10. The requirements for the assessment

Biofuel Promoter – superhero for the 21st century

“Biofuels are an efficient use of land producing both an important low carbon fuel to replace fossil fuels and also a high protein co-product that can help reduce our dependence on imported protein for animal feeds.” Peter Kendall, NFU President

Vireol (http://www.vireol.com/) is set to become a major wheat-to-ethanol producer and wishes to develop an interactive poster including some media rich content for its website using vector graphics, animation and sound effects to explain the process which is described in this infographic. A more detailed explanation may be found at http://www.vireol.com/project/about-the-process/

The character who explains the process should be a ‘superhero’ (but not copy the Ironman hero above for copyright reasons)

The final product should be 1024x768 resolution. Each task below builds towards the final piece in Portfolio 5. The practical tasks should be supported by a high quality, well-designed portfolio of hard copy material – see special instructions below.

Tutors welcome the opportunity to discuss your creative ideas at the planning stage.

Portfolio 1 – DrawingUse drawing techniques in Flash to produce a set of vector images of iconic aspects of the wheat-to-ethanol process. You may use any appropriate vector drawing techniques, but use of Trace Bitmap will gain a zero mark.

Portfolio 2 – LayoutDemonstrate your understanding of the design principles of Contrast, Repetition, Alignment and Proximity by positioning graphic and text elements on your screen design. Screen grab the map and annotate it in Word to explain what you have done and why.

Module Guide 2012/13

Portfolio 3 – Character AnimationCreate a ‘superhero’ vector character who will ‘live’ in your interactive poster as a kind of avatar. Use techniques such as tweens, easing, squash, stretch or skew, paying special attention to timing.

Portfolio 4 – Simple scriptingDemonstrate the use of Actionscript 3 so that a user can click on a hotspot and find some further information which may be in text or graphic format.

Portfolio 5 – Interactive posterComplete the interactive poster in a creative way. You should include vector and bitmap images (copyright cleared), audio (voiceover), text and animation. Take care that the bitmap images are of a suitable size and that the image quality is maintained at a screen resolution of 1024x768. The character you created in Portfolio 3 should be included as a movie clip to demonstrate your understanding of the effective structuring of Flash movies. There should be appropriate audio to create the mood or tell the story.

11. Assessment criteriaThe assessment criteria of the Computing courses published in the Courses Guide will be used. The following grade table is a guide to the level of practical content required for the assignments.

Use a PolyFile with a disc pocket so that your work does not get lost.

Hard copy submission should include: Contents list – well designed (C.R.A.P. principles) with page numbers so that portfolio

items are easy to find. Each individual Portfolio item should have a screen grab/jpg of the item and an

appropriate word-processed rationale or explanation using a font size of 12 and 1½ line spacing. Depending on the Portfolio item, this might be an annotated image showing how you have applied the Design Principles.

Hand drawn character sketches and/or storyboards should be scanned and integrated into the document.

Criteria grid with a tick showing into which grade band you consider your work falls.

NB: NEVER encase each sheet of paper in a plastic sleeve, as it makes commenting impossible.

10. The requirements for the assessment

Biofuel challenge – will biofuels save the planet?

You must work in a pair to create an interactive, web delivered, multimedia product which allows a user to discover things about the arguments for and against biofuels. You will need to research the topic together – make a note of the references in the Harvard format.

You should aim to make the discovery as intriguing as possible - electronic page turning is a bore and should be avoided! You may like to use the scripting for mini-games (Semester 2 week 20 and 21).

This should be implemented in Flash for use on a PC screen with minimum resolution 1024x768 pixels. You should use 3D into 2D techniques within Flash to create a feeling of place.

The user should be able to navigate the product easily although you can include intriguing “hidden” elements. If you do this, it would be advisable to include some hard copy instructions so that tutors appreciate all your efforts!

Tutors welcome the opportunity to discuss your creative ideas at an early planning stage and week 22 has been set aside for you to show your storyboard planning and get formative feedback.

NB: Remember to make any BITMAP IMAGES suitable for a screen resolution of 1024x768.

11. Assessment criteriaThe grade tables in Appendix 1 are a guide to the level of practical content and evidence of teamwork required for the assignments. Each student should submit a copy of Appendix 1 marked up to show your self assessment/assessment of your partner as a team worker (see 12. Special Instructions).

Note that the overall grade will be determined by the application of the Computing Courses Assessment Criteria.

12. Special instructions

The CD should be well organised and you must submit all fla and swf files used. Write your student numbers on the CD in felt tip pen and use a PolyFile with a disc pocket so that your work does not get lost.

Hard copy documentation should include:

Contents list – well designed (C.R.A.P. principles) with page numbers so that items are easy to find.

Storyboards to demonstrate your planning process should be scanned and incorporated into the documentation,

Product Criteria Grid below indicating into which grade band you think the Product should be assessed.

Evaluation (500 words) supported by suitable academic references.

Each student should also submit an Individual Contribution Criteria Grid (below) assessing the contribution of each person in the pair. This will be used in conjunction with observational data from the practical sessions to weight the marks if necessary. Please ensure that you keep in contact with the tutor during the practical sessions to ensure that the tutor is in full possession of the facts. In extreme cases in the past, it has been necessary to award zero marks if no effort has been made by a member of a group.
