Teacher training

Our teacher development courses are tailored for professionals who teach in English. These Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) courses are often funded through Erasmus+ and can be taken in a ‘closed’ or international group, depending on requirements.

Our approach is very practical, with the emphasis on doing rather than theorising. Not only is this a more fun and interactive way of learning, but it also highlights the

real benefi ts of classroom activities and the challenges they may provide.

We always provide plenty of ideas and suggestions that can be adapted for use in any country and context.

In addition to running English courses for teachers in England, we offer programmes for teachers in other countries and would be willing to visit your school for a short course.

Course design procedureWe do not run ‘generic’ courses because the needs and requirements often differ from country to country. When we receive a request to give a teacher training course, we understand that teachers often have specifi c needs.

We try to address this and, prior to arriving in the UK, we require teachers to complete a questionnaire and speak directly with

the course designer here at LanguageUK. Once here, teachers are formed into a closed group so they can focus directly on their teaching skills during the week.

We will then produce a brief outline of the course syllabus. The syllabus is not prescriptive and can be changed according to the needs that arise during the course.

Teacher training

Our teachersNigel Gibson has worked in schools and colleges for more than 30 years, in Turkey, Italy and the UK. Since 2004, he has been inolved in a range of training programmes, including in-service workshops and the evaluation and development of teaching standards. Between 2007 and 2015, Nigel was a mentor and consultant at a school with primary- and secondary-aged pupils. He also organised seminars and think-tank sessions, and developed a platform for teacher welfare and development.

Noel Ensoll has worked in the TEFL industry for more than 20 years and has been an accredited IELTS examiner. He has worked with international students of all ages, including juniors at an international school in Canterbury, where the language of tuition was English (teaching IB, A level English and pre-foundation courses), and recently gave a CLIL course in the UK. He has also taught in Japan and led a teacher development course in a Russian state school.

Some topics covered in previous coursesPlease note that all of the following topics are presented as self-contained lessons which teachers can implement in their classes. Methodology is, therefore, approached as ‘learning by doing’.

All the materials used in our courses have been produced by our teacher trainers according to each group’s needs. These teachers expressed an interest in both language practice and methodology.

■ IT in teaching.■ Phonology – linking, clusters, vowels, intonation, stress and rhythm and how to teach this in the classroom.■ Reading skills – improving skimming, scanning and reading speed.■ Using the technology to improve speaking and listening.■ CLIL and literature.

■ Exploiting the internet – websites for materials and classes.■ Using a smartboard in the classroom■ Techniques for short texts – dictogloss, prediction, memorising and summary.■ Discourse analysis – improving writing skills for elementary learners.■ Learner training and recording vocabulary.■ Discourse markers and giving your opinion.■ Ideas for warmers and fi llers.■ Lexical work, including collocation and idiom.■ Vocabulary and texts related to psychology (students’ area of interest).■ I’m good at… prepositional structures and how to teach them.■ Information on and discussion of British culture.■ Fluency practice in the classroom.

Training delivered to your schoolOur trainers come to you for three days or more

Many teachers do not have the time to spend in the UK for training and need a much-needed holiday break before returning to school. But we have a solution.

We can send our trainer directly to the school for three days or more – even on a weekend – and design a course specifi c to the teachers’ and school’s requirements.

Who is the course for? This course is for any group of teachers, from primary or secondary schools, to whose needs it can be specifi cally designed. These might include:■ Schools considering a CLIL programme for their students.

■ English language teachers looking for classroom ideas and activities that will enhance their teaching.■ Schools that have a large group of teachers needing some practical workshops on teaching techniques.

Course structureThe structure depends on each individual school’s requirements. We arrange a phone or Skype meeting in response to an enquiry, and email a needs-analysis

questionnaire to clients for completion. We then develop a course programme and structure once we have evaluated the needs analysis.

We offer a diverse social programme. Practising outside the class is a great way to improve your everyday English and enjoy British culture.

There are many places to see and things to do in and around Broadstairs, across east Kent and in London. We like to fi nd out what our students are interested in and try to organise activities accordingly.

We encourage students to take part in a number of events and

clubs with local people to help make the learning experience enjoyable and productive. Local activities include salsa classes, art classes at the local college, paella parties, cookery courses and quiz evenings.

Typical outings include visits to London museums and galleries, trips to pubs and restaurants, and sightseeing and walking tours in and around historic Canterbury, Dover and Broadstairs itself and its beautiful coastline.

Accommodation 9

You can choose from a wide range of places to stay while you are at LanguageUK. The following options are available to all students and can be arranged on application.

Where to stay during the course

Standard Homestay in BroadstairsStudents have the opportunity to stay with local people in the town.

Being a small school, we can be very selective with our homestay accommodation, to ensure our students are comfortable and welcome.

We believe this really helps our students. Not only can you study English here in England, but you can practise after school and learn more about life here.

A private room and half-board lodging is provided throughout the week. All our homestay options have been

specially chosen by LanguageUK and are regularly visited to ensure standards remain high. They are situated as close to LanguageUK as possible and are either within walking distance from the school or on a direct bus route.

All Homestays provide the following facilities:■ A clean and comfortable private bedroom.■ A place to study either in the bedroom or in a quiet place in the house.■ Weekly laundry facilities at no extra cost.■ Breakfast and dinner every day.■ WiFi internet.

Executive Homestay

This option is recommended for students who are looking for superior rooms. Host families are carefully chosen for the Executive Homestay programme based on experience, accommodation and meals. As in the Standard Homestay programme, a host may be a couple or a single adult with or without children.

Our executive host families live in larger homes, offering each student a private room with ensuite, TV and wifi internet, with breakfast and dinner every day.

We can also cater for students looking for a family with specifi c criteria – for example, vegetarian, with or without children, pets or a private bathroom.
