SLURS A slur is a line that connects two or more notes and indicates that these notes should be played legato. Legato means to play smoothly and connected.
Look at the example below and try playing the notes legato.

ENDING SYSTEMS The next piece uses a new type of ending system and repeat sign. Look at the example below to learn how to play a piece which has two different endings.
1ST AND 2ND ENDINGS Playing from the beginning all the way through the 1st ending where you reach the repeat sign. Repeat from the beginning, but this time skip over the 1st ending and play the 2nd ending instead.

SCALES A scale is a combination of notes put into a specific order. Scales are built by using a formula of half steps and whole steps. A half step is the very next key in either direction. A whole step is two half steps put together. Look at the example below to see how to build a C major scale.

WHAT IS AN OVERTURE? An overture is a piece of music that is played only by the orchestra before an opera, ballet, or other stage show begins. The overture will often contain musical themes that will be heard throughout the rest of the performance.
The overture theme you are about to play, was part of Rossini's last opera, "William Tell" which premiered in Paris in 1829.

TANGO The next piece is a famous tango from South America. Let's learn about the important elements of tango music.
TANGO STYLE • Tango music and the dance form known as tango originated around the end
of the 1800s in Buenos Aires, Argentina. • Tango music is traditionally played by group of musicians known as an
orquesta tipica which includes piano, violin, guitar, flute, and bandoneon (a type of accordion).
• Melodies and rhythms in tango music are syncopated. • The tango is the national dance in both Argentina and Uruguay. • La Cumparsita was originally written as a march, but was later arranged as a
tango. Lyrics telling a story of lost love were added in as well and transformed this piece into the most famous tango melody of all time.
