Assessments

The DMPS Assessment Team is analyzing our current District Benchmark individual items for reliability and validity. Items that are found to be non-reliable or non-valid will be replaced.

External summative assessments, in combination with the Common Core Standards will be considered when replacing the District Benchmark items.

DAILY MATH REVIEW AND

MENTAL MATHUpdate

Page 36: Teaching and Learning Elementary Math January 22, 2013

DMR – Implementation StudyThe Questions

Expectations:• By the end of the year, all Grade 3 – 5

teachers will be requiring their students to complete 3 – 5 questions on Daily Math Review.

• The questions should be from different categories (i.e. place value, multiplication and decimals).

• The questions should be derived from a very specific category and focus on the same skill.

• The questions should be review from previous year concepts or previous unit skills.

Page 37: Teaching and Learning Elementary Math January 22, 2013

DMR – Implementation StudyStudent Work Time

Expectations:

• The teacher gives the students a few minutes to work on the problems individually.

• The majority of the work time is spent with students working in partners.

• Partners discuss the “how” to their answers rather than the “what”.

• Teacher has modeled good examples of partner talk.

• The teacher walks around the room during student work time.

• The teacher may work with a small group by pulling them to a table or by meeting with a pair of students at their desks.

Page 38: Teaching and Learning Elementary Math January 22, 2013

DMR – Implementation StudyProcessing and Error Analysis

Expectations:• Use star and circle/fix.

–Star every step of the problem. This allows the students to receive specific feedback. –Students should NOT just be putting a star on each correct problem.

• Teacher-led 3 out of the 9 days.

• Student-led 6 out of the 9 days.

Page 39: Teaching and Learning Elementary Math January 22, 2013

DMR – Implementation StudyKey Statements + Reflections

Expectations:• Students write each key statement two or

more times during a cycle.

• The teacher references the key statement daily.

• Teacher models ‘deep thinking’ reflections.

• Students write a reflection for each question daily.

Page 40: Teaching and Learning Elementary Math January 22, 2013

DMR – Implementation StudyTime

Expectations:• 15 – 20 minutes daily.

• Teacher runs a two week cycle before the assessment.

Daily Math ReviewCommon Questions

What is the

research for Math

Review?

Why doesn’t the district provide the categories and questions?

Why Daily Math Review? My class cannot pass a

category! Same category

all year?

What if there is more than one way to solve a

problem?

Do I need to stick to exactly 90% of my class passing to

move off a category?

How can I differentiate Daily Math Review?

Page 42: Teaching and Learning Elementary Math January 22, 2013

Mental MathExpectation + Resources

Expectation: Each teacher provides 3 – 5 minutes of multi-step mental math practice daily.

Wednesday, February 6th District PLC Meeting AgendaKindergarten – 2nd Grade

1. Daily Math Review Expectation: All K – 2 teachers will implement Daily Math Review with fidelity by the end of May.

2. Overview of Daily Math Review and how it works in a primary classroom.

3. Video Examples of Daily Math Review in K – 2.

4. Math Website: Introduction and Available Resources

5. Collaboration Time: Work to create a cycle to implement before the March 6 th session.

District PLC Meetings Kindergarten – 2nd Grade

Brief Overview of Kindergarten + First Grade Math Review

•  1 - 3 Problems based on Number Sense Concepts.

• Students do the first problem using manipulatives.

• Students discuss problem with a partner.

• Teacher process the problem chorally with class (direct modeling with the manipulatives).

• Students turn back to partner to reflect on how they did.• Once students are used to reflecting use a sentence starter.

• Students say key statement multiple times.

• Repeat this process with each problem.

• First grade can move to paper pencil when ready still doing one problem at a time
