The Trinidad State Junior College soft-ball team had a productive weekend, taking a pair of games from Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colo. over the weekend. TSJC won by scores of 8-2 and 9-8.

In the first game, freshman pitcher Teaja Rivera kept NJC in check by allowing just two runs over seven innings in the victo-ry. Joni Davenport, Melissa Pigott, Caylie Phelts and Macie Christian each had two hits to pace the Lady Trojans, while Shelby Cornett and Deanna Montano each hit a home run in the 8-2 win.

In the second game, the Lady Trojans held off a late comeback by the Plainswom-

en to eke out the 9-8 victory. Torri Atencio pitched the final five innings in relief, pick-ing up the victory after starting pitcher Ri-vera was hit by a line drive in the second in-ning, forcing her to leave the game with an injury. The Trojans racked up 13 hits in the win, with Pigott going 4-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Phelts picked up three hits in the contest and Caiden Yocham add-ed two.

Up next for TSJC will be a six-game road trip to Western Nebraska, North Platte and McCook Community College. Currently the Lady Trojans are 5-7 in conference play, sit-ting fourth in the standings. The team has an overall record of 10-12. The Trojans’ next home games will be a doubleheader with Otero Junior College on Tuesday, April 8, beginning at 1 p.m. at Southside Park.

Trinidad State put together a solid team effort by shooting a combined 607 to finish second at the Northeastern Junior College Invitational last week. The Trojan finished 15 shots behind Southeast CC but outdis-tanced Region IX opponents Northeastern (615) and Eastern Wyoming (619) to close the gap in the overall team standings. TSJC trails Eastern in the overall standings, with the region winner earning a trip to the Na-tional Tournament.

Individually, Andrew Ellis put together rounds of 74 and 70 to place second, four strokes behind tournament champion Zac Taylor from Southeast. Josh Cronk shot a 150, which was good enough for a share of

the fourth spot. Carlos Sisneros (155), Justin Frederick (158) and Justin Hume (166) also placed for the Trojans.

“It was great to see our third and fourth guys step up to finish second and fourth overall in the tournament,” commented Coach Rich Holden. “I thought all the guys played with a sense of urgency, but that goes without saying. We are still down two tour-naments with only four to go. We know we pretty much can’t lose to Eastern Wyoming again. Our preseason preparation has paid off so far, but we have a long way to go if we hope to keep our string of National Tourna-ment appearances alive.”

The Trojans will head to the Otero/La-mar Invitational this week, Thursday in La Junta and Friday in Lamar, with hopes of shortening the gap between themselves and the Lancers.

Because the Miners share their home field with the TSJC Trojan baseball team, it’s not very often that the high school play-ers get to roam the field at Central Park. This season the Miners have only three home stands scheduled. So it was a treat for the more than 100 Trinidad faithful who

were in attendance on Saturday when their beloved Miners played host to the Lamar Savages in Trinidad’s home opener. The Miners, however, dropped both games of the doubleheader by a combined score of 22-4.

The first game saw the Miners play in-spired defense in the field. The team also did well at the plate, holding a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Trinidad would not give up a run until the top of the sixth, but then allowed three, giving Lamar its

first lead on the day. An RBI double to open

the top of the seventh broke the game wide open, and the Savages won the first game by a final score of 7-1. Junior Lane Velarde pitched six solid innings for Trinidad, giving up 10 hits while strik-ing out three batters and allowing four earned runs. The Miners, however, com-mitted three crucial errors that played a big part in La-mar’s success on the day.

Offensively for the Min-ers, Marcus Festi, Waylen Hackett, Darian Lujan, Vance Ferraro and Seth Crumer had hits. Jared Her-nandez drove in the only run in the game for Trini-dad on a sacrifice fly.

In the second game, the Savages jumped out to a seven-run lead before the Miners began to claw their way back. Freshman Vance Ferraro got Trinidad on the scoreboard with an RBI tri-ple in the bottom of the fifth inning. Errors by the Min-ers, however, once again played a major role in the Savages’ success. Trinidad gave up four runs on four errors in the top of the sixth inning, combining bad fielding with bad throws.

The shining light for the Miners in game two was Matthew “Shooby” DeAngelis’ pitching. “Shooby” pitched five innings, striking out 10 batters and giving up only three earned runs.

A second Ferraro triple drove in two more Miner runs in the bottom of the sev-enth inning, but the damage had already

been done. Trinidad dropped the second game by a final score of 15-3. Leading the way for the Miners offensively were Marcus Festi, who went 2 for 4 with a run scored; Darian Lujan, who went 2 for 3 with a dou-ble; Vance Ferraro, who drove in three runs while going 2 for 3 with two triples; and Seth Crummer, who went 2 for 3. The Miners dropped their sixth game of the season.

The Miners will travel to Dolores Huer-ta, La Junta and Rocky Ford before return-ing for a home stand with Ellicott and St. Mary’s on April 19 and 26, respectively.
