Quick Start

W h a t i s Teacher Development Interactive ?

Teacher Development Interactive: An Online Course for ELT Professionals is an onlineteacher development and training course for a global audience of EFL and ESL teachers. It

offers a set of interactive multimedia teacher training modules that combine text, video,audio, PowerPoints, discussion, and quizzes.

The Course Outline in your Study Plan provides access to the Lessons and Sessions withinthem.

Course Screens

H o m e Your home page gives you information about your course and additional resources.

Description

My Course This panel gives you information about the course you are in, the lasttime you logged in, and a tutorial on how to use the course.

My Study Plan This panel provides information on the last unit you worked on, as well aswhat's next on your list to complete. Click on the View link to go to yourStudy Plan, which lists all Lessons and Sessions in the course. Click on theUnit link below "Last Worked On" to begin or to resume a section.

My Gradebook This panel shows your scores for the most recently completed lesson. Allactivities in a lesson must be completed for scores to appear. Click onView to go to the Gradebook Options screen where you can choose toview your gradebook for the unit activities, or for the Module and LevelTests.

The tab structure at the top of the Home screen is a quick way to get to the different sections of thecourse. These tabs are available on all course screens.

Home Click on this tab to go to the Home screen from anywhere in thecourse.

Study Plan Click on this tab to go to your Study Plan (shown on page 5).

Gradebook Click on this tab to go to your Gradebook (shown on page 16).

Settings Click on this link to go to the Settings screen where you can viewinformation about your course. From this screen, you can join adifferent course and update your personal information, such as your e-mail address.

Help Click on this link for Help topics to assist you in using the course.

Logout Click on this link to log out of the course.

Description

Lessons 1 - 5 Click on these links to see the Lessons within.

Module Test Click on this to go to the Module Test for this unit.

Instructor Note If the instructor note icon appears next to a lessonnumber, your instructor has left a note about thislesson. Click on the icon to read your instructor'snote.

Submitted Writing Activity This icon shows that you submitted the activity inthe writing section.

Graded Writing Activity This icon shows that the writing activity has beengraded by your instructor. You can go back to thewriting section to see your instructor's comments.

Description

The Study Plan page below contains links to the resources and contents of the lesson. Nextto each topic name there is a button which will say “View,” “Begin,” “Resume,” or “TryAgain.”

View Introduction: This link features the module expert giving abrief overview of lesson concepts.

Outline: This link contains specific information about thegoals of each session.

Related Readings: This link gives a summary of relatedreadings from the topics presented and practiced in the unit.

Begin When the button says “Begin,” this means that the activitiesin this section have never been viewed. Click on the sectionname or the “Begin” button to go to this section for the firsttime.

Resume If the button says “Resume,” it means that the activities arein progress. Click on the button to go to the last page viewedin this section.

Try Again When all activities in the section have been completed, thestatus of the button will read “Try Again.” Click on the nameor the score to go to that section of the course. You will be

able to review your answers.Click on “Try Again” to reset all activities in the section. Allsubmitted answers for all activities will be erased.

Outstanding! This message will appear if you score 100% on an activity.

Submitted This message will appear after you submit a writingassignment, a quiz, or Module Test. (Quizzes and the Test canbe submitted only once. An instructor can decide how many

times a writing draft can be submitted.)

Sample Course Screens

Description

At the top of any activity or presentation page, there are tools which will help you tonavigate to the different screens within the course.

This navigation tool is also known as a"breadcrumb trail." Click on one of thelinks to go back to that section.

This navigation tool will take you to thedifferent sessions or to the writingassignment. The sessions shown beforeand after the pull-down are what comebefore and after the session you arecurrently in. Click on these to go to thosesessions. To skip to other sessions of thelesson, click on the drop menu and thenchoose the session you want to go to.

To navigate from one screen to the next ina session, use the back and forwardbuttons at the bottom of the screen. If youare on the first screen of a session, onlythe forward button will appear. If you areon the last screen of a session, only theback button will appear. When you reach

the last screen, use the session navigationat the top of the screen to go to the nextsession.

A c t i v i t y t y p e sYou will do various kinds of activities in Teacher Development Interactive . In most activities,you will have two tries to answer correctly.

Description

Multiple ChoiceClick on thebutton to the leftof the answer youwant to select.Then, click onCheck Answers .If all youranswers arecorrect, you havecompleted theactivity. If someof your answersare incorrect,correct them andclick CheckAnswers again tocomplete theactivity.

If your answer iscorrect, you willsee a green checkmark. Click onthe "Clear"button. Thenclick “CheckAnswer.”

If your answer isincorrect, you will

see a red “X” nextto your selection.Click on the "e"button to see anexplanation.Then you canclick “Try Again”and do it again.

Drag and Drop

In drag and drop activities, you will see sentences or a paragraph with blanks. Click on aword or phrase and, while still holding down the mouse, drag it to the appropriate blank.When the blank turns blue, drop the word or phrase into the blank. Click on CheckAnswers to see if your answers are correct.

