EDUCATION OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM WITH

MR MILLS & CO

Year 13 Dive

In class we had covered most of the theory required by PADI, along with basic boat skills and dive boat etiquette. The pool dives went well with 12 students starting the practical.

After a day off to let Cyclone Debbie do her thing, we did our shore dive at Urquharts Bay, in below average conditions, and very poor visibility.

We had an early start the next day with our final dives and assessments at the Poor Knights Marine Reserve. Conditions in the morning for the trip were a nice change, with calm sunny conditions. Dolphins en route alleviated pending seasickness for a few.

Final dives were done in The Gardens and South Harbour, both giving students amazing experiences of fish life, swell and currents.

Many students faced huge challenges along the way to completing their course, balancing other school and cultural commitments as well as personal fears. As always the students represented the school well and supported each other to succeed. Many thanks to all involved for helping get the students ready and give the students this opportunity.

Year 12 Sea Kayaking After a theory session at school, we had our first skills day with Mark Garry at Kowharewa Bay. We learnt paddling techniques, before heading across to open water, where strong winds and heavy seas turned us back into the harbour. Some of us had not been in kayaks before so time was spent building our confidence before we practiced our exits and rescues.

On the second day, we headed out to Ngunguru. The morning was spent honing skills in the rising wind, as we headed up the river to calmer waters. Skills were practised and enhanced in the upper reaches of the Waiotoi River. We stopped for kai, (and filter coffee, made in a kayak) before heading back on the dropping tide to learn and hone more skills.

Stand out performers were Taneia and Raniera, always positive and encouraging others, assisting and leading those who needed extra support.

Huge thanks to Mark Garry. Students had many opportunities to show leadership and participate in a new and challenging experience.

Year 10 Ruapekapeka, Kororareka and Waitangi Mr Mills and Matua Ropata took 21 Year 10 students north. We visited Ruapekapeka, in cold, overcast conditions, where the students completed a worksheet on the battle site and learnt a lot from the visit there.

We then went on the car ferry over to Russell, up to the flag pole then into town to visit the Church and have lunch on the wharf. After a break for lunch and to check out the town, we continued into Waitangi for an excellent tour. Our tour coincided with the last day of a visiting Hawaiian delegation, whom Matua had a long standing relationship with. We took the opportunity to join in the Ukelele lessons, Learn to Hula sessions or learn traditional Hawaiian board games. After a visit to the waka, we spent time outside Busby house before heading home.

Many thanks to Matua Ropata for his time and knowledge, and to the Ngunguru Fiore Brigade for the use of their van. A wonderful day and many new experiences learnt.

STEM CLASS REPORT Recently we purchased some Makey Makey and Raspberry pi for use within our classroom and over the past three weeks we have been exploring these devices. So much fun from creating controllers for games to musical instrument.
