Big business needs big men

There is room and need for capable men in atl the allied activities of big business. But nowhere is there greater need or greater opportunity than in that very essential service to all business — Insurance (Fire, Marine and Casualty).

Insurance, as a profession, affords con- tact with the most vital activities of the commercial and industrial world.

The Insurance Company of North America, the oldest American Fire and Marine Insurance Company, has been an integral part of big business since 1792 and the earliest beginning of national affairs. Out of this long experience it urges those who are about to choose a calling to con- sider the world-wide influence of the insurance field.

"THE IRON HAND IN THE VELVET GLOVE"

One week ago last Monday at a dinner given those men

Who comprised the central governmental body of the Dormi-

tories, flee Provost Merrick Stated that the policy io lie fol-

hand in the velvet glove" On the Sunday following four

houses In the freshman group of dormitories staged a "row-

bottom." Which, according to well founded Information, was

instigated by the Freshman Cooperative Committee. The

Dndergraduate Council has properly dealt with this com mittee which came under its jurisdiction. The residents of the houses involved are being dealt with by the Dormitory government in the manner outlined on the front page of this laaue. •The iron hand In the reive! glove" has become an

when such action was absolutely n ic< Mary.

No man can truthfully say that it is "spirit" which prompts men to heave bottles and refuse from darkened rooms, to be collected the following morning by nen who already have their Share Of work tO perform.

The authorities have stepped in and said "aucll actions should net .i.ntiniie." They have backed up their words

The newly-born dormitory government has proved kg mettle. It is now up to the fre-.hm.in class at large and tire Individuals directly affected, to show the "spirit" about

FORREST—THE CLINGING VINE. Youth, charming and effervescent,

Urjdominates in this latest musical play

starring Pegf.y Wood. Youth—so se:

[dom found on tl •- stage and usually of such a dubious nature scatters criti- cism to the wu.ds in "The Clinging

Vine." It is the, basis 01 the show's su« -

cess. "The Clingli g Vine" il ;i thin! of light

r.ess. It tells of a business woman, i manufacturer of mixed paints in Oinahi\ who goes to New York. The subsequent'

| change in her nature to the dinging ivine type and the inevitable love affair ! constitute a pretty plot, simple enough but pleasing in its presentation.

1'eggy Wood, the one who clings, does inot liisappoli... Her attitude Is diffi- cult to understand; she hus a quiet emo |tiou :n her : ongs and lines that fits rather oddly to her character, but she is different, and being different Is being distinctive.

The cast and chorus are large. The girls are all voung -some shockingly so But they are enthuBlaalic and pretty The majority are blondes. The chorus men are somewhat insipid, but then, chorus men always appear so to the mas euline reviewer. Their singing counter acts all defects, however. Graceful dancing and popular music keep the au- dience constantly applauding.

One wonders during the performance if men really oo care for the clinging ^ine type in preference to the brainy, practical. common-Bonaical female. The ending of the play decides in favor of the happy medium, but the fact that the leading man foil in love with the cling ing vine at tirst cuuses speculation in one's mind. However, who cares? Thil- ls not a problem play; It is the moal pleasing musical comedy in town.

WALNUT—RED LIGHT ANNIE "Red Light \unie' is not a railroad

■torj but rather the story of the rise, fall and resurrection of a country girl. The play falls rhort of the high standard .sually seen al the Walnut. We are trankl) dleappolntad in It.

Sam Forrest ,OM of the co-authors of Hi. play made a ittle curtain speech between the fust and second acts in which he tried to rectify any misunder standing in connection with it* morality. Any lesson which the authors intended the public to draw from this story of questionable characters and dope a I- diets was rather clouded To us the play teemed to bordt r on crude vulgarity rather that on risque morality.

The show was not without its good 'moments, however. Frank Thomas and Paul Nicholson did a very finished bit of stage business in their masculine a. tempt at dish washing Mr Thomas also successfully *hetted the audience's ap- petites by his realistiactly gluttonous at tack upon Miss Ryan's home-cooked dinner.

Our conclusion is that the cast could have chosen a much better medium In which to dlsplav their hlstronic abilities

act also features Ida May Chadwick and the supporting cast includes the O'Neal sisters and Joe Donahue. With such a personnel there is no wonder that their offering is so well received. The sing- ing and dancing is exceptionally good, especially that of the O'Neal sisters. Miss Chadwick is certainly a corned; enne of rare ability, and we'll say that "Everything is All Right" In the whole act.

Howard Kyle's excellent acting puts across a well worked up drama called "The House at the Crossroad." He is supported by a very good cast and the act is well received.

A very clever dialogue by Harry Nor- wood and Alpha Hall furnishes the audi- ence repeated laughs. Miss Hall's abil- ity Is exceptional and much credit is due
