packing peanuts. Also, you can reuse these shredded newspaper pieces in the garden, or put them in your compost pile.” -- R.C. in Minnesota

• “If you’re looking to save money, don’t ignore the dol-lar store. You can find a lot of personal-care and home-care items there for, well, a dollar. I save quite a bit of money this way.” -- R.L. in Texas

If you’re still wary of using computer technology because of the complications, or if you use the computer at the library because the cost keeps you from having your own, AARP has good news for you -- the RealPad tablet, specifically designed for seniors.

Here are a few things that make the RealPad good for hesitant seniors:

There’s an intuitive interface to help you send email and photos, browse the Internet and even have video chats. It comes already loaded with apps (applications, or programs) and tutorial videos on how to use the touch screen, browse the Internet and set up a video call or email.

The RealQuick Fix feature has one button that helps you view the status of your tablet and identify what might be wrong (for example, if your WiFi goes out) and fix it with one click.

Customer service is 24/7 -- and free. Call the toll-free number, and you’ll get help with any questions.

The price is $189, and it includes a year membership in AARP (or a year extension on a current membership), plus a one-year limited warranty on the tablet.

Here are some of the things that stand out on the list of specifications:

• powered by an Intel Atom processor, which means it’s fast.

• a 7.85-inch touch screen• WiFi (You’ll need WiFi in your home, or use a free

one in stores, libraries and many other places.)• front- and rear-facing cameras (front for your video

chats and rear for your own photos)• 16 gigabytes of storage• built-in speakers

RealPad was available to pre-order early in Septem-ber, and it will be in Walmart stores in mid-October. To see the RealPad, go online to www.aarprealpad.org.

Answer on page 15Cleaning Chimney Not a

DIY ProjectQ: Can I clean my own chimney? I don’t want to

spend tons of money and be told I have to make ex-pensive repairs just to use the fireplace. -- Rich C. in Portland, Maine

A: Your reluctance is understandable, because the chimney cleaning industry, like other contractor services, has suffered in recent years from scams. Unscrupulous scammers often target new homeowners or seniors, advertising unbelievably low prices for a chimney cleaning. They then sock the homeowner, after a cursory (or even no) inspection of their chimney, with a huge cleaning and repair bill.

Still, if you want to safely use your fireplace, an annual cleaning and inspection is extremely impor-tant. Contact more than one chimney cleaning service (three or more if possible) and get a price quote. Don’t agree to any work until you’ve seen estimates from a few services. Don’t be pressured into a sale you’re not ready for.

Your home’s furnace is another item that should get a checkup from a heating professional. Again, if the contractor inspecting your furnace says repair work needs to be done, get multiple estimates before agree-ing to anything.

Those concerns aside, you can do some basic in-spection and maintenance tasks yourself. These don’t replace the contractor, but help you get familiar with your house’s heating systems.

You can visually inspect the firebox and damper, and check the bottom part of the chimney flue. Open the damper and use a flashlight to look up the flue, checking for debris like leaves or nests, as well as creosote buildup. This black, sticky gunk is extremly flammable and is one of the things professional sweeps take care of. It’s also difficult to remove without the right equipment.

Clean the damper and firebox by removing ashes and unburnt wood (when they’re fully cooled) and brushing ashes and residue from the visible parts of the fireplace.

Get ready to turn on the heating system now, as well. Buy replacement filters and schedule the furnace’s annual inspection. Clean dust and debris from the registers and the air intake cover.

HOME TIP: To improve a furnace’s heating effi-ciency, consider adding insulation to heating ducts.

QUIZ TIME

“Longmire.” It was a great series. Why in Sam Hill did they cancel it, and to leave us hanging on who killed Longmire’s wife? Do you think another network will pick it up? -- Dominick C., via email

Q: I’m a big fan of “Longmire” on A&E. Can you tell me why A&E would cancel one of the better shows on television? -- Mary E., via email

Q: What the devil is A&E thinking, canceling “Long-mire”? -- Hal T., via email

A: This is just a sampling of irate reader letters I’ve received about the canceling of the much-loved A&E drama, and to tell you the truth, I have no idea why it was canceled. The show is A&E’s most-watched origi-nal drama series, and its season-three ratings had only a negligible dip from season two. There are heavy rumors

Q: Now that “Dancing with the Stars” has started back up, I got to thinking about one of my favorite mirror-ball-trophy winners: Apolo Ohno. Can you tell me

what he’s been doing lately? -- Frieda S. in GeorgiaA: The world-champion Olympic speed skater is

deep in training for the Ironman World Championship, a 140.6-mile triathlon competition that takes place Oct. 11 in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. I spoke with Apolo recently,

and it just so hap-pens that another “DWTS” champ was an impetus behind Apolo’s decision to com-pete.

