Welcome
Dear Colleague
You will have already received the Autumn term update for the Inspire to Learn CPD Training Directory. In addition to this Directory I
am very pleased to introduce a supplementary brochure which provides full details, for the first time, of the CPD opportunities being
offered in the academic year 2016/17 by each of the county’s three Teaching School Alliances, namely:
• Darwin Teaching School Alliance
• Salop Teaching School Alliance
• North Shropshire Teaching School Alliance.
The alliances provide a comprehensive range of training courses and programmes - primarily focussed on school improvement - with
development opportunities for staff across the whole school workforce, building on partnerships with a range of local and national CPD
providers. Many of these courses and programme complement and add to the opportunities provided in the Inspire to Learn CPD
Training Directory.
The full programme for each alliance is detailed in the brochure, together with the contact details for each alliance for booking places
onto training or to discuss your school’s specific development requirements. Please note that Inspire to Learn training Credits cannot
currently be used for booking onto alliance training courses.
Please take the time to look through the brochure – our partners look forward to hearing from you.

Inspire to Learn
The Darwin Teaching School Alliance is pleased to present our professional development offer for 2016/17 The Darwin Teaching School is based in Shrewsbury. We have an excellent training venue at Woodfield Infant School, where we offer a range of high quality courses and programmes. We work in partnership with Shropshire local authority and the other Teaching Schools in Shropshire to provide Shropshire schools with a comprehensive course offer which meets their needs. We work with a range of partners to offer course delegates up to date, topical professional development opportunities with reflection on current practice as a central theme to our courses. This year, we have built new partnerships with local and national course providers and leaders, including the Institute of Education in London. We are delighted to be working with the IoE on delivery of NPQML and NPQSL for middle and senior leaders in Shropshire and, through this new partnership, we are pleased to be able to offer these courses at a much reduced rate. Darwin Teaching School Alliance also offers school to school support to other schools. We have several Specialist Leaders of Education (SLEs) who are able to come out to schools to offer support on a range of subjects and aspects of school development. Our aim as a Teaching School is to enable all members of school staff to access high quality CPD which improves the outcomes for children across Shropshire. If you would like to speak to us about any aspect of our work, or to book onto any of our courses, please do not hesitate to contact us using the contact details below. We look forward to hearing from you soon!

Safer Recruitment in Education - Mansel Davies
For all schools, the statutory guidance ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education (July 2015)’ confirmed the requirement for at least one person on any staff appointment panel must have undergone safer recruitment training. This comprehensive workshop covers not only recruitment and selection procedures and practice but places ‘safer recruitment’ in the context of a school’s responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of its pupils. The content of the session includes:
background to the need for safer recruitment and scale of the problem faced;
raising awareness and understanding of abusers’ behaviour and how they operate within organisations;
identifying the key features of a staff recruitment process that can help deter or prevent the appointment of unsuitable people;
making the right selection decision and undertaking checks;
establishing a safer working environment including an ongoing culture of vigilance.
The session aims is to help delegates undertake a review of their school’s policies and procedures in order to ensure that they comply with expected safeguarding practice. Delegates must note that in order to be considered as having undertaken safer recruitment training they must remain in attendance for the full workshop and must complete an assessment questionnaire.

HLTA Level Four - Best Practice Network
Gaining HLTA status is a recognised progression route for school support staff. HLTAs work closely with teachers to raise standards and help each learner reach their potential. Preparation: The programme will consist of two day face-to-face preparation sessions when the HLTA standards will be explained and the HLTA assessment process clarified which will include information on how to put together the required portfolio of evidence. Guidance is provided on completing the required written tasks and information will be given relating to the set-up of the 3 hour school visit. Between days 1 and 2, the participant will engage in online activities. Day 2 will take place approximately 5-6 working weeks later to review progress and enable the participant to receive informative feedback on the tasks written so far. Further guidance and support will be provided in advance of the school assessment visit. Approximately 4-7 weeks after day 2, the participant will email the final written tasks to the assessor. Assessment: Following the preparation, the external 3 hour school assessment visit will take place roughly 6-9 weeks after day 2 of the preparation (which I’m sure will take place within your own school setting). The status is gained through a portfolio of tasks and a 3 hour school visit where an assessor interviews the participant, a teacher on their behalf and a member of the senior management team. The participant will not be observed in class. Assessment takes place with your Regional Provider of Assessment (RPA). All RPAs are partners of the HLTA National Assessment Partnership (HNAP) a body that ensures the continuity and quality of HLTA assessment across the country.

Assess, Moderate, Monitor and Track: No more Science levels! So what now?
The loss of the levels in science and a move towards a mastery approach to the curriculum has left many schools wondering about the best way forward.
This one day course, developed by the team at Primarily Science, is aimed at science subject leaders, assessment co-ordinators and/or senior leaders.
During the day, we will introduce a robust but manageable solution for accurate assessment, monitoring and moderation, as well as tracking pupil progress in science. You will explore how good practice in formative assessment and summative judgment work closely together, in order to maximise learning opportunities for the children you teach.
Delegates will leave with electronic resources developed by the Primarily Science team including a tracking system, progression grids and assessment activities that can easily be adapted to work in their schools.
Outcomes
You will:
Know how to assess children’s achievement accurately and moderate judgements
Understand how to use assessment information to feed into next steps in learning
Establish what is required in order to track pupil progress and make judgments related to achieving National Standards in science

Mastering the Primary Science Curriculum: Establishing deep secure learning for all pupils in each Key Stage or Year Group
Morning KS1 / Afternoon KS2...or come to both!
During the day, we will identify what is required of children for them to be judged as having reached the National Standard by the end of each Key Stage or Year Group in science. We will share practical ideas and activities on how to ensure this approach is adopted when teaching science lessons linked to the appropriate content. We will explore how this approach differs slightly for the “knowledge content” and “working scientifically” area of the curriculum. We will offer advice on how to revisit and reinforce key concepts and ideas with those children finding the work challenging, whilst ensuring those children who have mastered it to continue to increase their ability to think and work scientifically. Delegates will leave with electronic resources developed by the Primarily Science team that can easily be adapted to work in their schools. Outcomes You will:
Understand what is meant by mastery in science and how this relates to
National Standards
Know how to embed this approach in your science topics
Know what to plan for those children struggling to grasp concepts and

Teaching the same curriculum every year to the same year group might see teachers reaching for the easy option of tried and tested activities. Why not try out some of these practical activities in your science lessons to add a sense of curiosity to more routine science lessons. They can be used as starting activities in assessment, ideas to maintain the wow factor or as a science curiosity corner in your classroom and you may even come up with a few ideas of your own.
This full day course will give you the opportunity to try out most of the ideas that will be of practical use back in your classroom, showing you that science can be great fun!
All the information needed will be provided on a CDRom for you to take away after the course.
