I Notice, I Wonder, It Reminds Me of… This activity focuses on the scientific practices of making observations and asking questions. Scientists are curious people. They make observations and wonder about things. They also construct explanations from their observations. Each photo in this collection is accompanied by a series of prompts: I notice: What do you notice when you observe the object in this photo? Example: I notice that some lines are thick and some lines are skinny. Avoid opinions. (Examples: It’s awesome. It’s gross.) Avoid saying what the object is. (Example: It’s a leaf.) I wonder: What other questions do you have after observing the object? Example: I wonder how all the lines “stick” together. This reminds me of: What connections can you make? It might be something the object looks like, a memorable experience, or other information you know about it. Example: This reminds me of a map. It reminds me of a trunk of a tree and tree branches. Goals of the activity Increase curiosity for and directly engage with aspects of the natural world. Make observations, ask questions, and relate findings to past experiences. Learn that descriptive observations are distinct from statements of opinion or identification. I Notice, I Wonder, It Reminds Me of…This activity focuses on the scientific practices of making observations and asking questions. Scientists are curious people. They make observations and wonder about things. They also construct explanations from their observations.

Each photo in this collection is accompanied by a series of prompts:

I notice: What do you notice when you observe the object in this photo? Example: I notice that some lines are thick and some lines are skinny.Avoid opinions. (Examples: It’s awesome. It’s gross.) Avoid saying what the object is. (Example: It’s a leaf.)

I wonder: What other questions do you have after observing the object? Example: I wonder how all the lines “stick” together.

This reminds me of: What connections can you make? It might be something the object looks like, a memorable experience, or other information you know about it. Example: This reminds me of a map. It reminds me of a trunk of a tree and tree branches.

Goals of the activity • Increase curiosity for and

directly engage with aspects of the natural world.

• Make observations, ask questions, and relate findings to past experiences.

• Learn that descriptive observations are distinct from statements of opinion or identification.

I Notice, I Wonder, It Reminds Me of…Scientists are curious people. They make observations and wonder about things. In this activity you will see some pictures of things found in a riparian habitat. Riparian is the land next to water.

Now you try!

Your job is to be a super-observer.

1. Look really closely at the object in the photo.

2. Write down things you notice. These are observations. (Example: I notice that some lines are thick, and some lines are skinny.)

Avoid opinions. (Example: It’s awesome. It’s gross.)

Avoid saying what the object is. (Example: It’s a leaf.)

3. I wonder: What other questions do you have after observing the object? Example: I wonder how all the lines “stick” together?

4. This reminds me of: What connections can you make? It might be something the object looks like, a memorable experience, or other information you know about it. Examples: This reminds me of a map. It reminds me of a trunk of a tree.
