Yourhandshavebuilt-inthermometers .•Setupalargefanandletthestudentsapproachitwith•theirpalmsfacingittoseeifitfeelshotorcold .Theycanalsostickouttheirtongues .Spraystudents’palmswithwaterandhavethemwalk•bythefanagaintoseehowhotorcolditfeels .Repeatwithrubbingalcohol .Inorderforevaporationtotakeplace,youneedwind .•Atairports,theyuseapolewithcupsonittomeasurewindspeed .Abetterwaytomeasureslowwindspeedsistocutabarrelinhalfand•putapolethroughthecenter,andsetitonabigwheelonthegroundsoitcanspinaround .Ifyouwereinsideit,you’dgetreallydizzy .Youcanalsomakeelectricitywithit .We’regoingtomakesomethingthatspinsevenbetterthanthat .

Experiment 2: PinwheelsDemonstratehowtomakeapinwheel(youngerstudentsneedalotof•helpwiththis):Layoutmaterial(clearplasticormirrormylar),placethesquarecard-•boardpatternonit,andtracearoundtheedges .Cutoutthesquare .Folditdiagonallyandcreaseit .Thenfolditontheoppositediagonalandcreaseit .•Drawacircleinthecenteranddrawlinesalongthefourcreasesfromthecornerstothecircle .•Drawadotinthecenterandadotneareachcorner,justtotherightoftheline .•Cutalongthecreasesfromthecornerjusttotheedgeofthecircle .•Useathumbtacktopunchaholeineachofthefivedots .•Pokeastraightpinthroughoneofthecorners,then•bendeachoftheothercornersinsequencedowntothepinandthreadthemontoitthroughtheirholes .Thenputthepinthroughthecenterhole .Pushthepinonlypartwayintoapencileraser,in•ordernottobendthepin .Writenameonpinwheelwithapermanentmarker .•

Onceuponatimetherewasapuddle .There’sourpuddle .Itwasaperfect,nicepuddle .Everybodyenjoyedthatpuddle .Andthepuddlekeptgettingsmaller,andsmaller,andsmaller .Oneday,adogcamealonganddranksomeofthepuddle .An-otherday,asnakeslitheredthroughandgotallwetandtooksomeofthewaterthatway .Andthenabigtruckcamealongandranrightthroughthepuddleandsplashedthepuddleallovertheplace .Beforelong,thatgreatbignicepuddlewasjustalittletinypuddleofabigmess .Howmanywayscouldthatpuddlegoawayiftherewerenodogs,snakes,ortrucks?[Students make suggestions, including evaporation and soak-ing into the ground.]Well,thosearethetwomainways .Thepuddlecanevaporateintotheair,oritcansoakintotheground .Thegroundisalwaysthirsty,likethat .

Now,whenapuddlegoesaway,doesthepuddlegethotterorcolderorstaythesame?[Students guess both hotter and colder.]Well,there’satestwecando .Whatwecoulddois,Ihaveabucketofwaterhere .Icouldpouritoverallyourheadsandthenyoucouldstandoutinthewindandseeifyougethotterorcolder .Colder?Okay,colder .We’llkindoftestthatoutlater .Usuallywhenthingsevaporate,itmakesthepuddlecolder,likethat .Whentheygoupintothecloudsanditcon-densesintheclouds,thecloudsgetwarmer .Isn’tthatweird?Remember,warmthingsgoup?Soallthewaterthatmadethepuddlecoldermakesthecloudwarmer,andawarmercloudwantstogoupandcreateswindandthingsupthere .Sotodaywe’regoingtobegoofingaroundwithwarmerandcolderthings .

Story: “The Minion Snakes”Well,EvilMisterFredwasbrowsingaroundthroughacatalogoneday .Hefoundasausagemaker .It’samachinethatyouputmeatin,andamotorturns--rrrrr,rrrr,rrrr--grindsthemeatup,andsquirtsitoutinalongtube .Hehadthatsittingoverathiscastle .Sohe’sgothiscastlethere,likethat .Andit’sgotadoor,andwe’llgiveitamustache,too .Andweneedahorizon .Thereyougo .Andhe’sgotthesausagemaker .It’saprettybigmachine .Ithasanopeninginthetoptodrawinmeatandstuff,it’sgotabigoldgrinderthingthatgrindsitallup,andit’sgotanozzlethatcomesout,withaholeinit .Andyouthrowthestuffinthereandoutherecomessausage,likethat .AndEvilMisterFredputabigsignonitthatsaid,“DoNotTouch .”Andhewentawaytogobuysomemeat .

