Observation & Insights (1)Observation Documented: 01 May 2013, NTUC Fairprice @ AMK HUB. (On-Site Observation) - A lot of parents tend to place their overage children on the Supermarket Trolley. - Some of the observation we identified was that majority of the children and babies seated on the trolley tend to fidget around, some even trying to stand up which could cause potential hazard. - Most parents were not using the trolley’s baby seat. They rather carry their children/babies themselves as most felt that the trolley’s baby seat is not “safe” for their children. - Most young children/babies tend to grab anything they could reach for and that could be a potential hazard.

Persona (1)Name (Audience): Tan Gian Keok Age: 60 Gender: FemaleTargeted User: Babies/Children at the age of 1 – 2 year old. Grandmother of a Child • A grandmother for her grandson who is at the age of 1 year old. She bring

along her grandson whenever she goes to the Supermarket to shop for groceries.

• Being an elderly, her mobility has become slower and this could hinder her from taking care of her grandson efficiently.

• Her grandson, only 1 year old, he haven’t have the capabilities of walking around independently and at that age, he’s very playful and loves to grab anything he could reach for. (According to Mdm Tan Gian Keok)

• Whenever her grandson seated at the trolley seating area, He would start to fidget around and what make matter worse, He would even try to stand on the seat.

Persona (2)Name (Audience): Amy TanAge: 40Gender: FemaleTargeted User: Babies/Children at the age of 1-2 year old. • A mother of a son (2 year old) who is diagnosed with Attention Deficit

Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), one of the typical traits of an ADHD child is failing to sit or stand still for a long period of time.

• Her son have short attention spans and gets bored easily while in the supermarket and her son would occasionally attempts to get out of the seat.

• Her son have a tendency to reach out and grab anything from the shelves and might accidentally damage the objects or even try to stuff them into his mouth.

• Amy normally shops with a basket rather than an uncomfortable trolley, but without her son at the seat, he would wander around the supermarket and get lost, or worse still, he might even get into serious trouble.

• Therefore she raised the needs to use an improved, comfortable trolley for her son.

• A Father of 3 young and impressionable kids, 2 of them with the age of 2, and the other, the age of 1.

• His kids are generally naughty and loves to touch objects and drop fragile objects from the shelves

• Sometimes, Wilson will stop to re-browse his long shopping list for a very long period of time, leaving his kids idle.

• Wilson have the tendency to bring a car seat along in case more than one of his kids to need take a seat.

“ Other than stressing out with my shopping list, my

kids have added to my worries too , therefore I’m always on the lookout for

them.”

Targeted Audience’s Need

Needs:

• To prevent their baby/child from standing on the trolley seat.

• To prevent the baby/child from fidgeting around and trying to grab anything within their reach.

• To ensure that the baby is safe while the parent’s are out shopping for groceries.

Adult Supervision• It is difficult to browse shelves in a store and closely supervise a child in a

shopping cart at the same time. • More than 80% of adults leave their children unattended at least once during a

shopping trip.• 12 Shopping cart–related injuries can and do occur in the time it takes to reach

for something on a shelf. • The fact that more than 90% of parents are present at the time of injury indicates

that adult supervision will not reliably prevent these injuries.

Rough Design Statement

• To improvise a design of a safety Supermarket’s shopping trolley which could be able to keep a safety of the user sitting on the trolley seat.

• To prevent baby/children from falling off, standing on the trolley’s seat and fidgeting around that may cause potential hazard.

• To prevent baby/children from falling off, standing on the trolley’s seat and fidgeting around that may cause potential hazard.

• By having all 3 aspects which are: educational game for the baby, safety ergonomics for the baby/child and safety deterrence for the baby/child to move around or stand on the seat.

Final Design Statement

- To design a detachable safety baby seat for supermarket trolley targeted for babies/child of the age of 1 – 2 years old which prevent the babies/child from falling off the supermarket trolley while the parents are busy with the shopping of groceries.

Concept Sketch

- This concept sketch is to facilitate how our end product will look like.

- In addition to that, the arrows represent areas that need to be improve based on the findings on the potential hazard.

- Having a clamping point so as to make the baby seat detachable.

1st Raw Prototype

- Educational game for the baby and act as toy that could divert the attention of the baby/child.

- Safety ergonomics for the baby/child by having a baby seat for good posture.

- Safety Deterrence for the baby/child to not move around or stand on the trolley by having a baby seat that come equipped with a safety seatbelt.

“I think the product is good but there’s room for improvement for the seat section. In addition to that, the toys, I would prefer something educational for my baby/child.”

“My kids the like sounds, bells, songs something that they can hear and see and they will definitantely love that kind of toys! And, I think it’s safe, as there’s a safety belt - my kids love to stand on the trolley.”

- Mrs Joyce was suggesting whether she could have 2 seats for both of her child?

“I think it’s a good product to have on the supermarket. It would promote safety on the supermarket trolley by having the baby seat and seatbelt too. I like your idea. I see children fall off the trolley before. It happen to me before. After that incident, I usually sling my baby with me during shopping at the supermarket.”
