1.THECOLLECTIVE,ABRIEFHISTORYFoundedin1977asTheDrummersCollective,theschoolwascreatedbyasmallgroupofprofessionalNewYorkdrummers.Theideawastoassembleafacultyoftopprofessionalplayerswhohadtheprofessionalexperienceandtheabilityanddesiretoteach.Forthepast36years,thisoriginalconcepthasbeenthefoundationstoneofTheDrummersCollective,aswellastheotherdivisionsofTheCollective.

TheBassCollectivewasstartedin1996,asacomplementtoTheDrummersCollectivewiththephilosophythatdrummersandbassplayersshouldlearntogetherthemusicthattheyplaytogether.

TheGuitarandKeyboardCollectiveprogramswereaddedtoTheCollectiveinyear2000.ThesetwonewdivisionsgiveTheCollectiveacompleterhythmsectioncapability.Rhythmsectionsareafundamentalpartofourcurriculumandthereforeofferthemosteffectivelearningenvironmentforthestudentsofpopularmusic.TheVocalCollectiveisthenewestdivisionofTheCollective,startedintheFallof2012inordertoaccommodatethegrowingnumberofstudentsinterestedindevelopingtheirvocalskillsasacomplimenttotheirfirstinstrumentandithasalreadygrownintoaviableprogramforstudentswhoarepursuingacareerasaprofessionalvocalist.

2.MISSIONGOALSANDOBJECTIVES1.MISSIONSTATEMENT-ThemissionofTheCollectiveistobeahighqualityeducationalinstitutionintheareaofcontemporarymusicperformance.

2.GOALS-Ourgoalistopreparestudentsforcareersaswell-trainedperformersofcontemporarymusicbyofferingastructuredcurriculumwhichfocusesondevelopingthehighestlevelofmusicianshipandwhichprovidesthetechnical,conceptual,andperformance-orientedtrainingnecessaryforartisticandcommercialsuccess.

3.OBJECTIVES-Ourobjectivesinclude:thestudent’sdevelopmentofskills,suchassight-readingandinstrumentaltechnique,theassimilationofpracticalinformationfrommusictheorytostandardcontractprovisions,andtheacquisitionofawiderangeofperformanceexperienceinavarietyoftypicalmusicalsettingsandstyles.Programs,whichrangeinlengthfromonetoeight10-weekquarters,aredesignedtopresentspecificsequentialmaterialtostudentsinsmallclasssettingsandwithamaximumofexposuretoprofessionalmusicianswhoareexperiencedprofessionalsinthespecifictopicarea,andwhohavedemonstratedcompetencyasinstructors.

C.InternationalStudentsInternationalstudentsarerequiredbylawtostudyonaM-1StudentVisawhilemaintainingafull-timeplanofstudyinanaccreditedprogram.TheCollectivewill,asrequiredbylaw,reportanyinternationalstudentwhodoesnotmaintainaminimumattendancelevel,orwhohaswithdrawnfromaprogram.I-20FEE EachInternationalstudentwillberequiredtopayafeeforthequickdeliveryofanI-20internationaldocument.Thefeeis$75.InternationalstudentsarealsorequiredtopaySEVISfeesbeforebringingtheirI-20formtoUSconsulateforM-1Visainterview.Studentsincertaincountriesmayhavetopayafeetobookanappointmentwiththeirimmigrationconsulate.

ENGLISHLANGUAGEREQUIREMENT ItisthepolicyoftheU.S.governmentandTheCollectivethatstudentsmusthavesufficientEnglishlanguageskillstoparticipatesuccessfullyintheirchosencurricula.Ifitbecomesapparentthatastudent’sEnglishlanguageskillsareinadequate,theschoolmayrequirethestudenttotakeEnglishlessons.TheCollectiveDirectorcanhelpadvisestudentsaboutESLteachersandresources.AlowlevelofEnglishabilitymaylengthenthetimenecessarytocompleteaprogramofstudyandmayextendenrollment.

8.ATTENDANCEPOLICIES

A.Make-upsThestudentmaymakeupmissedclassesbyusingassignedprivatelessons.Absencescausedbyprolongedmedicalorpersonalemergenciesmay,onacase-by-casebasis,beconsideredforadditionalmakeupclasses.Studentsabsentwithoutnoticeforfiveconsecutivedaysormorewillbeconsideredtobeonaleaveofabsence,andwillneedtocompletetheLeaveofAbsenceprocedure(seesection9A).B.ChangingPrograms Studentswishingtochangeprograms,mustfirstgetpermissionfromtheAdmissionsDirector,andmaybesubjecttothelossofthemultiple-quarterprogramdiscount.Multi-quarterprogramchangesmustbemadenolaterthanfourweekspriortotheupcomingquarter.(See“Refunds”)

A.LeaveofAbsencePolicyStudentsapplyingforaleaveofabsenceduetobereavement,nationalservice,orseriousillness,arerequiredtosubmitawrittenrequesttotheDirector.Studentsrequestingaleaveofabsence,uponapproval,cantakeupto30daysoffandoneextensionofanother30daysonlywiththeDirector’sapproval.B.GradingSystem Individualclassesaregradedonapercentageandlettergradebasis.Incomingevaluationsandjuriesaregradedona1to5basis,with1representingabeginnerlevel,and5representinganadvancedpre-professionallevel.AllofTheCollectiveprogramshaveanumberdesignationrepresentingtheminimumrequiredlevelforthatprogram.(Seeprogramlevelsbelowunder“Curriculum”)C.Credit/ContactHoursPolicyItisassumedthateachcontacthourofclassorprivatelessontimewillrequireanadditionaltwohourofprivatepractice.Therefore,each“contact”hourrepresentsthreehoursofwork-oneinclass,plustwooutsideofclass.TheCollectiveawardsonequartercredithourforeverythirtyhoursofwork.Creditawardsforeachprogramandforeachclassmaybefoundonpage23ofthiscatalog.D.MinimumSatisfactoryGrade StudentsmustmaintainanaverageprogramgradeofCorhigherforalloftheircourses.Student¹sreceivingagradelowerthanCwillbeputonprobationstatusforthefollowingquarter.Afacultymemberwillbeassignedtoeachstudent,asananchorteacher,duringtheprobationperiod.Anystudentplacedonprobationwillreceiveawrittenwarning.StudentsonprobationthatarereceivingFederalFinancialAidwillneedtospeakwiththeFinancialAidAdvisortofindoutiftheirfinancialaidmaybeaffected.