If your answer is correct, it will turn green. If it is incorrect, it will turn red and be crossedout. Click on the "Clear" button. Then do it again.

Use your mouse to roll over your incorrect answers to see the correct answer for that blank.Click on Try Again to clear all answers and try again.

Type-in

Use your mouse to place your cursor in the box and type in your answer. If there is a wordpool, use one of the words in the box. Click on Check Answers to see if your answers arecorrect.

If your answer is correct, it will turn green. If it is incorrect, you will see a red “X” next to

the type-in box. Click on Clear to clear all incorrect answers and try again.

If your new answer is correct, it will turn green. If it is incorrect, you will see the incorrectanswer crossed out in red.

Pull-down

Click on the pull-down box tomake yourselection from thelist. Click on theword or phrase inthe list to selectit. Click on CheckAnswers to see ifyour selectionsare correct.

If your answer iscorrect, it willturn green.

If your answer isincorrect you willsee the incorrectanswer crossedout in red. Clickon Try Again toclear all answersand try again.

Text-button

In text buttonactivities, you willsee sentences withtwo to three possibleanswer choices ineach sentence.Place the cursor overyour answer choiceand click. Click onCheck Answers tosee if you answersare correct.

If your answer iscorrect, it will turngreen. If it isincorrect, it will turnred. Click on theClear button to clearyour incorrectanswer. Click onanother answerchoice and click onCheck Answers tosee if your newanswer is correct.

If your answer is stillincorrect, it willappear in red, andthe correct answerwill appear inbrackets in green.Then you can clickTry Again and dothe exercise again.

Slide show

You will find links to extra examples in slideshows at the bottom of some pages. Click onthe link to open the slide show.

Click on the arrow to view a new slide.

Description

Each session begins with a video. To watchthe video click the play button below thescreen.

Watch the video as many times as you need

to. The Fast Forward button moves thevideo forward bit by bit. The Rewind buttonwill take you back to the beginning of thevideo.

There is a transcript for each video whichcan be viewed at any time.

W r i t i n gThe Writing section helps you internalize lesson concepts and practice your writing skills.

Description

The Question gives youthree possible topics. Youchoose one of the topics towrite about.

Use the box below to typein your response.

The Print button allowsyou to print your writing.

Click on Save to save yourwork in progress.

If you need to leave yourwriting but are not readyto submit your work, clickon Save and ReturnLater to save your writingand exit the section.

The Save and Submit button submits yourwriting to your teacher forgrading. Once this buttonhas been clicked, youcannot make any morechanges.

Use the controls at the topto format your writing withbold ( B), italics ( I ), andunderline (U).

If you are working with a teacher, your teacher will correct your writing. You can go back tothat section and review your teacher's comments. They will appear in blue. The teacher maydecide that you can submit the writing again. To submit the writing again, go back to thatsection, make your corrections, and click on Save and Submit . Your first submission will besaved as a draft . You will be able to see all drafts you have submitted after your teacherhas corrected them. To see all drafts, go back to the writing section and scroll down thepage. Each draft will begin with a blue box which tells you the number of the draft, yourgrade on that draft, and the Date and Time it was submitted.

Your teacher will decide how many times you can submit your writing. Check the status ofyour writings on the Gradebook panel of the Home screen. When your teacher has givenyou a final grade, it will not be possible to submit your writing again.

L e s s o n Q u i z z e sEach lesson ends with a quiz.

Description

The Quiz is five pages long and has four parts. Click on the Next button at the bottom ofthe screen to go to the part on the next page. When you have reached the last page, youwill see a Submit button. Click on the button to submit all your answers.

Important : Answer the questions on every page before you click on the Submit button.Once this button has been clicked, you cannot go back and change your answers. Thequizzes can be taken only once.

Evaluation and Assessment

G r a d e b o o kThe Gradebook provides an overview of all work completed for the course. Click on theGradebook tab at the top right of the screen to access the Gradebook Options screen.

Description

Choose a Gradebook Report to see your scores for the practice sections in the course.

Choose Session Activity Details to see your scores for the lesson activities you have takenin the course.

Choose Lesson Quiz and Module Test Results to see your scores on all lesson quizzes andthe Module Test.

Session Activity Detail: Each lesson is listed by number in the left column. You will see yourscores for each section of the lesson in the columns to the right. You can also see how muchtime you spent on a lesson. Note that scores will appear for the sections in the lesson onlywhen all activities in that section have been submitted.

Click on Export to convert the Gradebook information into an Excel document.Click on Print to print your Gradebook screen.

At the bottom of the Gradebook, you can also see your course average for all the lessons inthe course. You can also see the total time you spent in the course. Click on Return to goback to the Gradebook Options screen.

Quiz and Module Test Results: Each quiz or test is listed in the left column. Your score, aswell as the time you spent on the quiz or test, is listed in the columns to the right.
