TheTrialofEbenezerScroogeisasequeltoAChristmasCarolbyCharlesDickens.AChristmasCarolissetin19thcenturyEnglandwhereMr.EbenezerScroogeisamiserlyoldmanwhoownshisownbusinessinLondon.HeisknownaroundthetownforbeingextraordinarilymeananddisagreeabletohisemployeeBobCratchitandtothetownspeople.OnenightScroogereceivesavisitfromtheghostofhisdeadbusinesspartnerJacobMarleywhotellshimthathewillbevisitedbytheGhostsofChristmasPast,Present,andFuture.Fromeachvisit,Scroogeisshownaportionofhislifeandthelivesofothers.Attheendofthelastvisit,theGhostofChristmasFutureshowsScroogeavisionofhisowndeath.Afterseeingthishorriblevision,Scroogewakesupinhisbedterrified.Asaresult,ScroogeinstantlychangeshisselfishwaysandgoesoutonChristmasdaytodonatetothepoor,feedthehungry,andrightanywrongsthathehasdonetopeopleovertheyears.
TheTrialofEbenezerScroogepicksupayearlaterwhereweseethatScroogehasrevertedtohisoldself.Ayearafterhistransformation,Mr.ScroogecontendsthathewaskidnappedandtrickedintobeingachangedmanfortheyearfollowingChristmas.Asaresult,Mr.Scroogedrawsupawholelistofcriminalcharges:breakingandentering,kidnapping,attemptedmurder,andtheft.Hechargesthethreeghostsaswellastheothercharactersinthestory.TheplaybecomesmoreinterestingandhilariouswhenMr.Scroogeistheprosecutingattorneyinthetrial,oppositethecompassionatedefenseattorney,NancyRothschild,whorepresentsalloftheaccused.Inanefforttoshowtheabsurdityofthetrial,Mrs.Rothschildbringsallofherclientstothewitnessstandinordertogetdowntoallthefacts.Duringtheproceedings,eachwitnesscontributeshisorheraccountofthestorythatisinsomewaycontradictedbyMr.Scrooge.TherearealsocharactersthatcauseMr.Scrooge’sconfidencetotemporarilydisappear.WhenScrooge’soldfiancéeBelletakesthestand,sheforceshimtofacethemistakesofhispastwherehechosemoneyoverhappiness.
Afterallthetestimoniesaregiven,JudgePearsondeclaresthatthethreeghostsandJacobMarley(Scrooge’sdeceasedbusinesspartner)are“guiltyofallsaidcharges”afterwhichshecallsfora“terminationofalltheirghostlyduties.”Theghosts’careersaresavedwhenScroogedropsthechargesbasedontheagreementthattheghostscarryouttheChristmasspiriteverydayinadditiontoChristmas.Itisanail-bitingcomedythatendswithallpartiesbeingsatisfied.
Story Synopsis
MerryChristmas!Thosewordsalonecanfilloursenseswithmemoriesofthemostjoyoustimeoftheyear.Toooften,itistheseasonwherelifecanbecomeunbalanced–toomanygiftstopurchase,toomanylistsof“thingstodo”–anoverabundanceofpureAmericanmaterialism.Inreality,ifwearehonestwithoneanother,atonetimeoranotherwehaveallgotten“lost”inChristmas.
WhenperusingChristmasscripts,Iamoftendrawntothefunny.Whodoesn’twanttohaveafewjolly“St.Nick”bellylaughsduringthehappiesttimeoftheyear?!TheTrialofEbenezerScrooge,althoughclassifiedasacourtroomcomedy,hasmuchmoretooffertoourpatrons.SureitincludesthecharactersfromDickens’classic,AChristmasCarol,butthebackgroundstoryofhowtheplaywright,MarkBrown,cametowritetheplaytouchedaheartstring.
“Severalmonthsafterthetragiceventsof9/11,Ifoundmyselflongingforthedaysimmediatelyfollowing9/11.Notthetragedyandhorror,butthekindnessandgenerosityshownbymostlyeveryoneintheworld.Itwasatrulywonderfultime.Eventually,though,thatkindnessandgenerositydisappearedandwewerebacktoouroldways.Iimaginedthat’showScroogemusthavefeltaroundApril.HerehemadeavowtokeepChristmasinhisheartallyearlong,butthosewhochastisedhimfornothavingtheChristmasSpiritwerejustasguilty.Whenyouthinkaboutit,Scrooge’snephewonlycamearoundeveryDecember24thtowishhisuncleMerryChristmas.Whereishetheother364daysoftheyear?Thesolicitorscollectmoneyforthepoorbutnevershowupanyothertimeoftheyear.Ifeelthosecharactersareself-righteousandhypocritesfornotshowingupanyothertimeoftheyear.Whycan’tScrooge’snephewstopbysomerandomFridayjustbecausehewantstoseehisuncle?Whydon’tthesolicitorscomebytocollectmoneyinsummer?Thepooranddestituteneedhelpallyearlong,notjustatChristmas.”–MarkBrown