Andtheminionscamearoundandtheysawthesignthatsaid,“DoNotTouch .”Now,theminionslookedatthisandtheysaid,“Oh,look,asign--withwords .Wecanreadwords .We’renotasdumbaspeoplethink .Iknowwhatthatsays .”Andoneminionsaid,“Yeah,thatsays,“Hititwithyourbase-ballbat .’”Sotheystartedhittingitwiththeirbaseballbats .Andanotherminionsaid,“No,that’snotwhatitsays .You’retotallywrong!Itsays,‘Jumpintheboxonthetop .’”Andsooneofthemjumpedintheboxonthetop,andthey’reallfight-ingandwrestlingandeverything,andwhiletheyweregoof-ingaroundfightingandwrestling,somebodypushedtheONbutton .Andheturnedawholebunchofminionsintosausage .Theypoppedoutofthere,andnowhe’sgotminionsnakeswiththeirmustaches,carryingbaseballbats .

Andtheyweremindingtheirownbusiness,andEvilMisterFredsaid,“Whatarethosetwodoingdownthere?They’vegottreeswithtoiletsgrowingonthem .That’sthestrangestthingI’veeverseen .Ineedsomeonetogoovertheretosneakupandseewhetherthey’retryingtodosomethinginsecretornot .”Andsohetoldoneofhissnakes,“Gooverthereandslitheraroundinsecret .Don’tletanybodyseeyou .AndfindoutwhatJackandJillaredoing .”Sothesnakewentoverthere,andhelistened,andhewatched,andhedoesn’tevergetanythingquiteright .HeheardwhatJackandJillsaid .Andthenhecamebackandsaid,“Boss!Iheardeverything .It’ster-rible!They’reraisingtheserobotsonthattree .Andtherobotsaregoingtomarchacrossthisfield,they’regoingtoattackthecastleandkillallofus .”AndEvilMisterFredsaid,“JackandJillareraisinganarmytokillus?Withrobots?Oooooh,thatmakesmemad!”AndsoEvilMisterFredsaid,“We’llshowthem!”

Sohetrainedhisminionstoformlinesandhowtomarch .Andhetookalltheminionsthatweren’tsnakesandhesaid,“Okay,youguys,you’regoingtogoacrossthatfieldandyou’regoingtodestroyallthoserobotsthey’vegotgrowingonthattree .”Andsotheminionscamemarchingacrossthefield--dum,dum,dum,dum--withtheirbats .Theycametothetoilettreeandtheystartedhammeringonthetoilettree .Well,someofthetoiletswereripe .Andwhenyoubangonatoilettreeandthere’sripetoilets,thetoiletsfalloff,andtheywerehittingtheminionsontheheadandknockingthemdown .Andtheminionssaid,“Aaaaaaa,attackoftherobots!”Andtheyranaway,becausetheywereafraid .

AndtheycamebackandEvilMisterFredsaid,“Well,didyoudefeatthem?Didyoukillallthosero-bots?”Andtheminionssaid,“Uh,yeah,Boss .Wedid .Wekilledthem .Everyoneofthem .Yeah,that’sright,wekilledthemall .”AndEvilMisterFredsaid,“Uh,Idon’tthinkso .”Hegotouthistelescopeandhelookedacrossthefield,andsureenough,therewasstillabunchoftoiletsonthetree .Hesaid,“Oh,man,youguyscan’tdoanythingright .I’mgoingtosendmysnakesoverthere .They’llthinkofsome-thing .”

Sohehadthousandsofsnakesbythistime,withtheirbaseballbats .Andhe’sgoingtosendthemacrosstobeatupJackandJill,breakalltheirtoilets--canyouimaginelifewithnotoilets?--andcreatehavocandmayhem .AndJackandJillhappenedtoglanceacrossthefield,andnowthere’sanentirearmyofsnakescomingtogetthem .IfyouwereJackandJill,whatwouldyoudo?