“Hines Ward completed his f i r s t I ronman c h a l l e n g e i n Kona last year, and I was in-spired by it,” he

said. “I had been thinking about doing it last year, but I was traveling so much, it didn’t make sense. But I needed a challenge. I needed to inspire other people. I needed to inspire myself. I needed something that wasn’t anything like speed skating.”

Apolo is excited to make his mark once competition gets under way, and he got some advice from Hines: “The first thing Hines said to me was, ‘Brother, I’m praying for you.’ He said to just enjoy it and to take my time. It’s once-in-a-lifetime opportunity -- it’s pretty incredible. I’m in a whole new place now. I’m more confident; I’m stronger; I’m getting leaner; and I can’t wait to arrive in Kona. It’s a good feeling.”

• • •Q: I was shocked to hear of the canceling of A&E’s

Apolo Ohno

that the USA network is a solid contender to pick up the series, so let’s keep our fingers crossed for that (and let USA know you approve!).

***Q: Will “Hart of Dixie” return for another season?

-- Patricia S., via emailA: “Hart of Dixie” has been renewed by the CW net-

work for a 10-episode fourth season, but it won’t premiere until early 2015 in order to accommodate star Rachel Bilson’s real-life pregnancy. It was revealed during the Television Critics Association press tour this summer that executive producer Leila Gerstein is planning for the character of Zoe Hart to be pregnant as well.

• It was French Emperor Napo-leon Bonaparte who made the fol-lowing sage observation: “Never interrupt your enemy when he is

making a mistake.”• Given the notoriety Las Vegas enjoys as a place for

quick weddings, you might be surprised to learn that, technically, it is illegal in that city for a mustachioed man to kiss a woman.

• In 1923, a man named Frank Hayes earned the dis-tinction of becoming the first (and so far only) person to win a horse race posthumously. Hayes was actually a trainer rather than a jockey, and he was riding a 20-1 underdog named Sweet Kiss. It seems that Hayes suf-fered a heart attack in the midst of the race, but his body

by Samantha Weaver

stayed in the saddle while Sweet Kiss beat the odds to cross the finish line first. For the rest of her life, the horse he rode was nicknamed “Sweet Kiss of Death.”

• In his spare time, Jim Cummings, a successful voice actor, calls sick children in hospital wards and talks to them as some of his most famous characters, including Winnie the Pooh and Tigger.

• Some state names have come to the English lan-guage through roundabout routes. Take Alaska, for example. The state name comes from the Aleut word “alaxsxaq,” which in turn comes from the Russian meaning “the object toward which the action of the sea is directed.”

• Those who study such things say that even fish can have distinct personalities. Within a single species, sci-

entists have observed that some fish are quite adven-turous, willing to go to great lengths to obtain food or a mate, while others are much more timid, eschewing daring feats altogether.

A: Delftware is distinctive because of its soft, red-clay body and tin-enamel glaze. The first pieces originated in the region around Delft, Holland. The unusual color came from adding tin ash to lead glaze. During the 17th and 18th centuries, English potters were copying this technique resulting in designs that were unique to the British craftsmen. Later pieces were made for the souve-nir trade and these are not to be confused with the more scarce earlier examples. Prices vary depending on age and quality of the piece. I recently spotted a blue and white Delftware plate from the 18th century in a shop priced for $375.

• • •Q: I have a metal bootjack in a beetle design. I am en-

closing a picture for you and hope you can tell me more about it. I purchased it at a flea market in Albuquerque. -- Jimmy, Rio Rancho, N.M.

