•Phonologists study the sounds themselves and how they are produced, and also how the sounds work together as a system in a particular language.

•Phonemes: The distinctive sounds of a language. Changing from one phoneme to another changes meaning.

•Allophones: Variations of sounds that don’t change meaning.
