In 1921 Charlie Chaplin checked in to the Slieve Donard. His first marriage to Mildred Harris had ended in an acrimonious divorce and he was seeking rest and solace. To

add to his woes he had recently learned of the death of his first love Hetty Kelly who hailed from County Down and he was hoping to find something of her spirit on his visit. He signed the hotel register giving his address as simply New York City and for a while, he was taken to the hearts of Newcastle people as their very own link to the wonderful world of the movies.

Sir William Hastings, Chairman of the Hastings Hotels Group, is very proud of the hotel’s Chaplin link.

“ I suppose not everyone can be a Charlie Chaplin, but at our hotel we like to think we give everyone the movie star treatment.”

So if you catch the essence of a spirit, perhaps gazing out to sea, or at the majestic Mourne Mountains when next you visit Chaplin’s Bar, don’t be surprised.

Northern Ireland First Premium Craft GinAt Rademon Estate Distillery, located only 20 Miles from the Slieve Donard Resort, they are proud to be Northern Ireland’s First Craft Distillery. Their small batch philosophy ensures that every aspect of Shortcross Gin meets their exacting vision, from foraging for botanicals in the surrounding country estate to labelling and signing every bottle - everything is crafted and perfected by hand.

Created by husband and wife team David and Fiona Boyd-Armstrong, the Rademon Estate Distillery was established in 2012. David formerly an engineer from East Belfast, and Fiona, formerly a quantity surveyor, decidedto rekindle the distilling tradition that spans back centuries in Ireland. The very first batch of Shortcross Gin was released in April 2014 and Shortcross has gone on to win a series of prestigious international awards.

The name Shortcross came from the Gaelic for Crossgar, ‘An Chrois Ghearr’, meaning ‘the short cross’. The penny symbol on the bottle is in fact a Shortcross penny, the first coin to be minted in Dublin.
