You will not know everything that these students have experienced or what they have seen.

Just because these students may not understand English they will know a great deal about many other things (i.e. manual labor, how to survive in rural settings, cooking, and caring for younger siblings)

Work this knowledge into the class curriculum in order to integrate each students knowledge and make them feel comfortable and confident.

Each child will learn at his or her own pace! Immigrant children, refugee children, and political asylee

children will have a lot on their minds. Each student has an affective filter that may keep them from

learning. An affective filter is the stress factors that prohibit a student from being able to participate and learn in class.

If the student’s affective filter is high, little or no learning will take place.

The teacher needs to do everything they can to keep the child’s affective filter from getting too high.

Things that can affect the affective filter: worrying about where the next meal will come from, feeling excluded, worryingabout family members left behind, and communication barriers
