1.THECOLLECTIVE,ABRIEFHISTORYFoundedin1977asTheDrummersCollective,theschoolwascreatedbyasmallgroupofprofessionalNewYorkdrummers.Theideawastoassembleafacultyoftopprofessionalplayerswhohadtheprofessionalexperienceandtheabilityanddesiretoteach.Forthepast36years,thisoriginalconcepthasbeenthefoundationstoneofTheDrummersCollective,aswellastheotherdivisionsofTheCollective.
TheBassCollectivewasstartedin1996,asacomplementtoTheDrummersCollectivewiththephilosophythatdrummersandbassplayersshouldlearntogetherthemusicthattheyplaytogether.
TheGuitarandKeyboardCollectiveprogramswereaddedtoTheCollectiveinyear2000.ThesetwonewdivisionsgiveTheCollectiveacompleterhythmsectioncapability.Rhythmsectionsareafundamentalpartofourcurriculumandthereforeofferthemosteffectivelearningenvironmentforthestudentsofpopularmusic.TheVocalCollectiveisthenewestdivisionofTheCollective,startedintheFallof2012inordertoaccommodatethegrowingnumberofstudentsinterestedindevelopingtheirvocalskillsasacomplimenttotheirfirstinstrumentandithasalreadygrownintoaviableprogramforstudentswhoarepursuingacareerasaprofessionalvocalist.
2.MISSIONGOALSANDOBJECTIVES1.MISSIONSTATEMENT-ThemissionofTheCollectiveistobeahighqualityeducationalinstitutionintheareaofcontemporarymusicperformance.
2.GOALS-Ourgoalistopreparestudentsforcareersaswell-trainedperformersofcontemporarymusicbyofferingastructuredcurriculumwhichfocusesondevelopingthehighestlevelofmusicianshipandwhichprovidesthetechnical,conceptual,andperformance-orientedtrainingnecessaryforartisticandcommercialsuccess.
3.OBJECTIVES-Ourobjectivesinclude:thestudent’sdevelopmentofskills,suchassight-readingandinstrumentaltechnique,theassimilationofpracticalinformationfrommusictheorytostandardcontractprovisions,andtheacquisitionofawiderangeofperformanceexperienceinavarietyoftypicalmusicalsettingsandstyles.Programs,whichrangeinlengthfromonetoeight10-weekquarters,aredesignedtopresentspecificsequentialmaterialtostudentsinsmallclasssettingsandwithamaximumofexposuretoprofessionalmusicianswhoareexperiencedprofessionalsinthespecifictopicarea,andwhohavedemonstratedcompetencyasinstructors.

ENGLISHLANGUAGEREQUIREMENT ItisthepolicyoftheU.S.governmentandTheCollectivethatstudentsmusthavesufficientEnglishlanguageskillstoparticipatesuccessfullyintheirchosencurricula.Ifitbecomesapparentthatastudent’sEnglishlanguageskillsareinadequate,theschoolmayrequirethestudenttotakeEnglishlessons.TheCollectiveDirectorcanhelpadvisestudentsaboutESLteachersandresources.AlowlevelofEnglishabilitymaylengthenthetimenecessarytocompleteaprogramofstudyandmayextendenrollment.

8.ATTENDANCEPOLICIES
A.Make-upsThestudentmaymakeupmissedclassesbyusingassignedprivatelessons.Absencescausedbyprolongedmedicalorpersonalemergenciesmay,onacase-by-casebasis,beconsideredforadditionalmakeupclasses.Studentsabsentwithoutnoticeforfiveconsecutivedaysormorewillbeconsideredtobeonaleaveofabsence,andwillneedtocompletetheLeaveofAbsenceprocedure(seesection9A).B.ChangingPrograms Studentswishingtochangeprograms,mustfirstgetpermissionfromtheAdmissionsDirector,andmaybesubjecttothelossofthemultiple-quarterprogramdiscount.Multi-quarterprogramchangesmustbemadenolaterthanfourweekspriortotheupcomingquarter.(See“Refunds”)

