TEKS Streamlining and STAARAs revisions are made to the TEKS, changes are subsequently made to the assessment program to maintain a strong, direct, and effective link between the TEKS and the statewide assessments.

In April 2017, SBOE adopted streamlined TEKS for science with implementation set to begin in the 2018-2019 school year.

Please keep in mind that for any school year, the state assessments will alwaysalign to the curriculum in place across the state for that school year.

Science TEKS Streamlining The streamlined science TEKS are available on the TEA website Science TEKS Streamlining SBOE Adopted, Not Yet Effective webpage

until their scheduled effective date, August 27, 2018.

Once effective, the TEKS will be incorporated in the TexasAdministrative Code with “Adopted 2017” in their title.

Additional information and links to the adopted rules will be included in future communications through the science bulletin.

The current TEKS are the required TEKS until the2018 -2019 implementation of Streamlined TEKS.

Testing Requirements

Based on federal requirements, students are to be tested inmathematics• annually in grades 3-8

• once in high school

If a student is receiving accelerated instruction in mathematics, the student should take the assessment that best matches his/her instruction.

Grade 8 students who are receiving instruction in Algebra I shouldtake the STAAR Algebra I assessment.

• The results of the STAAR Algebra I assessment can be used to fulfill high school graduation requirements.

• TEA discourages double testing these students (i.e., giving the student the Algebra I assessment and the grade 8 mathematics assessment).



Grade 8 students who are receiving instruction in biology shouldtake the STAAR biology assessment.

• The results of the STAAR biology assessment can be used to fulfill high school graduation requirements.

• TEA discourages double testing these students (i.e., giving the student the biology assessment and the grade 8 science assessment).



Grade 8 students who are receiving instruction in a high school course that does not have a corresponding STAAR EOC assessment, for example IPC, do not have an assessment option that matches their instruction.

These students are required to take the STAAR grade 8 science assessment to meet their federal testing requirement.

However, if these students have already taken the grade 8 science test, then they have met their testing requirement for middle school science.

The Texas legislature has extended until 2019 the provision that allows students who have failed no more than two of the assessments required for graduation to be awarded diplomas by means of an Individual Graduation Committee.

Interim assessments

TEA will provide districts with interim assessments for grades 3–8 math and reading. These interim assessments are an additional tool schools can use to gauge student progress toward meeting achievement standards.
