Tea RoseAn introduction to surface embroidery

This is an exceptionally easy piece designed to teach novices basic surface stitches and to allow experi-enced surface workers a chance at a very fast design. The design can be used as the cover of a note card, asthe front of a small bag for an iPod or cell phone, a glasses cover, etc. As this is a very inexpensive designto stitch as written, it is ideal for use as outreach projects.

Materials needed:1 square felt (makes four) DMC 4180 variegated pink DMC 471 green Chenille needle #24

Use 6 strands for all stitches.

If desired, outline stem and leaves on felt. Stitch from base of stem to base of rose with chain stitch. Over-cast back down by whipping the thread through each chain (use eye of needle). Place three lazy daisyleaves where desired, using two lazy daisies per leaf.

The base for the spiderweb rose is the size of a nickel, slightly overlapping the stem. Make five straightstitches into the center of the rose using the pink, then come up in the center and start to weave around.Continue, not pulling too hard, until the rose is as large as desired.
