NW MN Intergovern-mental Retreat set forFebruary 12thThe Chamber is spon-soring an intergovern-mental retreat onFebruary 12th aimed atsharing informationbetween various

government and business entities in NWMN.The event will be held at Shooting StarCasino in Mahnomen from 11:30 a.m. to4:30 p.m. Business people are encouragedto attend.

Representatives from Polk County, theCity of East Grand Forks, the EGF SchoolDistrict, EGF EDHA, and The Chamber willall give reports. Minnesota State SenatorLeRoy Stumpf, Representative BernieLieder and the Minnesota CongressionalDelegation have also been invited toparticipate. Leon Heath from the North-west Regional Development Commissionwill facilitate the event. With so manybudget issues facing Minnesota weexpect some very good discussion.

Please let us know if you are planning toattend. Contact he chamber office at 701-772-7271 or [email protected]. Re-freshments are provided; buffet lunch ison your own.

Business Needs Stability to ThriveBusiness tends to thrive in a stableenvironment. As business people, we areused to dealing with changes in themarket place, competition and traditionaleconomic cycles. What is hard to adjustto and even harder to predict, are theregulatory changes that have been madeand are on the horizon in Washington.

In a meeting with Congressman Pomeroyrecently, we talked about how the manypieces of the stimulus package, financialregulatory changes and the new healthcare bill will impact what he called the“fundamental cost factors of doingbusiness.” I was impressed that he wasvery sensitive to this. Each time Congressmakes a change these cost factors areaffected, often times without a clearindication of how dramatic the change willbe. The result is business uncertainty.Uncertainty leads to caution and riskaversion which tends to slow investmentand economic growth.

Chamber Update

Barry Willfahrt

Much of what Congress has done hasbeen needed. However, doing too muchtoo fast; like tackling cap and trade, theemployee free choice act, an immediateadditional stimulus package will almostcertainly seriously affect fundamental costfactors and add to uncertainty. Both arebad things for business.

At this point in time it would seemprudent to take more of a Red River Valleyconservative approach and let some of themany “fixes” that have been made reallytake effect before making even morechanges. Message to Congress is slowdown and give business some time toadjust.

MN Business Day at the Capitol March10th

Join an East Grand Forks Business Daydelegation in St. Paul on March 10th.Chamber President, Barry Wilfahrt will beleading the East Grand Forks group to St.Paul where they will meet with locallegislators LeRoy Stump and BernieLeider.