A: After examining your picture, I am convinced that you purchased a reproduction. Bootjacks have always been a popular tool for the removal of boots. By placing the heel of the boot in a U-shaped opening, the boot can more easily slip off the foot. Although older bootjacks

Collecting - continued from page 1 are collectible and often can sell for $100 and more, your reproduction is probably worth only about $15 or $20. The tipoff is that your bootjack is made from alu-minum; the older ones generally are cast iron, and oc-casionally wood.

• • •Q: Several years ago, I received a Hummel plate as a

gift. It is the 1976 “Apple Tree Girl.” What do you think it is worth? -- Betty, Sun City, Ariz.

A: According to “M.I. Hummel Figurines, Plates, Miniatures & More” compiled by Robert L. Miller and published by Portfolio Press, your plate probably is worth about $50.

• • •Q: I have a partial set of sterling flatware in the Al-

exandra pattern. Do you have any idea of when it was made? -- Barbara, Austin, Texas

A: Your pattern was made in 1961 by the Lunt Silver-smiths.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My cat’s current litter works fine, but I am reading some worrying things about the ingredients and how they might harm him. Plus there’s the environmental impact. Is there a good “green” cat litter available? -- Suzy G., via email

DEAR SUZY: You’re not alone in your concern about litter and the health of your cat. According to a report in Scientific American a couple of years ago, many litter products contain silica dust -- which can cause respiratory problems in cats. “Clumping” type litters may use a sodium bentonite clay, which swells up as it absorbs liquid -- however, it may cause gastrointestinal problems if ingested by cats, such as when they lick their paws to clean them after using the litter box.

There are also issues around how certain clays are mined, and the size of the “carbon footprint” surround-ing production of cat litter, including how far a product travels to reach store shelves.

Sure is a lot to consider when you’re just trying to find a better place for your cat to pee.

In response to consumer concerns, there are a few “green” litter products on store shelves. Look for a product like Yesterday’s News, litter made from re-cycled paper; SchweatScoop Natural Wheat Litter; World’s Best or Benovo, made from corn; or even litter made from wood shavings and sawdust.

If you’re feeling adventurous, look into creating litter yourself from old newspaper.

But don’t jump fully into “green” litter without consulting your cat: Test out a new product for a few days to see if your cat will use it. If it doesn’t adapt to one, try another.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTHBy Keith Roach, M.D.

Why Is Traveling So Tiresome?DEAR DR. ROACH: Traveling for a length of time

-- say, six hours or more -- on a train, bus or plane makes me rather tired. Others I discussed this with have had similar experiences. I find this strange, because for most of the travel time I am sitting doing nothing but reading or daydreaming. My question is: Do physiological changes taking place in the body brought on by the long period of sitting while in transit account for the fatigue, or is it simply mental boredom? -- R.S.

ANSWER: I think it’s both mental and physical. Pro-longed sitting recently has been shown to put people at increased risk for heart disease, as well as the known risk of blood clots. Getting up and walking around is always a good idea physically, and might help mentally as well.

More than simple tiredness, chronic fatigue syndrome is all-encompassing. The booklet on it explains the ill-ness and its treatment. To obtain a copy, write: Dr. Roach -- No. 304W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

• • •DEAR DR. ROACH: Orange juice was a staple for

breakfast when we were growing up. Mom would say, “Hurry up and drink your orange juice before it loses its vitamins.” I’ve noticed that when a carton of OJ is left out for even five minutes, it swells up, apparently due to some pretty volatile organic compounds. I’ve learned through the years that Mom was usually right. Was she right again? -- M.E.K.

ANSWER: Mom was partially right. Orange juice will lose its vitamins over time, especially if it gets warm. But that doesn’t happen in five minutes. Products that sit on the shelf for a long time lose their vitamins. As a student in organic chemistry, I did an experiment to find how much vitamin C was in certain products. Fresh fruits and vegetables (especially red bell peppers) had a great deal. A canned juice purportedly high in C had none at all. Even vitamin C tablets had lost 20 percent of their stated value even before their expiration date.

Orange juice containers will swell if bacteria in the juice release gas, at which point it should (obviously) be discarded. However, I wonder if the swelling in five minutes has to do with the air in the carton expanding due to the relative warmth of the air compared with the refrigerator.

• • •Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters,

but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to [email protected]. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.
