Mentor and Master Teachers2014 Mentoring TeachersMentors are selected by an application process and recommendations from principals. They attend ODE-sponsored mentor training and familiarize themselves with the requirements of the Resident Educator program for new teachers. This year, 50 mentors met regularly with their resident educators, supporting them in their new positions. When surveyed, the resident educators acknowledged that their mentor was the most important support they had in their first year of teaching.

Marilyn Parks Lifetime Achievement AwardMarilyn Parks epitomized the word “teacher.” Throughout her career, Mrs. Parks influenced thousands of Akron Public School children. In May 2001, she became the first recipient of the Akron Public Schools Lifetime Achievement Award. The award was renamed in her honor and is given annually. Mrs. Parks retold the story of the starfish countless times as she gave out starfish to remind her friends of the difference they made in so many lives.

The StarfishAn old man walked up a shore littered with thousands of starfish, beached and dying after a storm.A young man was picking them up and flinging them into the ocean.“Why do you bother?” the old man scoffed.“You’re not saving enough to make a difference.” “Made a difference to that one,” the young man said.