Meet the Characters
CHARLESDICKENSwasborninPortsmouth,England,onFebruary7,1812.Hewasthesecondinalineofeightsiblings.Hewrotesomeofourmostwell-readbelovedclassicnovels,likeOliverTwist,NicholasNickleby,DavidCopperfield,ATaleofTwoCities,GreatExpectationsandofcourse,ourfocus,AChristmasCarol,featuringtheprotagonist,EbenezerScrooge,anoldmiserwhofindstheChristmasSpiritwithsomehelp.
Hisfather,JohnDickens,wasanavalclerk,butalwayshadbiggeraspirations,whichspurredonJohn’sdangeroushabitoflivingbeyondthefamily’smeans.Hewasunfortunatelysenttoprisonfordebtin1824,whenCharleswasjust12yearsold.
Charleswasforcedtoleaveschooltoworkataboot-blackingfactoryneartheThamesRiver.Dickenshadstatedthathefeltcastawayatsuchayoungage,sayinggoodbyetohisyouthfulinnocence,feelingabandonedbytheadultsthatweresupposedtotakecareofhim.Thesethoughtsbecamerecurringthemesinhiswritings.Dickenswaspermittedtogobacktoschoolwhenhisfatherreceivedaninheritanceandpaidoffhisdebts.However,whenDickenswas15,hehadtodropoutonceagain,butthistime,becameanofficeboy.Thisjobhelpedlaunchhimintohiswritingcareer.

Withinayearofbeinghired,hehadbegunfreelancereportinginthelawcourtsofLondon.ThisledtoreportingfortwomajorLondonnewspapersinjustafewshortyears.In1833,hewassubmittingsketchestopapersandmagazinesunderthepseudonym“Boz.”Hisfirstbookwasborn,SketchesbyBoz.Hisearlysuccesscaughttheeyeof
CatherineHogarth,andtheyweremarried.Theylaterseparatedin1858afterhavingtenchildren.Dickensmayhavebeenthefirstmoderndaycelebrity,ashemadehisfirstU.S.tourin1842,andspokeofhisoppositiontoslaveryandsupportforreform.Hislecturesweresowidelyattendedthatticketscalperswouldgatheroutsidehisevents.Dickenswasabitofashow-offandbraggedabouthiscelebritystatus:“TheyflockaroundmeasifIwereanidol,”however,hegrewtoresenttheinvasionofprivacy.HelaterexpressedhisviewofAmericangregariousnessandcrudehabitsinsomethinghewroteentitledAmericanNotes.HethenlaterlaunchedamoreapologeticU.S.tourhopingtosetthingsrightwiththepublicthroughreprintsofAmericanNotesforGeneralCirculationandTheLifeandAdventuresofMartinChuzzlewit.Duringthe1850s,Dickenssufferedsomedevastatinglosses:thedeathsofhisdaughterandfather.Itwasduringthisdecadethatheseparatedfromhiswife.Hisnovelsbegantoexpressadarkenedworldview.Hecameoutofhisdarknovelperiod,publishingATaleofTwoCitiesin1859,ahistoricalnovelthattakesplaceduringtheFrenchRevolution.In1865,Dickenswasinanunfortunatetrainaccidentandneverfullyrecovered.Hecontinuedtotouruntil1870.DickensdiedofastrokeonJune9,1870,attheageof58,inKentEngland.HewasburiedinPoet’sCorneratWestminsterAbbey.Helefthisfinalnovel,MysteryofEdwinDrood,unfinished."CharlesDickens."Bio.A&ETelevisionNetworks,2014.Web.19Nov.2014.
Dickensroutinelywalkedthestreetsofthecityandusedwhathesawtoimmersethereaderintothetimeandplaceofwhathewaswriting.VictorianLondonwasthemostspectacularcityintheworld.TheywereinthemidstoftheIndustrialRevolutionandthepriceofthisgrowthandrisetoworldtradewastheextremesofwealthandpoverty.Richandpooralikewerewalkingshoulder-to-shoulder,quicklypollutingthestreetsandThamesRiverwithsootandrawsewage.
SanitationandDiseaseLondonresidentswerestilldrinkingwaterfromthesamepartoftheThamesRiverintowhichopensewersweredumpinguntilthesecondhalfofthe19thcentury.CholeraoutbreaksandTheGreatStinkof1858,whichcausedParliamenttorecess,finallybroughtaboutacryforaction.
IntheStreetsTrafficin1850showedathousandvehiclesanhourpassingthroughtheareasofCheapsideandLondonBridgeduringtheday.Thistrafficaddeduptoanincredibleamountofmanurewhichhadtoberemovedfromthestreets.Duringwetweatherstrawcouldbefoundscatteredinwalkways,storefronts,andincarriagestotrytosoakupthemudandwet. Cattleweredriventhroughthestreetsuntilthemid-19thcentury.
Inhisnovel,OliverTwist,DickensdescribesthesceneasOliverandBillSikestravelthroughtheSmithfieldlive-cattlemarketontheirwaytorobtheMayliehome:"Itwasmarket-morning.Thegroundwascovered,nearlyankle-deep,withfilthandmire;athicksteam,perpetuallyrisingfromthereekingbodiesofthecattle,andminglingwiththefog,whichseemedtorestuponthechimney-tops,hungheavilyabove.Allthepensinthecentreofthelargearea,andasmanytemporarypensascouldbecrowdedintothevacantspace,werefilledwithsheep;tieduptopostsbytheguttersidewerelonglinesofbeastsandoxen,threeorfourdeep.Countrymen,butchers,drovers,hawkers,boys,thieves,

