In August of 1979, Dr. Guion S. “Guy” Bluford, Jr. joined NASA as an astronaut. Since that time, Bluford has worked with the Remote Manipulator System (RMS), experiments conducted on Spacelab-3, space shuttle systems, and to verify software used on flights through the Shuttle Avionics Integration Laboratory. His expertise lies in his knowledge of technology. Bluford has also been a crewmember, serving as mission specialist, on four space journeys. He was the first African-American to journey into space, as well as the first African-American to make return trips into space.

Dr. Guion S. “Guy” Bluford, Jr. is a NASA astronaut. He’s traveled in space four times and has served as mission specialist on these flights. Dr. Bluford was the first African-American to travel and make return visits into space. His first mission, STS-8, was on the Space Shuttle Challenger’s third fight into space. He launched into space on August 30, 1983 from the Kennedy Space Center. What was unique about this launch and subsequent landing is that it was the Challenger’s first night launch and landing.

Dr. Guion S. “Guy” Bluford, Jr. was the first African-American to travel and make return trips into space. While on the Space Shuttle Challenger and during his first space flight, Dr. Bluford and the crew conducted many technological activities. This mission was STS-8. During their 145 hours in space, the Challenger made 98 orbits around the Earth. The Challenger landed on September 5, 1983 at Edwards Air Force Base located in California.

Dr. Bluford served as mission specialist on STS-61A, his second flight into space. This mission was called the German-D-1 Spacelab. He launched from Kennedy Space Center on October 30, 1985. This was the largest crew yet to be transported into space in the Shuttle. Eight crewmembers joined this flight. Three crewmembers were European payload specialists. This was the first mission dedicated and directed by German Aerospace Research Establishment. This mission also marked the first time the United States transferred payload control to another country; German Space Operations Center in Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany.

He was one of eight crewmembers aboard the Orbiter Challenger. This marked the first time a group of eight, the largest crew to date, traveled into space. Dr. Guion S. “Guy” Bluford, Jr. Dr. Bluford’s third journey into space was aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery. He was a crewmember of STS-39 mission. Discovery launched on April 28, 1991 from Kennedy Space Center. Various tasks were conducted by crewmembers during this mission such as deployment and retrieval of equipment and experimental information. After orbiting the Earth 134 times and more than 199 hours in space, Discovery returned to Earth on May 6, 1991 landing at the Kennedy Space Center. Dr. Bluford was the first African-American to travel and make return trips into space.