9.ACADEMICPOLICIES-StandardsforMonitoringProgress
A.LeaveofAbsencePolicyStudentsapplyingforaleaveofabsenceduetobereavement,nationalservice,orseriousillness,arerequiredtosubmitawrittenrequesttotheDirector.Studentsrequestingaleaveofabsence,uponapproval,cantakeupto30daysoffandoneextensionofanother30daysonlywiththeDirector’sapproval.B.GradingSystem Individualclassesaregradedonapercentageandlettergradebasis.Incomingevaluationsandjuriesaregradedona1to5basis,with1representingabeginnerlevel,and5representinganadvancedpre-professionallevel.AllofTheCollectiveprogramshaveanumberdesignationrepresentingtheminimumrequiredlevelforthatprogram.(Seeprogramlevelsbelowunder“Curriculum”)C.Credit/ContactHoursPolicyItisassumedthateachcontacthourofclassorprivatelessontimewillrequireanadditionaltwohourofprivatepractice.Therefore,each“contact”hourrepresentsthreehoursofwork-oneinclass,plustwooutsideofclass.TheCollectiveawardsonequartercredithourforeverythirtyhoursofwork.Creditawardsforeachprogramandforeachclassmaybefoundonpage23ofthiscatalog.D.MinimumSatisfactoryGrade StudentsmustmaintainanaverageprogramgradeofCorhigherforalloftheircourses.Student¹sreceivingagradelowerthanCwillbeputonprobationstatusforthefollowingquarter.Afacultymemberwillbeassignedtoeachstudent,asananchorteacher,duringtheprobationperiod.Anystudentplacedonprobationwillreceiveawrittenwarning.StudentsonprobationthatarereceivingFederalFinancialAidwillneedtospeakwiththeFinancialAidAdvisortofindoutiftheirfinancialaidmaybeaffected.
E.MinimumStandardsofProficiency Thereisanexpectationthatstudentswillinvesttheappropriateamountoftimetoachieveaminimaldegreeofproficiencyoneachoftheweek-to-weekassignmentswithinthecourse.Theinstructorwilldetermineandcommunicatewhattheminimallevelofproficiencyisforeachassignment.Studentsfallingbehindinanyareashouldfirstreviewthematerialwiththeiranchorteacher.If,afterreviewingthematerialwiththeiranchorteacher,thestudentisstillhavingtroublecatchingupwiththeclassassignment,thenitisrecommendedthatthestudentuseanelectivelessontotakeanextraprivatelessonwiththecourseinstructor.Ifthestudentdoesnothaveanextraelectiveprivatelessonavailable,thestudentmayopttopayforanadditionallesson.

15.FINANCIALASSISTANCEANDSCHOLARSHIPINFORMATION
A.No-InterestPaymentPlansTheCollectiveoffersallmultiple-quarterstudentsano-interestpaymentplan,consistingofadepositof25%ofthetuition,withthebalancebeingpaidinequalmonthlyinstallmentsthroughthebalanceoftheterm(minusonemonth)ofstudy.

Allstudentsarerequiredtotakeatwo-hourseminaronthesetopicseachfallquarter.Theinstructorfortheseclassesisamedicalprofessionalfromthelocalareamedicalcommunity–usuallyanurseornurse–practitioner.Thiscourseisrepeatedinthespringquarterforanystudentwhohasnotyettakenthecourse.
EachstudentreceivestheNASMstudentinformationsheetforbothNeuromusculoskeletalandVocalHealth.ThetopicoutlineprovidedintheInformationandRecommendationsforAdministratorsandFacultyinSchoolsofMusicisfollowedaswritten.

2.BANDREHEARSAL:(8classsequence–16contacthours)Studentsrehearsematerialtobeusedintheirfinaldemopackage.
3.RECORDING:(8classsequence–16contacthours)Studentsrecordwithaliverhythmsection,thematerialtheyhaveselected,andrehearsed.
4.OVERDUBBINGANDMIXINGSESSION:(8classsequence–16contacthours)Studentscontinuetoworkwiththeprojectengineertooverdubandmixdownthematerialrecordedinthepreviousrecordingsession.
ExamRequirements:FINALRECORDINGPROJECTANDRECITAL:(1class-2contacthours)Thequarterendswitheachstudentfinalizingtheirprojectsforthequarter.Fourhoursofadditionalrecordingandmixdowntimeisallocatedtoeachstudentforthispurpose.Eachstudentalsorehearsesandperformssomeoftheirpreviouslyrecordedworkinfrontofanaudience.
