At the age of 29 – twenty years

OUR OAKLAND NIPPONGO GAKUEN,

in partnership with the Oakland

Fukuoka Sister City Association,

administered the Oakland-Fukuoka

Spring High School Student Exchange.

Yoshinori Tsubosaka, a 17-year old

student at Kasumigaoka High School in

Fukuoka, was the winner of the annual

English Speech Contest. ANA spon-

sors this event and awards the winner a

complimentary round trip ticket to and

from SFO during the student’s Spring

Break.

The Oakland Fukuoka Sister City

Association grants this opportunity

to our selected student at Oakland

Nippongo Gakuen.

We were well represented by

Gakuen Student Max Adler, an Oak-

land resident and 18 year old Junior at

Alameda Science And Technology

Institute. Max is an Eagle Scout. Max

diligently studies the Japanese lan-

guage at our Gakuen. Yoshinori told us

Max is jouzu (hontou ni!).

Max’s Gakuen Teacher is Yamagishi

Sensei. Max was awarded a discounted

round trip ticket to and from Fukuoka

by ANA during his Spring Break.

Max was hosted by Yoshinori and

his family from March 18th to March

26th. Yoshinori was hosted by Max and

his family from March 20th to March

28th. Both of their Spring Breaks al-

most coincided, but they got to spend

several days with each other in their re-

spective countries.

Max presented the Fukuoka

Mayor’s Office with a proclamation

from the Oakland Mayor’s Office.

Yoshinori presented the Oakland

Mayor’s Office with a proclamation

from the Fukuoka Mayor’s Office.

Yoshinori plays basketball for

Kasumigaoka High School, and he told

Mayor Schaaf how much he loves the

Golden State Warriors. Mayor Schaaf

then let Yoshinori try on her Warriors

Championship Ring (it only fit on his

pinky). Then, all of us got to try it on.

We would like to express our

sincere gratitude to the Oakland

Fukuoka Sister City Association for

allowing our Gakuen students the

honor of participating in this exchange.

The Spring Exchange occurs annu-

ally, and will be awarded to additional,

deserving Gakuen students in the 9th

through 12th grades next year and in

future years. n

THERE SEEMS TO BE SO MUCH

going on personally within our group

that we have been unable to sit down

and work out a program as yet. Hope-

fully, at our next meeting we can final-

ize some plans for the year. We do have

a problem in that we’ve reached that

no driving age, so we appreciate any

assistance with transportation. Even

walking to our Museum is almost a no,

no as many members have difficulty

walking any distance.

The past months have kept us busy

including Patti and her Yoga classes,

which we appreciate very much. She

puts in much thought towards our

well-being as we stretch, bend and

reach. Thank you Patti. We also have

Renie Grohl who works hard to keep

us busy with knitting. She has started

us on a new project of knitting vests for

our-selves.She brought the yarn need-

ed for us all so we were able to begin

immediately. This past month we had

two extra Thursdays so were able to

meet for knitting-only classes. We thank

you Renie for your extra efforts. n

THANK YOU VERY MUCH TO ALL

of the Sangha who brought non-

perishable food for the Alameda

County Food Bank barrels at church.

To celebrate our collection, we had

Ice Cream Sundae Sunday at church

on March 20. It was also Ohigan, so

we had lots of sweets for everyone.

Thank you to the Youth Club who

had their Ice Cream Social the week

before and donated their ice cream

and toppings! So we decided to ex-

tend the ice cream sundae’s for an-

other week!

The High School class once

again delivered an excellent lesson

for the Dharma School students on

reusing and recycling as part of our

EcoSangha program at BCO. Stu-

dents played a game deciding which

articles should go into landfill and

which should go into recycling. Their

craft project was making wind sock

fish out of reusable materials. Very

cool and very fun. Thank you to the

High School Class!!

Our students have been busy

practicing for our Hanamatsuri
