Want to spend two years teaching on the Teach First Leadership Development Programme before working for PwC? Then apply to Teach First and PwC at the same time, but defer your entry to PwC. Not only will schools and pupils benefit from your enthusiasm and expertise, you’ll also develop a host of skills with Teach First that you can bring to the business world – from leadership and communication, to planning and problem-solving.

The Teach First Summer Internship is a three-week paid placement with PwC. It’s a great way to get practical work experience that could lead to a job offer. You’ll spend three weeks in one of our business areas, learning about our work and organisation, as well as getting to grips with live project work and developing key skills. Perform well and we’ll offer you a graduate job in one of our business areas.

*Teach First refer to this as a Summer Project.

Even when you join us, you can continue to engage with Teach First in a number of ways. You could become a Teach First Coach, supporting a participant as they undertake their second year. We currently have coaches all around the UK from PwC supporting Teach First participants. There’s also a very active Teach First alumni group at PwC – made up of over 100 ambassadors – who work with various schools and charities, not just helping financially, but also offering skills and expertise developed with PwC. Whether it’s accounting, project management, running CV writing courses or workshops to help people find jobs, we’re working to help achieve the Teach First vision.

Why Teach First?

Spend two years teaching on the Teach First Leadership Development Programme and you’ll make a real difference to pupils in schools in low income communities, helping to ensure that no child’s educational success is limited by their socio-economic background.

The programme combines working, training and qualifying as a teacher with leadership development training, coaching and mentoring, plus a range of networking and internship opportunities. At the end of the two years you can then join PwC and pursue a career in business. Your time on the programme will have equipped

An independent charity and an increasingly powerful movement for social change, Teach First works to drive up educational standards and raise aspirations in schools in low income communities.

Teach First’s two-year Leadership Development Programme harnesses the enthusiasm and drive of outstanding graduates and experienced professionals. More than

Teach First was a great way to discover whether I’d enjoy teaching. Working with incredible children and seeing the impact I could have on their education was fantastic – and exhausting. I hadn’t envisaged how tiring constantly coming up with creative ways to engage 30 students with a subject would be. I learnt a huge amount though – like how to think on my feet and organise my time, which is invaluable when you have to juggle work and study. I also developed life skills, such as the ability to review my performance and reflect on the improvements I could make.

Deciding to leave teaching was hard, but I wanted to explore different career paths. After my Summer Internship with PwC, I accepted a graduate offer with them. Initially I worked in Private Client Tax, giving tax planning and compliance advice to senior executives. More recently I have moved to the Tax, People and Culture team, which delivers our people priorities and culture agenda to support the overall tax vision. While the work provides different challenges from teaching, I still find I draw on the skills I learnt through Teach First every day.

Giving back by teaching in a challenging school in a deprived area seemed a great way to spend two years after university. The best part was the students. They give you a different perspective on the world – and they’re a good laugh. I also enjoyed the responsibility – your classroom is your kingdom. And the creativity teaching demands definitely gave me an edge when I entered business.

I knew Teach First would generate a lot of opportunities beyond teaching. And as I didn’t see myself in a classroom

all my life, I completed an internship with PwC to experience the corporate world. I’m now part of a team that makes sure the figures a company reports are correct. Like teaching, the work is very people-oriented. So the fact that Teach First has heightened my ability to read people, collaborate and speak confidently to groups has been a big plus. Before I joined PwC I spent three years on the Teach First Leadership Development Programme which really prepared me for the work I do now as a Consultant. There’s nothing quite as challenging as trying to teach a class of rowdy teenagers, so I learnt to be resilient and deal with whatever was thrown at me. We now employ over 100 Teach First alumni who often perform better and progress faster than their peers.

Launched in July 2014 and delivered by PwC Recruitment and our Teach First alumni in London and the Midlands, it helps young people understand what opportunities are out there and make informed career choices. At a glance

PwC is committed to tackling social exclusion and alleviating unemployment in the UK, so we’ve regenerated a disused fire station, transforming it into a community hub called the Brigade. It offers apprentices the opportunity to attend workshops and gain work experience in the busy ‘live’ kitchen. Up to 28 people each year go on to do full apprenticeships at the restaurant. PwC’s volunteer mentors work with the apprentices one-to-one, helping to build their confidence, improve their skills in things like money management and CV writing, and prepare for work.

What we look for at PwC

We look for analytical rigour, leadership skills, confidence, strong communication and team-working skills and curiosity about the world of business.

You’ll need a 2:1 degree in any subject and although we no longer use UCAS tariffs for the majority of our graduate roles (including Assurance, Deals, Tax and Technology), for the following areas, you’ll need a UCAS tariff of at least:

320* for Actuarial

340* for Strategy Consulting

340* for Economics Consulting

(*or equivalent and excluding General Studies from your top three A-levels).

What Teach First looks for

Teach First looks for proven leaders and strong communicators who have the resources, resilience and self-awareness to be at their best in challenging situations.

You’ll also need:

a 2:1 degree or above  a UCAS tariff of at least 300 or equivalent (excluding General Studies) a degree or A-levels that satisfy the teaching subject requirements grade C (or equivalent) in GCSE Maths and English proof that you have the right to remain and work in the UK throughout the training and two-year programme.
