TREASURE COAST HISTORYTourists flock to the Treasure Coast of Florida but how many people actually know the history behind this region. Florida’s Treasure Coast, an area of reefs and beaches off Sebastian and Ft. Pierce, was so named for the shipwrecks offshore there, in the Atlantic Ocean. They were caused by what is called the 1715 Plate Fleet disaster, one of the most colorful sagas in Florida’s coastal history.

In 1715, a Spanish treasure fleet, working its way up the coast of Florida toward the safety of St. Augustine, was sunk by a hurricane that scattered the bounty along Florida’s shore waters. Another wreck of a Spanish treasure ship in 1618 also occurred in this area, now called the Treasure Coast, located near the city of Vero Beach. Today, treasure, mostly in the form of coins, can still be found in the waters of the coast and sometimes along the beaches themselves.

Sebastian Inlet

Just north of Sebastian Inlet is an area known as Half-Reale Beach. The name comes from the most common type of the many silver coins that have been found there. Our tip is to use a metal detector to work the area around the beach entrance at Bonsteel Park.

Wabasso Beach

Try Wabasso Beach, at the end of River County Road 510. While this area is a favorite location for beach treasure hunters, you can increase your odds of finding coins by doing a little scuba detecting. The 1618 and 1715 wrecks account for the treasures found here. The scatter range for this area stretches down to Indian River Shores.

Seagrape Beach to Turtle Trail Beach

The stretch of beach from the Seagrape Beach access to Turtle Trail Beach access is an area where yet another Spanish treasure galleon is suspected to have sunk, due to the number of silver coins found there.

Port St. Lucie

Another galleon from the 1715 fleet was blown ashore and broke up off the beach at the north end of Hutchinson Island, just below Fort Pierce Inlet. While most of the significant finds in this area have been made in deeper water at the second line of reefs, scuba diving off the beach is still productive. Gold coins have also been found along the beach itself.