[Instructor has a large fan and points it toward the students.]Youcanprobablyfeelsomewind .Doesmyvoicesoundthesameouthereasitdoesfrombackhere?[Moves behind the fan as he speaks.] [Students: No.]Thesamehere?[Students: No.]No?[Student: Your voice vibrates.]Myvoicevibrates?Well,wewanttoseeifthiswindchangesthewayyourhandsfeel .I’mgoingtoputitbackhere .Bytheway,thisisagyroscope .IfImoveitupordown,orleftorright,itdoesn’tdoanything .However,ifIgo[tries to turn sideways and the fan makes a grating noise],ittalks .Itdoesn’tlikethat[places the fan on a stand].

Sowhatwe’regoingtodois . . .Doeseverybodyherehavetwohands?[Students: Yes.]Youknowyourhandshavether-mometersbuiltin?[Students: Yes.]Yep .Yournervesinyourfingers .You’regoingtoapproachthefanwithyourhandsandfeelthemandthenwalkaroundthiswayandseewhatitfeelslike .Youcanstickyourtongueout,too,whenyoucome .Seeifyourtonguefeelshotorcold .Don’tlickthefan .Soevery-bodylineup .You’regoingtowalkuphere,feelthefan,andthengoaroundandgetattheendoftheline .[Students take turns walking up to the fan with their palms forward to feel the

wind.]

Now,beforeyougooverthere,I’mgoingtospraywateronyourhands .Andthenyouholdyourhandsupthesamewayandseeiftheyfeelwarmerorcolder .Whenyoucometome,putyourhandsdownlikethissoIdon’tsprayyourfacetoomuch .[Students take turns getting water sprayed on their palms and then going up to the fan again.]

Thistimewe’regoingtouserubbingalcohol .PutyourhandsdownflatlikethissoIdon’tsprayitinyoureyes .[Students take turns getting rub-bing alcohol sprayed on their palms and then going up to the fan again.]Okay,youcansitdownwhereyouwerebecauseeverybody’sgottheiralcoholandwaterandtheirregularhands .

Experiment 2: “Pinwheel” Now,inorderforevaporationtotakeplacereallywell,youneedsomewind .Windworksterrificallygoodforthat .Andscientistsliketomeasurewindspeed .Usu-ally,theyhave--haveyoueverbeentoanairport?There’sapoletherewithsomecupsonit .There’salittlethingtherewithawheel,andit’sgotsomelegs,andjustlittleroundcups .Whenthewindblows--see,there’skindofathingbehindtheseguys,likethat .Whenthewindblows,itmakesthethingsspinroundandroundincircles .Andtheyhookittoalittlemachinethatmonitorshowfastthewindblows .Well,somebodyinventedamuchbetterwaytomeasureslowwindspeeds .Andifyouwantedtogetenergyfromthewindtoproduceelectricity,thiswouldbeagoodwaytodoit .

So,putyoursquarerightnexttotheirsquare,tracehis,thentraceyours,sowedon’twastealotofmaterial .Ifyou’redoingmylar,there’ssomepatternsonsomeofit,youcanchoosewhateveryoulike .Tryandfitasmanysquaresasyourcanontothemylar,traceitout,andcutit .Sofirstwe’llpassoutthecardboardpiecesandsomemarkerpens .We’llspreadoutsomemylarandsomeclearstuffwhereveryouguysare,andyoucan

traceyoursandcutitoutandthengobacktowhereyoucandotherestofit .Ifyouneedhelpwithanypartofit,allyouneedtodoissay,“Chirp,chirp,chirp!”

[Students start tracing and cutting out their patterns, then fold, mark, and cut them and use the thumb-tack to punch the holes. The younger ones need help folding and creasing and drawing the circle and

the dots. Many of the students also need help punching the holes and getting the straight pin put through the holes properly. They tend to bend the corners in the wrong direction and/or in the wrong order. Then they put the straight pin into the eraser to complete the pinwheel. After the pinwheels are made, students walk around moving their arms to make the pinwheels spin. Then the Instructor turns on the fan so students can come up and see how the wind turns their pinwheel. Then they write their names on them.]