E.MinimumStandardsofProficiency Thereisanexpectationthatstudentswillinvesttheappropriateamountoftimetoachieveaminimaldegreeofproficiencyoneachoftheweek-to-weekassignmentswithinthecourse.Theinstructorwilldetermineandcommunicatewhattheminimallevelofproficiencyisforeachassignment.Studentsfallingbehindinanyareashouldfirstreviewthematerialwiththeiranchorteacher.If,afterreviewingthematerialwiththeiranchorteacher,thestudentisstillhavingtroublecatchingupwiththeclassassignment,thenitisrecommendedthatthestudentuseanelectivelessontotakeanextraprivatelessonwiththecourseinstructor.Ifthestudentdoesnothaveanextraelectiveprivatelessonavailable,thestudentmayopttopayforanadditionallesson.

Ifthestudentisunabletoutilizetheaboveremedies,orhasusedtheseremedieswithoutachievinganappropriatelevelofproficiency,thenthestudentshouldmeetwiththeschoolDirectortodiscusstheproblemandpossiblesolutions

G.AcademicProbationandDismissalPolicy 1.Studentsfailingacoursewillbeplacedonacademicprobationandhaveonequartertomakeupthework.Aspecial“anchor”teacherwillbeassignedtothestudenttosuperviseandadvisethestudentduringthisperiod.2.StudentsreceivingalettergradelowerthanCwillbeputonacademicprobation.Twoconsecutivequartersofbelowpargrades(belowC)shallbeconsideredasafailureandsubjecttothestipulationsinsection#1,above.3.Studentsonacademicprobationaresubjecttothelossofscholarshipandwillnotbequalifiedforaschoolwork-studyposition.H.GraduationRequirements Studentsmusthavecompletedaminimumofthe6quartersDiplomaprogram,withanaveragepassinggradeofCorabove.Studentsmustalsohavecompletingaminimumof4readinglevelsand4musicianshiplevels.

10.STUDENTCONDUCTANDDISMISSALPOLICYThesafetyandsecurityofallstudents,faculty,staffandcustomersisaproperconcernofTheCollectiveSchoolofMusic.Actsofviolencemadebyoragainstanyoftheaforementionedarenotpermitted.Students,faculty,stafforcustomerscommittingactsofviolencearesubjecttodisciplinaryactionthatmayresultinsuspensionofprivileges,suspensionand/ordismissalfromtheCollege,and/orprosecutionundertheappropriategeneralstatutes.Thefollowingbehaviorsareprohibited:

● Anyactorthreatofviolencemadebyastudent,employeeorcustomeragainstanother;● Anyactorthreatofviolenceincluding,butnotlimitedto,intimidation,harassmentorcoercion;● Anyactorthreatofviolencewhichendangersthesafetyofstudents,employees,customers,vendors,contractorsor

Advisement Eachstudentisassignedan“anchor”teachertoadvisehim/heroncourse-relatedissues.Inaddition,theCollective’sDirectorandAdmissionsDirectorserveasadvisorsforpersonalorgeneralprogramissues.

Health&Welfare TheCollectivedoesnotofferstudenthealthinsurance.Studentsshouldmakearrangementswiththeirfamily’sinsurerforappropriateinsurancecoverage.

StudentIDDiscounts Eachmatriculatedfull-timestudentisgivenapictureIDtobewornwhileontheschoolpremises.TheseIDcardsmayalsobeusedtotakeadvantageofstudentdiscountsatlocalarearestaurantsandmusicvenues,andgenerallythroughoutNewYorkCity.

14.GRANTINGADVANCEDSTANDINGPOLICY TheCollectivedoesnotaccepttransfercredits.however,applicantsareevaluatedandplacedwithinagivenprogramaccordingtotheircurrentlevelsoftechnicalability,musicianship,andperformanceskills.

15.FINANCIALASSISTANCEANDSCHOLARSHIPINFORMATION

A.No-InterestPaymentPlansTheCollectiveoffersallmultiple-quarterstudentsano-interestpaymentplan,consistingofadepositof25%ofthetuition,withthebalancebeingpaidinequalmonthlyinstallmentsthroughthebalanceoftheterm(minusonemonth)ofstudy.

B.MeritScholarshipPartialMeritScholarshipsareawardedtoanumberofselectedstudents.Allapplicationsandauditionswillbereviewedforscholarshipawardeligibility.TheamountofscholarshipisbasedontheperformanceandtechniquelevelofthestudentandisdecidedbytheScholarshipCommittee. Meritscholarshipsareawardedinadvanceforthesuccessfulcompletionoftheprogramtowhichthestudentisenrolledandwillbewithdrawniftheprogramisdropped,changed,orleftuncompletedandwillbefactoredinrefundcalculations.

Allstudentsarerequiredtotakeatwo-hourseminaronthesetopicseachfallquarter.Theinstructorfortheseclassesisamedicalprofessionalfromthelocalareamedicalcommunity–usuallyanurseornurse–practitioner.Thiscourseisrepeatedinthespringquarterforanystudentwhohasnotyettakenthecourse.
