You can often detect the meaning of a word by reading it in context, that is, by reading the other words around it in a piece of text. Find the page and the article in TPP and then detect the word that solves the clue to its meaning. The number of letters and the starting letter of the solution are in brackets after each clue.

Can you find the errors in the story below? There are ten spelling mistakes, five capital letters

have been omitted and five full stops have also been left out.

Tow, Tow, Tow your Berg

A company in Abu Dhabi is planing to tow icebergs from Antarctica to the United Arab Emirates. the icebergs would be towed to be used as fresh drinking water, to solve the country’s future fresh water shortage An iceberg holding 75 billion litres of fresh water could meet the needs of a million people for five years, but first it would have to be halled across 10,000km of ocean.

Due to the rapid pace of development in the uae, experts predict the groundwater supply will run dry in the next 15 years. A typical Emirati uses 500 litres of water per day which is about 80% more than the global avarage Desalination plants their provide nearly all of the country’s drinking water, but they are expensive, and require huge amounts of electricity to strip the salt from seawater.

scientists believe it could take up to a year to tow an iceberg from the Antartic and claim it is the purest water in the world Chunks of ice would be chipped off of the iceberg and crushed into mush that would then be stored in tanks and transfered to people as drinking water.

The plan is not without some flaws that will need to be overcome, like the enviromental ramifications for Antarctica, and the issue of who ‘ownes’ the icebergs. Seven countries have territorial claims to Antarctica, and those are Argentina, Australia, Chile, France, New zealand, Norway and the United Kingdom

Although it sounds crazy, this plan isn’t the first ever iceberg towing consept. in 1863, one US entreprenear proposed towing icebergs to India, where they would sell for twelve cents per kilogramme Prince Mohammed Al Faisal proposed an iceberg be towed to Saudi Arabia in the 1970s.

The world’s largest ocean is the Pacific. Ferdinand Magellan, the

great Portuguese explorer, first sailed into it in 1521. He named it

Mar Pacifico, which means peaceful sea, because the waters were

much calmer than the Atlantic. The Atlantic Ocean gets its name

from Atlas, a titan in Greek mythology. He was punished by Zeus,

and had to hold up the sky on his shoulders.