Smithfieldlive-cattlemarketwasfinallymovedoutofthecitytoslaughterhousesinIslingtonin1855.
TheLawTheMetropolitanPolicewascreatedin1829byHomeSecretarySirRobertPeel,whichiswherethenamePeelersandBobbiescomesfrom.ThisfirstpoliceforcewasbornwithheadquartersinwhatwouldbecomeknownasScotlandYard.
ThePoorUntil1834withtheenactmentoftheNewPoorLaw,parishesweresolelyresponsibleforcaringforthepoor.Thenewlawrequiredparishestocometogetherandcreateregionalworkhouseswherethepoorcouldapplyforaid.Buttheworkhousewasbasicallyaprisonforthepoor,wherefamilieswereseparated,civillibertiesdenied,andhumandignitydestroyed.Thepooroftenwenttogreatlengthstoavoidthisrelief,understandablyso.
AftertheturnofthecenturyandQueenVictoria’sdeathin1901,manyoftheproblemsofthe19th
centurywereimproveduponthrougheducation,technology,andsocialreform…andofcourse,bythe

Mr.Brown’sinspirationforthisplaywashumanityandhowtheyrespondedtothetragiceventsof9/11:hewassotouchedbythekindnessandgenerosityshownfromaroundtheworld.However,ashewatchedthatkindnessandgenerosityeventuallydisappearandtheworldslipbacktotheoldways,heimaginedthatbyApril,justafewshortmonthsafterChristmas,Scrooge,whovowedtokeeptheChristmasSpiritinhisheartallyearlong,wouldfallbackintohisoldwaystoo.BrownblamestheotherswhochastisedScroogefornothavingtheChristmasSpiriteither,sincetheyverywellcouldhavestoppedbytovisitmore,orcouldcomecollectmoneytohelpthepoorinthesummerandnotjustatChristmas.Hefeelsthatitisself-righteousandhypocriticaltonothelpthepooranddestituteallyearlong.

Studentswhosuccessfullycompleteafour-yeartrackwillbeeligibletoreceiveanARTSHONORDIPLOMAdistinguishingthemandtheirtimeinhighschoolasdedicatedtoaspecificartsdiscipline.HavingsuccessfullycompletedfouryearsofintensivestudyinadisciplineandreceivinganARTSHONORDIPLOMAwillgivethestudentastrongeradvantageastheyapply,audition,andcompeteforplacementinuniversitiesandconservatorieswithotherseniorsgraduatingfrompublicandprivateperformingartshighschools.
