!THE DISCIPLINE OF
SUFFERING Hebrews 12:1-7
Recognize that suffering may depart of the Christian life. When it comes, view it as a way to build endurance.
!OUR MEMORY VERSE
For the Lord disciplines the one He loves and punishes every son He receives. Hebrews 12:6
Our church family has received a thank
you note from:
Faustine L. Bates family
Please join us as we spread the love of Christ and the joy of Christmas through Operation Christmas Child! In our foyer, you will find foldable boxes to fill along with instructional brochures. Great opportunity for Sunday School classes, families, small groups and individuals to bless the lives of children all over our world. You can also track your box, specifically, to see where it goes.
We also have an opportunity for your students (13 years old and older) to join us as we go to the Atlanta processing center on December 20 to help get the boxes ready to ship. We are passing around a sign up sheet during our Youth SS time. Please see Jeff for details.

!Pk’s Perspectives
You’re probably not going to believe the story I’m about to relate…in fact, some of you will think I’m guilty of employing a bit of ministerial embellishment for the sake of having an entertaining newsletter article. I promise you, however, that this story is 100% true. And since I was the only eyewitness to the following, you’ll have to wait until heaven to verify the story. Trust me when I tell you that God will certify the following events as authentic! And now – the story… This all took place some time during January of 2002. Things were fairly hectic at the church where I was pastoring, my nerves were a bit frazzled and I knew I needed to get away for a few moments of solitude. So I left the office, went home, changed into my warm hunting garb as it was quite cool and headed for the sanctuary of the big timber along the banks of the Ohoopee River. I parked my truck, shouldered my shotgun (just in case some wild game presented itself) and headed into the quietness of nature. I traipsed along until I found myself on the river side of Blue Lake. I saw the time was about 4:00 PM so I located a nice, big, fallen tree to serve as a backrest, laid my gun against the tree, smoothed out a spot on the ground, planted my backside on that smooth spot, leaned my back against the tree, zipped my jacket securely around my neck, crossed my arms with my hands stuffed up the opposite sleeve to hold in the warmth, leaned my head back and promptly fell asleep! An animal-rustling-in-the-leaves kind of sound jerked me back from the nether world of naptime. I slowly opened my eyes (I didn’t know but what Sasquatch was standing behind me!), noticed the sun had descended considerably, saw that my gun was still beside me and proceeded to rotate my eyes in their sockets without moving my head so as to locate the noise maker. I looked to my right just as a squirrel was leaping from the ground onto the top of the very log that was also serving as my deep-woods recliner. This little creature ran down the log and stopped within a foot (twelve inches – we’re talking spitting distance) from my head. I remained motionless. The little creature proceeded to make a meal out of the acorn he (she?) had brought along in his (her?) mouth. The wild game that was secondary to my purpose for being in the woods (remember – I was primarily in search of solitude) was twelve inches from my nose and I had done nothing but practice the discipline of stillness. Part of me wanted to yell “BOO!” just to see if I could scare the squirrel to death but I was so completely mesmerized by the whole experience that I just remained still until the little bugger ran off, probably in search of more food. I stood up once the show ended, shouldered my gun and headed back to the truck with an empty game vest but a very full heart. You see, the Lord spoke to me during all of this. You need to remember why I was in the woods to start with. Hunting was secondary to the need to get away…slow down…experience the serenity of nature. As I watched that squirrel, the Holy Spirit reminded me of the words of psalmist who wrote, “Be still and know that I am God…” (Psalm 46:10). I could’ve rambled through those woods all evening but I would never have been able to orchestrate a face-to-face meeting with a squirrel. Stillness was the key. And so it is in our relationship with God. Face-to-face intimacy is not to be found in our urgent ramblings through life. Nope, it’s stillness that brings us into the kind of awesome, wondrous, amazing encounters with God that our souls so desperately desire. Slow down, friend. Practice the discipline of stillness. I hope you can make it to Sunday School and Worship this week. Cya, Pk.
